Publisher's Summary

For five years Charlotte (Charlie) Holloway has lived as a boy in the slums. But when one theft too many gets her arrested, her only means of escape lies with a dead man. Charlie hasn't raised a spirit since she first discovered she could do so five years ago. That time her father banished her. This time she brings even more trouble upon herself.

People are now hunting Charlie all over London, but only one man succeeds in capturing her.

Lincoln Fitzroy is the mysterious head of a secret organization on the trail of a madman who needs a necromancer to control his newly "made" creatures. There was only one known necromancer in the world - Charlotte - but now there appears to be two. Lincoln captures the willful Charlie in the hopes the boy will lead him to Charlotte. But what happens when he discovers the boy is in fact the young woman he's been searching for all along? And will she agree to work for the man who held her against her will and for an organization she doesn't trust?

Because Lincoln and his ministry might be just as dangerous as the madman they're hunting.

"To much romance and not enough necromancy"

I am in chapter 10 out of 17 and I am finished. What has be advertised as a necromancy novel, is a typical romance novel with one party not knowing this is a courtship and the other being petulant and argumentative. Charlie and 18-year-old woman masquerading as a 13 year old boy while living as a street urchin for 5 years. She is arrested and while in jail she was the process of being raped when she intentionally uses necromancy to save her.

How convenient is that diabolical doctor is looking for a necromancer to raise an invincible army. Come on people. She is the last necromancer, the only person she raises before is her mother. No one but her father, who was a church official, knew about it. So within days of her release the evil doctor and our hero, Fitzroy are looking for her.

Of course, there is no civil conversation to explain what is going on. Fitzroy kidnaps Charlie who is disguised as a boy, to keep her from falling in the hands of this evil doctor who serendipitously has the army of the dead who needs to come alive to attack queen and country.

Charlie is contentious and difficult the whole time she is with Fitzroy. Innumerable times she tries to escapes from Fitzroy’s muscle. The longer she is with Fitzroy the more argumentative an antagonistic she becomes. While Fitzroy is brooding and distant, I mean the man is trying to find the evil doctor, the last necromancer and save queen and country, Charlie, a virgin, is becoming sexually turned on to him.

Upon discovering she is a woman their squabbles fall into the male and female romance scenario. He gives her the freedom she has demanded from chapter one. She is again on the street, this time as a woman and again a man is trying to rape her and she inadvertently kills him with her necromancy. I had to stop listening when Fitzroy, who of course was lurking nearby, is there to pull the dead body off the traumatize Charlie and gather her in his arms. She is so out done she buried her head in his chest. Again this is chapter 10 out of 17 and only 3 bodies has she animated. As a boy, an attempted rape does not cause her a second thought. As a woman she lying there willing to submit. That was it for me.
