Publisher's Summary

A mind-bending, classic Philip K. Dick novel about the perception of reality.

Named as one of Time's 100 best books.

Glen Runciter runs a lucrative business - deploying his teams of anti-psychics to corporate clients who want privacy and security from psychic spies. But when he and his top team are ambushed by a rival, he is gravely injured and placed in "half-life," a dreamlike state of suspended animation. Soon, though, the surviving members of the team begin experiencing some strange phenomena, such as Runciter's face appearing on coins and the world seeming to move backward in time. As consumables deteriorate and technology gets ever more primitive, the group needs to find out what is causing the shifts and what a mysterious product called Ubik has to do with it all.

What the Critics Say

"From the stuff of space opera, Dick spins a deeply unsettling existential horror story, a nightmare you'll never be sure you've woken up from." (Lev Grossman, Time)

"More brilliant than similar experiments conducted by Pynchon or DeLillo." (Roberto Bolaño)

"Great narration of one of the best P.K Dick books"

I hope this narrator continues to work on P.K. Dick books so that I can collect my favorite 5 and then listen to them in a yearly cycle

"One of the best books ever written!"

I loved this book more than any book I have read. It's amazing, scary, very paranoid and soooooo much fun. I never understood why some people love the world of books like lord of the rings so much n want to keep going back. UBIK is like that for me. It's amazing.

    "Fantastic Performance"

I read this book 24 years ago as a teenager. I grew up a Philip K Dick fan and truly loved this book. I hadn't read it since until recently, when audible offered it on sale, I thought it would be fun to listen to.

Wow! The narration of Luke Daniels makes this book so much fun to hear performed. Daniels brings the different characters to life with cleverly rendered voices. The book is as playful as it is mind-blowing.

I wish Philip K Dick were still around to hear his own work performed like this. I bet he would have loved it.

I'm very impressed with both the story and performance. I can't help but notice similar themes in more recent sci-fi movies that may have drawn from this story.

    "Great!"

I knew about Dick's books but never read or listened until now. Shouldn't have waited so long. The performance was really good and the performance made it even better. Very unexpected for a $4.99 daily deal.

    "Wonderful classic"

This sci-fi escaped me back when I first started plowing through the classics. It is a fantastic novel and should be read by anyone who loves sci-fi.

Luke Daniels does a great job with the narration and really helps the novel come alive.

    "Confusing. Convoluted. Too clever."

Ubik makes it onto some lists of recommended sci-fi novels so I was keen to finally read it. I enjoyed the beginning and was looking forward to a good sci-fi yarn. Despite the promising beginning the story just kept getting more and more and then even more convoluted.

Things hadn't cleared up significantly by the end, though I still had high hopes. Unfortunately, I found the ending was as mystifying as it was unsatisfying. I'm not a fan of deep and meaningful endings.

If you love high brow sci-fi you may like this book. Personally, I value a satisfying and engaging story over literary panache. If you are like-minded, you may want to consider giving this book a pass.

Luke Daniels does a fine job narrating, though.

    "Wonderful story; distracting narrator"

The narration of this audiobook was so annoying. Luke Daniels uses over-exaggerated, hammy voices and accents for all the characters, making them sound like ridiculous cartoon characters. He also seems to scream all the dialogue, in a volume disproportionate to his reading of non-dialogue. In my opinion, the best narrators make you forget there's even a narrator at all. Luke Daniels is not one of those. I was conscious of his presence throughout the entire book, and it distracted from my enjoyment of the story.

    "Makes No Sense"

Psychic and pseudo-spiritual new age crap, thinly spray painted with scientific jargon. Also very dated, with a poor foresight of future technology and timing (in retrospect). Story probably inspired by hallucinogens, I bet. The great performance by Luke Daniels kept me going to the end.

I just could not get into this. I am sure PKD fans will love it. Dick has a kind of cult following. I like his short work and the movies made from his books are usually pretty good. Every time I have tried his longer works I have been bored off my A. Often the movies are Totally different from his books, if I Recall. Parts of this are funny and makes you wonder if Larry Coreia is a PKD fan.

    "Very enjoyable"

I cant call this a furious page turner (or ear flapper as it was audiobook?) but it was a good read. As with most pkd it didnt seem groundbreaking (anymore) but not without any weight or relevance, like all great sci-fi seems to transcend generations long after publish.

Some seem to see greater meanings or questions in this story and I can understand that if your looking for it but for me it was simply a very enjoyable story of easy digestion that passed from start to finish in just the right length to feel complete.

A welcome rest from aliens, spaceships, time travel, vampires, werewolves and magicians.

    "The original Inception"

The story is very recognisable as older science fiction in its style but that doesn't take away from it at all. The story is very clever initially slow to build but then it hooks you.

I hope they don't ever make a film of this it would ruin a great book.

The narrator was good however I found some of the voices grating and irritating.

Absolutely sensational, one of best books I've listened too. Narrator and story top notch.

I would have never gone for a book written in the 60s but how glad I am that audible put it on the daily deal.

    A must read!

"A entertaining well written well read story."

It's a good story. Deeply fantastical and keeps you guessing exactly what is going on till near the end. The first person narrative works well and the language is intelligent. While I was not blown away by the characters and rushing to get another book by the author I can recommend it. Its not an addictive story but I got through it within a few days of housework etc without getting bored.
Impressovely orginal even if not very thought provoking.

A more leveled reading, The switch between the characters and the extreme over acting made this feel like being bedridden with a 40 degree fever. Nightmarish.

    "A bit shouty"

Agree with another reviewer - too much shouting. Not needed, at all. The voice actor, while brilliant, perhaps should think about toning down the shouting and using other voice skills to convey the same excitement or character. Choosing a deliberately grating and shouty general voice for the normal talking of one of the main characters was a mistake. No subtlety and hurt to listen to. Impossible to continually turn volume down just for this character as it meant the other voices were too quiet. It was frustrating as it put me on edge as it wasn't possible to anticipate the shouting moments and adjust volume accordingly. This is not stage or tv, rather audio and an adjustment of acting skills much appreciated by our ears which are super sensitive.

    Otherwise fantastic.
