Brash, cocky, and unbeatable with a sword (well, almost), Sam of Haywood is the most promising Paladin trainee in the kingdom of Thule. The only problem is that Sam is really Lady Samantha, daughter of the 17th duke of Haywood, and if her father has his way, she'll be marrying a Paladin, not becoming one.
But Sam has never held much interest in playing damsel in distress, and so she rescues herself from a lifetime of boredom and matrimonial drudgery. Disguised as a boy, Sam leaves home behind to fight demons - the most dangerous monsters in Thule - alongside the kingdom's elite warriors. Pity that Tristan Lyons, the Paladin assigned to train her, is none other than the hero of her childhood. He hasn't recognized her, but if he does, he'll take away her sword and send her packing. As demons wreak havoc across the land, rebellion stirs in the West, led by a rival faction of warriors. A war between men is coming, and Sam must pick a side. Will saving the kingdom cost her life - or just her heart?

"Excellent Epic Fantasy with Strong Female Lead"
Yes. The voice actor did a great job with executing.
The Twist of the Paladins.
The hospital scenes with the light humor were my favorite.
I first read this novel on Wattpad where I also write epic fantasy. Both of us have popular fantasy novels on there, and hers published first. This story is absolutely amazing, and really brings out a strong female character which I don't believe epic fantasy as a genre has a lot of. The character is strong, as strong or stronger than a female in The Wheel of Time. You feel a connection with the protagonist immediately and when the chapters end they leave you craving for more. I highly recommend it to all fantasy fans, the read is enjoyable, and once you get into it, you won't want to put it down. I will be following Ms. Slater's career as it progresses as I am sure that she has many more great novels to unfold. Pick this book up and read it, I guarantee you won't regret it.
"A recommendation more than a review."
If you are looking for a book with detailed swordplay, a woman with the spirit of a warrior fighting against societal norms, knights, and a rich universe that suspends disbelief? This is the wrong choice for you. Try ANY of Tamora Pierce's Tortall books (but not the audiobooks).
Paladin starts off very strong, but as the story goes on the combat just falls apart. The writer falls into the trap of TELLING the reader how awesome the fights are instead of SHOWING us.
On a good note, the morals of the story are very clear and our strong female paladin does not waiver. But she is incredibly insignificant in fight scenes.
This author shows A LOT of promise and I look forward to her writing's maturation. But if you are looking for the above mentioned qualities, PLEASE read Tamora Pierce.
Loved it! Great adventure story. Full of action, humor, adventure, and just a little romance.
"hard to finish"
struggled to finish this book. it ended chapters before the book actually did. most of book was very good. I liked the theory of the story. the male voices were all the same, though.
Yes hope there a second book coming
The fights with a demons
Many of them
Good over evil
"A feisty heroine, demons and great battles."
The character development of Sam, the interaction with Braeden and Tristan, the pace of the action and that this book can be taken as a stand alone story. Months after finishing this book and moving on to other YA fantasy books, incidents in this book come back to haunt me.
The ending and the journey there. I read other reviews, I always read reviews before buying a book and although the negative reviews can sway me away from the written word, an audio book is about the narrator. In this case, I disagree about the predictable story line and stilted romance.
As I said, her interpretation of the characters.
"Couldn't finish it"
I found this book painful to listen too. The plot was choppy, the battles and scenes poorly laid out. The character development so so. Every other review for this book spoke praises a strong female lead but I fail to see how this is the case. All the characters and story elements were pulled from the generic fantasy genre and thrown together for a book with the gimmick of having a female protagonist.
"A wonderful story"
i can't wait for the next one. i think the narrator did a good job as well.
"Excellent Book, can't wait for the next one"
I really enjoyed this book with it's action and settle love it engaged me and I listen to it all the way through.
I LOVED this book so much! I always love a strong independent female lead (mainly because I relate well to them)!
"Really got this one wrong"
For me: a really weak story and I regret the use of a credit. Others may enjoy this book, just not me.
This was awful. It never rises above formulaic duff. Very childish and naive.
The narration is terrible. The woman's voice grates.
