Publisher's Summary

In the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse, a lone survivor faces a grave new threat as even the undead begin to disappear, in this sequel to Mountain Man.

Ever since the end of civilization, Gus Berry has spent his days waking up, getting drunk, and preparing for the inevitable zombie attack on his mountain fortress. Occasionally, he must take his life in his hands and venture into the undead world below in search of supplies.

These days, Gus is accustomed to the mortal threats he encounters. He has steeled himself against the corpse-infested streets, human scavengers, and unending loneliness. But now something new and strange is happening: the zombies are disappearing.

It seems a mysterious new threat is assembling—something even more relentless and terrifying than the roaming tides of dead flesh. And it’s preparing to hunt . . .

An excellent enemy

Gus is one of my favourite post-apocalypse heroes. Flawed yet brilliant. This story further explores his psyche and attempt to survive the fall of man. Outstanding reading by the exceptional RC.

The gore continues...

Loved it! This book takes off directly where book one finishes and continues with its disturbing somewhat gross, at times, take on a zombie apocalypse.
We follow Gus further into his growing alcoholism and maddening loneliness as he struggles with day to day life in this terrible world.
We also finally find out the mystery behind the disappearing corpses, a disgusting twist I never would have guessed.
Still full of warped humor, emotion, suspense and gore this is a fantastic sequel.
The narrator also did an amazing job, again, bringing the characters to life throughout the story.
A great listen!

Frustrating character

I would not rate this as one of my favourite apocalypse reads as I ultimately disliked the main character. Beyond just flawed, he was unsympathetic. I couldn’t identify with his choices and am left not really caring what happens to him. In another note, gritty reality is one thing but I found the detail around Gus’s urine and bowel movements mystifying, tangential to the storyline and vaguely disquieting. Won’t be reading the rest of the series.
