"Why do I have to have moral issues with killing someone? I feel like such a hypocrite! It's worse than a vegetarian touting organically grown steaks." (Eric, physics teacher, involuntary vampire, and part-time demon slayer)
Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in. Luckily for Eric, he can rely on his trusty steed and her unwavering support, his flaming sword and its sarcastic wit, and his own snarky sense of humor.

The main character has no qualms with killing bystanders, random people who aren't bad but might have one archaic view on something, and is used as justification for their murder. He makes so many absolutely stupid decisions. Just monumentally dumb. And for what i can only assume is to add more plot devices. Spare a person who is consorting with greater demons to hunt him down and murder him, his friends, as well as kidnapping him and them. Leave him alone because he didn't do it PERSONALLY.Comes across a mage who for the last 100 years or so has been committing mass murder to lengthen her life through innocent peoples death. Changes her into an immortal creature with supreme powers. Sure that makes sense. Just to find the person he spared the day earlier. The writing wasn't too bad, i enjoyed a lot of the book. But there were so many resoundingly stupid moral dilemmas and choices made by the character that the author chose, i can only assume it was to add to the view of the main character being a just and moral person who only kills truly evil people. Unless they tried to kill him multiple times through their agents. Then he waits to be offender by said people personally, and goes on a killing spree catching many innocent bystanders in his 'righteous revenge'.Very 2 dimensional characters.
If I could i would re write a lot of the book to seem more realistic. People aren't steadfast on morals that are only there to be seen as a good person.
I guess the main character, i liked quite a bit of the story, he just makes a good amount of horrendous decisions for no reason, and spends a lot of time contemplating something small, and 1 minutes something that could change the world completely and absolutely for the worst.
Yes and no.
I don't know if i want to listen to the other audio books, i can only assume the main character remains a damn idiot.
genre : fantasy with a little science and a little comedy
with a big lick of swords and sorcery
out of ten : 8.5 to 9 /10
this is not a challenging book but it does have some adult content
it really is a whole lot of fun
and narrated by sean runnette who is frankly damn good at his job
Twilight seemed to poison the vampire genre for awhile. writers have struggled to crawl from the sappy love story vampire skit. Thankfully nightlord puts a original twist on vampires. the story while not action packed keeps you interested and has it's charming moments. The story is rich in lore and its protagonist while over powered is charming. If your over watching the hero get his ass handed to him. before coming to the rescue this book should be the breather you need.
"Ahh no fair no fair"
I loved every second of this book. I had doubts based on the description and the sample, but oh man am I glad I took the risk. The almost 40 hrs wasn't nearly enough. I want more!
Lots of fun without being silly.
I couldn't decide to groan or scream at the cliffhanger at the end. I have hundreds of audible books, this very well might be the best. I WANT MORE!!
"Quirky But Good"
This is a long book - George R.R. Martin long. Unlike George’s books, this one is written in a conversational style, the main charter is likeable and the evil enemies are consistently immoral. The book includes action, tragedy and at times, some humor. The ending is abrupt and I hope the writer is gearing up for a sequel. Even after 37 hours, there is more to be told.
"Very Tufo-esk, Great book with HORRIBLE ending"
awesome book I thoroughly enjoyed it and was honestly wondering if it was written by Tufo until the horrible ending.... still a great listen though, can't go wrong with Sean Runnette (which is how I found this book). I hope there is another installment to finish up the loose ends.
"Great story and narration!"
Excellent story and narrator. I am looking forward to the next book of the trilogy.
There was an oddity in the file at about chapter 95(?). One of the chapters repeated--which was confusing at first, but fast forwarding through it confirmed it was a repeat, and the story picked up in the correct place afterwards.
"My favorite read of the year"
The storyline is good and the narrator is perfect for the story. It never flags. It never wanders. It just keeps going from one interesting plot point to another. I normally go for high tech science fiction. This is a most welcome exception.
