Publisher's Summary

The magic flames are raging. Blades are melting. Souls are reduced to ashes in the fury of battle. The grand finale of the war for the First Temple is upon us. The last trump cards have been played, the reserves are all exhausted, and even the gods have engaged in the plebeian fight.

The universe is on the point of collapse. Broken are the chains that hold the worlds together. The icy waters of the Baltic cool the scorching sands of the Frontier. The creatures of AlterWorld spill the first blood on the quiet streets of Earth's cities.

What will Max do? Become embittered and butcher his enemies? Seize the deserted castles and abandoned lands? Attempt to save the one who had given her life defending him? Or try to win the jackpot by finding a way home, back to Earth?

    "More AlterWorld"

I waited to listen to “The War,” and “The Battle,” after reading some of the negative reviews, I think the lag time between the fourth release and five and six had something to do with it also, but I finally got around to them both and thought the continuing story was interesting. In fact the majority of the reviews are positive.
Yes the characters of Bagirah and Tigress are flipped, but that is only a small part of the story and I think anyone that has listened this far can easily adjust; and yes there is an undertone of misogyny, not giving excuses for any type of degradation towards women, but this is from the perspective of a Russian writer. After all this series depicts the Russian cluster and the Dark One as the good guys and have right on their side while the Light Ones are evil; how’s that for a flip.
For those who just want to see Max go on quest after quest and just level up this isn’t a video game; the story is progressing, and Max’s character is growing. The series has shown him start from nothing to the head of his Pantheon and each progression he’s had to overcome greater obstacles, even taking on gods, I think that’s cool; but now the story is getting even more interesting. As had been referenced in the previous books the veil between the Virtual world and Reality was ready to tear. In “The War,” the veil finally comes down and for Max and all of those around him it’s a new world.
The ending of “The War,” is surprising and I can’t way to see what happens next. If you like this series I think we should support these Audio books so they will release number six, “The Ultimatum,” and listen to how this series ends. It’s already out in print but I really like the narrator, Michael Goldstrom, and want to hear the rest of the story from him.

    "Stop at book 4"
    Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this series through book 4. It really seems that the author didn't really have a vision for books 5 and 6, so these two books consist solely of Max completing more and more ridiculously, grand accomplishments. Save yourself the time and frustration and stop at book 4.

    "Great series but...."

This series is truly a new take on fantasy meets sci-if. I enjoyed the series and waited constantly for new credits to get next books. However the series is slowly changing from what I originally enjoyed about it. No spoilers but how the book ends will put you at a crossroad of purchasing next book. The book earns the 5 star rating anything else would be my personal tastes over quality of work.

"Back to a good story, not without some issues"

I did really like this book mostly, but didn't love it. Max finally takes on the Light siders! There is a significant betrayal, a couple fights against gods, some gods make sacrifices. Loth tries to take advantage of all the chaos.

The last chapters start to become confusing due to the connection to the "real world" being severed, which throws AlterWorld into chaos. The environment is warped in some places, and NPC's begin to revolt against the "Immortal Ones." It is confusing but still entertaining.

My biggest issue is not the the Hunted States is a villain but how the United States is written in this book to be a villain is disgusting. In very short, it is said that the United States made Russian refugee camps and putting the Russians into financial slavery. And here comes the worst parts: the United States impregnating the woman to take the babies in order to kill the babies and use the remains in skin rejuvenation creams. Also, the United States supposably experimented and brain washed some of the mentioned Russians by showing them gay porn, with the objective of turning them into thoughtless hermaphrodite soldiers. I happen to live I the United States, but this stuff would be disgusting to anyone.

I do not mention the above to discourage readers. Despite this part of the book, which is pretty brief, the book is enjoyable. Until I reached and once I got past the disturbed part I mentioned, I very much enjoyed the book.

Michael Goldstrom did another excellent job as well.

    "Disappointed."

Well, bummer. Definitely some problems with either the author or translation keeping track of names.
Also, very sad to see Russia's current hatred of equal rights(women, gays, and others) get thrown around like there is something wrong with women working and marriage equality. Not sure I'll get book 7, and that's coming from someone who absolutely loved books 1-4. 5 was good, but this book was a mess.

    "wrong pet names."

The narrator refers to Tigress as being his pet. yet Tigress was the monster guarding the temple and Begura(?) was his pet dubbed the black death.

    "Really (slight spoiler) alert"

I have really liked this genre of book but I fell as if he is getting away from what makes these books so magical and fun. In this book he seems to really like taking things from the main character. Now, for what really made me mad the main character actually killed a GOD. What do you think he received for this never done before feat. Did he get awesome loot. Did he gain exp and come up like 100 level. Or did he get some useless title like godslayer that come with absolutely no perks. If you picked the godslayer title then your right. He didn't even come up 1 level. The only loot half decent loot he received he was made to destroy himself while almost killing himself. The book has a lot of disjointed part. By that I mean he cuts to random people and event without any explanation as to what's going on.

"D. Rus Has Lost the Magic"
What disappointed you about The War?

Chaotic, uncentered mess. Characters have lost their charm and I cannot say I care at all about what happens next.

What was most disappointing about D. Rus’s story?

The series started so well, full of well planned out worlds, characters, story lines. It has gradually devolved, especially so in the last two novels, and I sincerely am upset by that. Whether it is due to unmanageable deadlines, or author ego I do not know. I just know I miss the magic of this series and the imaginative story telling.

Have you listened to any of Michael Goldstrom’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Michael Goldstrom hasn't slipped he's still on point, too bad the character does not let him reach his full acting range.

What character would you cut from The War?

The main one. I'm sick of him.

    Any additional comments?

I'm done. It was a fun series, it's just not anymore.

Great series, but this book seems to have some major translator/editing problems, especially around Bagirah and Tigress.

    "D.Rus and Michael G. a great combination!"

The hardest part of reading/listening to this series is the time it takes to switch from the end of one book and opening the next. It's that good.
