Publisher's Summary

The era of the Old Republic is a dark and dangerous time, as Jedi Knights valiantly battle the Sith Lords and their ruthless armies. But the Sith have disturbing plans - and none more so than the fulfillment of Darth Scabrous’s fanatical dream, which is about to become nightmarish reality.

Unlike those other Jedi sidelined to the Agricultural Corps - young Jedi whose abilities have not proved up to snuff - Hestizo Trace possesses one extraordinary Force talent: a gift with plants. Suddenly her quiet existence among greenhouse and garden specimens is violently destroyed by the arrival of an emissary from Darth Scabrous. For the rare black orchid that she has nurtured and bonded with is the final ingredient in an ancient Sith formula that promises to grant Darth Scabrous his greatest desire.

But at the heart of the formula is a never-before-seen virus that’s worse than fatal - it doesn’t just kill, it transforms. Now the rotting, ravenous dead are rising, driven by a bloodthirsty hunger for all things living - and commanded by a Sith Master with an insatiable lust for power and the ultimate prize: immortality... no matter the cost.

What the Critics Say

Praise for Joe Schreiber’s Star Wars: Death Troopers: “This is the Star Wars of every horror fan’s dreams - gory, funny, and brimming with a blood-spattered cast of swashbucklers and space-zombies.” (Seth Grahame-Smith, author of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies)

“Brilliant . . . This book combines two of my favorite things on earth: the Star Wars universe and the undead.” (Tommy Wirkola, director of Dead Snow)

    Story
"zombie apocalypse yes, tale of the dark side, no."

I picked up this book expecting another tale of the irresistible and insatiable power of the Dark Side and the disturbing corruption that inevitably comes with it, and another glimpse into ancient Sith history. I expected to be terrified by the exploits of a Dark Lord with an army of animated corpses doing his bidding. Like the other tales of the Sith I have read (the Bane trilogy, Darth Plagueis, etc) I expected to see an ancient Sith lord cut a swath of destruction that shaped Star Wars history. I got no such thing. If you like zombie bloodbaths you'll probably like this one ( I am sitting alone in my room with lights still on . . .) but if you are more interested in character development and events that formed the Star Wars galaxy as we know it, then look elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, the book was riveting and I really couldn't put it down, and the idea of a Force-adept who speaks to plants is intrigueing, but it just wasn't quite the battle-of-good-vs-evil-decided-by-individual-choices-and-actions that I expected. I don't think I'll listen to it again.

The narrator does an excellent job performing the voices and conveying the emotions of the characters, sound effects and music score are excellent. I'll be looking for other titles narrated by this actor.

"I thought the title started with Star Wars?????"
What disappointed you about Star Wars: Red Harvest?

Hey Joe, just because someone grabs a lightsaber, doesn't make it a Star Wars story. If you wanted to write a zombie novel, write a zombie novel. What a waste of a good credit. Thank goodness I didn't actually waste a couple dozen bucks on this fraud.

Has Star Wars: Red Harvest turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not so much the genre, but I'll never waste another good credit on one of Joe Schreiber's books. Sorry dude, this was painful.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I've always loved John Glover's acting and think its so awful that some jerk conned him into narrating this story. His narrating didn't detract at all from the book, the writing detracted from this book.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Amazement that anyone at Lucas' company would have ever agreed to allow this to be published, I want to know who got paid off...

    Any additional comments?

Star Wars fans, there are so many wonderful writers out there who have penned wonderful stories but believe me when I tell you...this IS NOT one of those.

    "Star Wars: Zombies! The Prequel"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it's exciting zombie fiction and it's Star Wars!

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked the plant and the main girl. I hadn't encountered a talking plant since Bushroot in "Darkwing Duck," although I guess he was a duck-plant hybrid. The plant was cute and refreshing, and so was his voice.

What does John Glover bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The plant voice for one thing is something I think I couldn't have gotten from just reading it myself. Also John Glover's natural reading voice seems to have some kind of horror feeling to it, it just really fits with the subject matter. His voices and the sound effects really bring life to the terrifying daily happenings at the ancient Sith Academy as well.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Sometimes, the dead come back...with light sabers.

    Any additional comments?

This book was a great improvement over "Death Troopers" in terms of quality of writing, but I get the feeling that Joe Schreiber too often allows turns of the story to take place just because he's writing a horror story. I think he needs to learn to allow the story to take him where it wants to go. By the end of this book it is obvious that the girl and her once would-be killer have gotten on to the point where we want them to become lovers--and the characters seem to want it as well. Schreiber just kind of throws it all away to try and give you one last shock, but by this point another horrific moment doesn't really work anymore because the story was already over and it wasn't where the story was pulling naturally. It reminds me of a Bram Stoker book I read in high school called "The Jewel of Seven Stars." Bram threw in a horrific ending just because it was suppose to be a scary story, and then realized his mistake and later released an alternate happy ending.

What disappointed you about Star Wars: Red Harvest?

It was just boring and gross. I've read every Star Wars book in the last 20 years. Always loved them, but this was the worst. This is just horrible.

