Publisher's Summary

It began as the ultimate voyage of discovery - only to become the stuff of lost Republic legend...and a dark chapter in Jedi history. Now, at last, acclaimed author Timothy Zahn returns to tell the whole extraordinary story of the remarkable - and doomed - Outbound Flight Project.

The Clone Wars have yet to erupt when Jedi Master Jorus C'baoth petitions the Senate for support of a singularly ambitious undertaking. Six Jedi Masters, 12 Jedi Knights, and 50,000 men, women, and children, will embark - aboard a gargantuan vessel, equipped for years of travel - on a mission to contact intelligent life and colonize undiscovered worlds beyond the known galaxy. The government bureaucracy threatens to scuttle the expedition before it can even start - until Master C’baoth foils a murderous conspiracy plot, winning him the political capital he needs to set in motion the dream of Outbound Flight.

Or so it would seem. For unknown to the famed Jedi Master, successful launch of the mission is secretly being orchestrated by an unlikely ally: the evil Sith Lord Darth Sidious, who has his own reasons for wanting Outbound Flight to move forward...and, ultimately, to fail.

Yet Darth Sidious is not the mission's most dangerous challenge. Once underway, the starship crosses paths at the edge of Unknown Space with the forces of the alien Chiss Ascendancy and the brilliant mastermind best known as “Thrawn”. Even Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, aboard Outbound Flight with his young Padawan student, Anakin Skywalker, cannot help avert disaster. Thus what begins as a peaceful Jedi mission is violently transformed into an all-out war for survival against staggering odds and the most diabolical of adversaries.

Timothy Zahn's unique mix of espionage, political gamesmanship, and deadly interstellar combat breathes electrifying life into a Star Wars legend.

Only half the book!

Until they release a FULL VERSION like that have with many other Star Wars novels, don’t waste your time with this copy, contains barely HALF the content of the actual novel.

A good back story to the Thrawn trilogy!

Well worth the listen if you have read the Thrawn trilogy and are after some back story of the Outbound Flight mentioned many a time in those books.

Good book but unenergetic and unenthusiastic

the book itself was a well-crafted story and fine addition to the Star Wars Legends category however I believe the narrator of this book was very unenergetic and unenthusiastic he's reading so clear and able to understand felt bland his characters had little to no personality to them I would Point to someone like Mark Thompson another well known Star Wars audiobook narrator he puts in so much effort and unique Flair to each character Although his female voices aren't particularly amazing you can tell he has real enthusiasm for the book is now rating which you don't find with the narrator of this book.

wait for unabridged

wait for unabridged this title isn't worth it. The narrator is okay but has no depth and talks in monotone

Read anytime

While the narration is not as enjoyable as Marc's, it is still pretty good.
The story itself is as expected from Zahn, scratches the 'Thrawn' itch without treading too much on any established or set aside stories.
Can be read at any point if reading Thrawn (either during the original trilogy, before or after the newer stories)

see below

I liked the story as Timothy Zahn writes amazingly, but is severely missing Marc Thompson.
if you have a hatred for your eardrums then this is the narrator for you. if you think your like is going well and need some punishment, or if you think how much worse can life get then strap in for a few hours of pure punishment.
nothing worked for the narrator. every single line was like getting a prostate exam with pineapple. I was half-way and had decided that even my love for star wars was really testing me but needed to push on.
if we can please get Marc Thompson to please re voice this book it will be unbelievable.
