My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there.

With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.

Interesting creation

Overall this book was pretty enjoyable, it integrated and explained this mixed world that included wizard. It was fairly well-paced and interesting.
The one thing that I disliked about this book was that with the introduction of every single female character he had to mention their appearance, and whether or not they were attractive and feminine and the tone the performer used was very off putting and uncomfortable.

Great Detective Noir!

Fantastic detective tale. I really enjoyed James Marsters' narration, which was very clear and well presented.

If you have a hunger for an intricate world of magic comparable to Harry Potter, mixed in with 20's & 30's Noir themes, this is the book series for you.

good story, let down by production quality

great story and easy to get in to, only thing was the audio production was a little lacking. Could often hear the narrator licking his lips, some background noise, and often moving away from the mic (so it would get quieter and louder randomly.)

Pulpy wizardy noir

I really enjoyed this urban fantasy of a detective who is also a wizard narrating a strange case. the audio quality is poor but actually it enhances the experience as it feels like someone narrating their case notes through a recorder. This was so good I blew through this really quickly and I am moving onto the next book in the series after writing this review.

A Charmed/Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Detective mix

Witty and banterful, with adult content that doesn't smother it.

After listening to so many books with jumping storylines and multiple characters this is a lot slower and linear as you follow the one character the whole time.

James Marsters is amazing but the recording captures too much and you have to play it soft enough so the swollowing and facial sounds don't drive you insane.

Worth checking out another of both author and narrator

Incredible! Also wonderful for fans of Spike!

Don't listen to the silly review about James making strange breathing and mouth noises, it all adds to the charm.
This story was brilliant, the characters wonderful and I enjoyed this immensely and felt excited to download book 2 straight away.
As a huge fan of James Marsters this was a true treat.

A amazing and unique fantasy story with few flaws

The story was amazing. Though the book contains a weird amount of creepy sexism, I feel it's more of a narrative trope within noir, rather than Jim Butchers intent. It does get better as the book continues.

Exceptional!

Absolutely wonderful, could barely stop listening! A must have! The narrator did a fantastic job of conveying the internal machinations of the characters without being cliched.

What a great ride

Classic P.I. story woven neatly and easily with magical practice, and a few cool demons. Neither overdone nor underdone. A central character you want to spend time with, an interesting, fast-paced crime drama and the warm laconic narration is perfect. What a great journey - I enjoyed every minute.
