When the familiar and seemingly safe turns lethal, therein danger lies. Amid a forest where the shades of the dead linger all around, every homesteader knows to follow the Simple Rules: "Don't kindle flame, don't shed the blood of another, don't run at night. These things draw shades." Silence Montane has broken all three rules on more than one occasion. And to protect her family from a murderous gang with high bounties on their heads, Silence will break every rule again, at the risk of becoming a shade herself.

"SHADES of Greatness"
Sanderson once again creates a new world for us to explore. You would think two hours was not enough time to create a world, create a character and be entertaining, but Sanderson is the Master of Magical Worlds. There are some similarities to Peter V. Brett's The Warded Man, which is a great novel. This is all Sanderson though, which is also great.
Aes Sedai, Reading was great.
"Wow, What A Great Short Story!"
Compared to other short Sci-Fi / Fantasy stories, this one rank's in my top five. It was well written with a captivating plot.
Silence, she was a strong women due to her past and how her grandmother raised her.
Kate's voice matched the main character perfectly.
Yes, the story picks up quickly from the beginning, and is full of action and twists.
This was a great short story and I really enjoyed listening to it!
"Sanderson wins once again"
Brandon Sanderson can be expected to have unique twists and turns in his narrative. Once again he does not disappoint. Who is the White Fox, what are the shades, what do they represent and how do you avoid them. All are answered, well mostly - there could be sequel. Catch it when is comes and don't forget to pick this one up first, preferably now !
Kate Reading does her usual fantastic job of narrating this story - but with almost 320 spoken books to her credit, she has shown that she could read the phone book and make it exciting.
"Short, But Still Amazing!!"
This novella talks about a world where evil spirits live in the forest and people are scared of them. A dangerous woman named Silence who owns an inn is being threaten by a man to pay more or he will take her inn and spill her secret that she is the "White Fox" bounty hunter. She goes to the forest to complete a bounty, but she runs through trouble.
I have really enjoyed reading this book would would love to know more about these evil spirits . I do wonder if this is the end of this novella or a start of a new series someday.
Narration was fantastic as always, Kate Reading is amazing and her narration is one of the best.
Even though it was a short story, still Brandon Sanderson created a new world with its own evil spirits and you can easily understand whats going on. Brandon Sanderson is truly a gifted author.
"sanderson just keeps getting better."
although this is a short story I am constantly surprised and delighted by Sanderson's writing. I never really wish to finish his books. Despite the length, I found the story complete and the world fleshed out. I felt part of the action and enjoyed the choice of narrator. The small thing I found annoying was the bad guy's swing up in registor and long hmms. This might be what Sanderson was going for and if that is true then he succeeded. though a short listen, it is worth the time and small price to enjoy. If you have never read fantasy or Sanderson's writing then what are you waiting for? get listening.
"Just another story"
I am a Sanderson fan, but this story felt to me like just another story, which you can find thousands off. Its not bad, just not particularly good either.
"Great short story! I hope we hear more!"
Another new world, new magic system, and new mystery. Can't wait to hear more about this forest and why the homeland was destroyed.
"A great performance by Kate for a great story."
Yes, it's dark and broody, you feel as if everything is either in darkness or lit by orange lanterns and candlelight. Pacing is excellent. Brandon did a good job here, and Kate took it to another level.
William Ann Montane, if it weren't for her, things would have went horribly wrong.
Her voice for Silence portrayed age and a hardiness befitting of silence compared to Sebruki and Ann. It's hard to push Silence around, one can tell.
You definitely want to go, run, or speed off when the lights turn red in this stretch of the woods.
Thought Kate did a great job, had to FB message their page and rave.
"Excellent world-building for a novella!"
I think this is one of my favorite Brandon Sanderson novellas to date. (Though I think LEGION is right up there but in a totally different way.) SHADOWS FOR SILENCE IN THE FORESTS OF HELL (whew, that’s a long title for a short book) was instantly engaging for me! It took just a minute or two before I figured out who the focus of the novella was (you know me — I don’t re-read synopses before starting a new book) and then once I was there I was totally there. It was a short story but I was instantly captivated. Although it’s set firmly in the Cosmere, the characters and setting actually really reminded me of Patrick Rothfuss’ THE NAME OF THE WIND — which I also adore — and so I think that familiarity (even though totally unrelated) really helped me get a feel for things quickly which is something that I do have issues with sometimes in novellas.
The characters, action, and plot were all great! As usual with a short story, I was left wanting so much more world-building and backstory but in the sense that I was interested and invested, not that it was lacking. I felt like I had a nice grip on the concept of what was happening and the characters were interesting and showed a nice depth.
I think if you’re interested in picking a novella of Sanderson’s this is one I’d highly recommend on starting with! The audiobook was also great (and cheap) and it was perfect for a little change of pace between full-length novels.
"I didn't think a short story could..."
I didn't know that a short story/novella could be so enthralling. Sanderson is too amazing.
I'm not a fan of the narrator, and this short story lacked the substance of the other Sanderson Cosmere novels.