What could Joe Schreiber have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

His inflection was all wrong. Sounded mono-tone. Sounded like one of those automated answering service like the customer service lines use. There were too many times where there would be

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He didn't have a lot to work w/, so I don't think he detracted too much.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Star Wars: Red Harvest?

I would cut the entire book, it just should never have been written as Star Wars book.

    Any additional comments?

I made it to chapter 19 and just stopped, it was too bad to continue. Come on George, what were you thinking allowing them to publish this junk within your universe? I never thought it was necessary to read reviews on Star Wars novels, they’re just so fun and relaxing. Won’t make that mistake again. Can’t believe I spent this months credit on this horrible book.

    "The worst Star Wars book!"
What disappointed you about Star Wars: Red Harvest?

The Star Wars univers did not need a zombie book. The story was written badly. It seemed the story was just made up in a hurry to fill the zombie niche. I was very disappointed in this book and annoyed I wasted a credit on it.

Has Star Wars: Red Harvest turned you off from other books in this genre?

NO! I have read every Star Wars book and will continue to as long as they write them.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

He did a fine job reading the material given him.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Not really. This book was an ok follow up to death troopers, but lacked the oomph that the first one had.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

It was interesting to learn the origins of the plaugue and having several intelligent plants was very unique.

What does John Glover bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Excellent use of voices, especially the the Neti.

Did Star Wars: Red Harvest inspire you to do anything?

    Not become a Sith acolyte.

"THE WORST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!!!"
What would have made Star Wars: Red Harvest better?

    Title the book

What was most disappointing about Joe Schreiber’s story?

The all concept of mixing Zombies with an Star Wars world is just bad. I had to spend 15 minutes on a background story for a new character that will not be relevant or would die 1 minute after finishing his background story, what is the point?

Also the all contamination system is just bad and is not consistent. In addition to first classic dump zombies, then smart lightsaber handler, and tactic group attackers, to get back to dump brute force zombies again. State the rules of your zombie world and stick to it, but BE CONSISTENT!!

Which character – as performed by John Glover – was your favorite?

The droid is the online from the Star Wars world

What character would you cut from Star Wars: Red Harvest?

    All but the droid

    Any additional comments?

This is by far the worst book I have ever read, it is sad to see how cheap the Star Wars brand has become!!

    "Great listen!!"

This author produces different work to the more usual Star Wars books, in this one almost all events are set in a single area - a Sith Academy with particularly bizarre machinations of its lord leading to ravening zombies going on the loose.

Perhaps a little akin to films like Alien and certainly more horror than traditional Star Wars adventure, there is much splatter, violence and gore. The sound effects add to the atmosphere and the Sith Academy area is well realised, you get a feel of the space and size of the environment, which the sound effects add to.

I was certainly giving this my full attention all the way through and never quite sure what would happen. In the 7 hours of this book a lot more happens than often in double that in other Star Wars books.

Recommended if you aren't squeamish and I think the author is a breath of fresh air in this franchise. He can do more of what he likes in this time period, in the 'latest' Fate of the Jedi books the author hasn't got so much freedom to operate.

    Well worth a listen.

    "Bonkers!"
If you could sum up Star Wars: Red Harvest in three words, what would they be?

    This.Is.Bonkers!

If you’ve listened to books by Joe Schreiber before, how does this one compare?

his is the prequel to Death Troopers and although this is potentially more bloody and gory, Death Troopers story and characters has ore emotional resonance. Still grimly entertaining though.

Have you listened to any of John Glover’s other performances? How does this one compare?

John Glover is a solid story teller and his performances infuses all the characters with life. He also has a great sense of drama...changing pitch and tone and pausing at all the right moments.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

You can if you can stand all the gore...

    Any additional comments?

This is an absolute bonkers story! Included are a Jedi who can talk to plants, another Jedi who quotes Liam Neeson from Taken verbatim and a zombie tree(!)...but it is very entertaining. Don't put more into this then entertainment and you are in for some good storytime.

    "Entertaining but uninspired."

If you like Star Wars and/or zombie stories you'll enjoy this but it won't be your new favourite book. There are too many characters who all seem to be written as badasses until they all inevitably falter through stupid, uncharacteristic mistakes.

Despite that, still entertaining and worth your time.

Really struggled with this one. I have listened to quite a few star wars books now and this story really stands out. I would say it's a bit of a genre crossing story... I was really surprised as to where this story went. Is you like Zombie's as well as a bit of Star Wars then this might be right up your street. Unfortunately it just isn't something I could get into.

    "An excellently crafted story"

A gripping story that has an energetic plot. The characters are imaginatively described and fleshed out with interesting details. I found myself routing for the dark side. When the plot unfolds and the tale reaches it's peak I could not stop listening, I had to find out what happens in the end. I would recommend this audiobook to anyone who was remotely interested in star wars. I would also recommend this book to anyone who was interested in zombie tales.

    "Not what I had expected"

I have listened to quite a few Star Wars themed audio books and was slightly disappointed with this particular book as it appeared to me to be more of a zombie version of Star Wars than an actual Old Republic type or Fate of the Jedi type.

I was not so keen on the listen as it progressed and was happy to arrive at the conclusion? If you like the Zombie style books then this will definitely be up your alley.
