Publisher's Summary

The first installment of an adventure featuring stolen books, secret agents, and forbidden societies - think Doctor Who with librarian spies!

Irene must be at the top of her game, or she'll be off the case - permanently.

Irene is a professional spy for the mysterious Library, which harvests fiction from different realities. And along with her enigmatic assistant, Kai, she's posted to an alternative London. Their mission: to retrieve a dangerous book. But when they arrive, it's already been stolen. London's underground factions seem prepared to fight to the very death to find her book.

Adding to the jeopardy, this world is chaos infested, the laws of nature bent to allow supernatural creatures and unpredictable magic. Irene's new assistant is also hiding secrets of his own. Soon she's up to her eyebrows in a heady mix of danger, clues, and secret societies. Yet failure is not an option - the nature of reality itself is at stake.

    "Distracting Narrator!"
What would have made The Invisible Library better?

I couldn't even get into this book because the narrator was so terrible. Her sentences have a sing-song quality that is distracting, and her acting is just awful. It's too bad because it seems like a good book, based on the reviews.

    "Her voice killed the story!"
What made the experience of listening to The Invisible Library the most enjoyable?

It was not enjoyable. Susan Duerden's voice made listening to the story very distracting. I don't think I can listen to the rest of the story.

Would you be willing to try another one of Susan Duerden’s performances?

NEVER! Her story telling is awful! Couldn't finish this book.

Narrator did not fit the story well. However the story was thought provoking. I loved that the book left me imagining where and how it would continue. Imaginative and thought provoking first and foremost.

"could not get past the voice"
What disappointed you about The Invisible Library?

the narrator had a sing song voice every sentence was red the same..... horrible

What was most disappointing about Genevieve Cogman’s story?

did not hear the story ...had to quit listening in the first chapter

What didn’t you like about Susan Duerden’s performance?

I tried several times to listen...thinking I would get use to this monotone...sing song reading...but could not do it.... sorry I missed the book.....
will not buy any other book read by Susan Duerden.... sorry

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Invisible Library?

didn't finish the book... too bad it sounded like something I would like....

    Any additional comments?

isn't there is someone who listens to the narration before it is published?

"Monotone naration. Like an elevator voice."
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I Have tried several times to listen to this book but the naration puts me off. She sounds like an operator, there is no inflection or emotion in the voice.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I haven't been able to make it to the end. I may have to buy it in kindle and read it.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Susan Duerden?

Julian Elfer, she has the english accent that seems to be desired but she also has the ability to create characters.

Do you think The Invisible Library needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

It needs to be re recorded with a different narrator

    "Over dramatic narrator"

I really enjoyed this story and look forward to seeing where it goes. The narrator was too breathless and intense for much of the story and kept an intense pace with almost no variation. I found is so distracting in the beginning it was irritating. Later I became used to it but it really diminished the quality of the an otherwise enchanting book.

    "Steampunk Heaven"

This enthralling book mixes steampunk tech (zeppelins, pneumatic tubes, etc.) and spy intrigue with vampires, werewolves, fairies, and even dragons. And somehow it all works! I didn't want to stop listening, and am very much looking forward to future installments. The narrator has a lovely British accent but spoke a little slowly for my taste, so I ran the story at 1.25x speed. Perfect!

"Harry Potter for the book lover"

I think that says it all. This book has the vibe of the Potter novels with "the language" taking the place of spells and this story has a slightly darker tone. Though I really like the limitations placed on "the language". I feel that if I hadn't already been familiar with Rowling's material I would have enjoyed this one more. The narrator does a decent job, though following the characters was at times difficult. Part of this was because of the authors choice in names (they all seem to bleed together and everyone has a "secret identity" so that was another name) and in part because the narrator didn't give each character much of their own flair, so they all end up a bit samey. Overall quite enjoyable though.

"READ THIS! Failed to capture me..."

I just wasn't getting into this one. It started with action, but it failed to capture me. I feel like the beginning bit was thrown together with some generic content and was just filler material to say she started with action. Also, I didn't like the narration. The narrators accent was too thick. Please listen to the sample first. I just didn't connect with the protagonist and didn't care about what happened to her. The mushy relationship with Kai felt very juvenile. I am not opposed to YA novels, but this was too much. If any of this was helpful, please click YES below. Later.

    "Pure Enjoyment!!!"

This novel was a pleasant surprise. The main character was craftly written. The author was able to create a strong and enduring heroine who you constantly rooted for. I can't wait for the next installment. The pacing of this novel was just right. This author has great skill in writing and a wonderful imaginative mind. If you like steampunk in fantasy this is a must read!

"Can not even listen to this book"
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

This could be the greatest book in the world but I will never, know. I can not listen to it as the narrator drives me crazy.

Would you be willing to try another book from Genevieve Cogman? Why or why not?

Maybe if it is not read by Susan Duerden.

Would you be willing to try another one of Susan Duerden’s performances?

I would rather stick pins in my eyes than listen to another book read by this woman. The cadence she employs is impossible to listen to her. I am Australian and I know all about annoying cadence/inflection but man on man this woman needs to listen to almost any other narrator to understand that simply making her voice go up and down at the end of EACH sentence does not add colour or interest it is pointless and could cause someone to throw their ipod or other device at the wall.

    "Terrible narration"

I really wish I had bought this for my Kindle rather than as an audiobook. Susan Duerden's narration is terrible.
In the past I've generally enjoyed or at least tolerated the quirks of narrators who have come in for criticism, but not in this case. It took me three attempts to finally convince myself that I could cope with listening to Ms Duerden, but her inflection is incredibly irritating and it's only because I wanted to hear the story that I have persisted, I will certainly not buying any more audiobooks with her as the narrator.

    "Totally gripping!"

A very clever and absorbing story with mythical, yet sometimes futuristic tones. The author creates wonderful images in the 'alternate worlds' to feed the readers imagination. Not a big fan of the narrator, but so worth getting over that!

    "Great story, poor narrator"

I almost gave up on the story until I realised that 90% of my problem with the book was the weirdly emphasised, almost monotone way it was being narrated....
Great story, interesting concept & - once you get past the narrator - it's impossible to put down.

    "Dreadful narration"
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Susan Duerden?

It's rare that I come across a narrator I can't listen to, but Susan Duerden is one of them. If you enjoy listening to a book which sounds like part dirty magazine, part instruction manual, then this is the performance for you I prefer more natural cadence, without a downward inflection at the end of every sentence Extremely annoying and made it very hard to concentrate on what is an interesting concept, but which needs your full attention, especially when getting into the swing of the novel. I'm make sure not to download anything narrated by this person again.

Sorry can't comment on the book itself, the narrator is too enervating.
She sounds like a cross between someone declaiming poetry and a station train announcer.
Got to return this, but I will buy the book and read it myself.
I won't forget to listen to samples first in future,

    "STEP AWAY NOW!"
What disappointed you about The Invisible Library?

The narration is truly dreadful. It sounds as thought the narrator is putting on the kind of smarmy voice that makes you wince in 30 second commercials, and I found it impossible to listen to more than two hours of it. I intend to read the book, as the story seemed ok, but the narration was so irritating that I had to give up on the audio book.

Would you recommend The Invisible Library to your friends? Why or why not?

Absolutely not, because of the terrible narration.

Would you be willing to try another one of Susan Duerden’s performances?

    Highly unlikely.

    Any additional comments?

I do intend to read the book, as I think it will be quite enjoyable without the dreadful narration.