"I Need A Part II"
Found this book by searching Sean's other works. Good call; gonna listen again.
Monsters, magic, romance, heroes, and an excellent performance; what more could a bored trucker want?
"Best story in a long while."
Can't wait for the next book and I hope it's soon. I loved the change of worlds.
"Tufo fans will love this. Awesome book"
what a wonderful book. vampires, wizards, knights, dragons and more. this book has everything you would want in a fantasy novel. ive read a few reviews that complained about the ending, but i actually liked it. i cant wait for the next one to come out. if you like Mark Tufo, i guarantee you will like this book. Same humor l, same style of writing. almost as if Mark Tufo was writing under a pen name. Sean Runnette is perfect as always. i think that i am going to listen to it again right now.
This is the 3rd book in the Nightlord series by Garon Whited.
These are well written and entertaining novels! You cannot help but love Halar, the "grey" hero of the story. He claims to be a monster yet cannot resist helping everyone he meets.
This story was not quite as good as the last 2 - mainly because of the increase in sexual references. It was still an excellent read!
I will keep reading and look forward to book 4!
As always Sean Runnette narrates perfectly!
I stumbled across this book while searching Sean Runnette.
Looking forward to hearing more from this author
This is a great story which made me stop and say "what?"
I love Sean Runnette.
Down the whirlpool
I've never heard of this author his writing style and attitude he gives his characters is dead
on for Mark Tufo.
"What an opener!"
I'm a fan of Sean Runnette's readings and this seemed like an interesting plot line so I started it. This is a truly a miners ice story, with refreshing twists on previously imagined ideas and characters you care about. Superbly read, thoroughly enjoyed, and waiting for the next!!!
"Great book, but odd ending"
This is a pretty good book, the characters were believable and the main character was easy to connect with. I would rank this among the top books I've listened to.
Right up until the end the story was great but to suddenly drop a previous chapter from the beginning on to the end confused me completely. It has more loose ends than a frayed blanket and I really hope a sequel is planned otherwise it's a pointless read!
There wasn't a particular scene that stood out, but the action scene very described well and easy to imagine.
There were parts that made me laugh, comments or reactions that were amusing. There were sad parts but not to the point of crying
The way the audio was put together, repetition of scenes and the ending... good grief the ending.. please say there is more!
"Vampires with a heart"
Yes, given the length I'm sure there will be some points I missed first time around! It took me a while to get into the story, but I am so pleased I stayed with it. There were times the story took off in unexpected directions and the pace wasn't even - but that's fine by me. Even with the length, don't expect the story to tie up all the story lines there are a lot left hanging.
The story is all from one view point (Eric), so if you don't like that character don't bother with the book.
His pace of reading is quite laconic - I'm not sure I would have read the voice quite the same way, it added some characterisation I appreciated.
Several - but that would be telling!
This is a really long narrative - I listen while I run (so for half marathon training this is perfect!). I loved the world described and will likely listen to the whole thing again pretty soon, if I can't find a sequal!
"Not at all what I expected"
Involved and funny
His timing is perfect
Moved directly on to book two and cant wait until book 3
Really enjoyed this book. the magickal elements I especially enjoyed. Couldn't stop listening to it
haven't read the print version
fantastic narration, fast paced and brilliant story
sean is my favourit narrator, really makes the book.
spells, bites and fun.
really good story narrated by my favourite narrator. well worth a read, cant wait to start the sequel
a great fantasy book with alot of twists and unsuspected turns, good story and likeable characters.
"Lost its way"
This book started of very well. Became a little lost in the center and finally came back towards the end. That is right up until the last part where it jumped the shark and became extremely disappointing. Shame I was enjoying very much until then.
I downloaded as I like the narrator. Best audio book I've had this far ( relatively new to audio books )
"Hooked very quickly"
Does not let down, an epic, vivid, descriptive listen. Have bought the 2nd book even before finishing, and expect I'll get the 3rd.
