Gaelan Starfire is a farmer, happy to be a husband and a father; a careful, quiet, simple man. He’s also an immortal, peerless in the arts of war. Over the centuries, he’s worn many faces to hide his gift, but he is a man ill-fit for obscurity and all too often he’s become a hero, his very names passing into legend: Acaelus Thorne, Yric the Black, Hrothan Steelbender, Tal Drakkan, Rebus Nimble.

Story
On a desolate beach in far northern Scotland, the winter storms have been washing up all manner of things since time began. But buried in the centre of one smaller iceberg is a shard of ancient Viking pottery telling a partial tale of a hidden mysterious island beyond the ice and mist, that was home to a great treasure and even greater horrors. Thawing in the same block of ice was a rotting flap of skin that refused to be identified but had similar skin patterns to a creature not seen for 100 million years.

Publisher's Summary
The second novel of a major Feist acquisition, returning to his best-loved series. Written with Joel Rosenberg.
The second Riftwar collaboration, Murder in LaMut, written by masters of fantasy Raymond E. Feist and Joel Rosenburg.
The heavy action was supposedly at Crydee these days, which meant that the one place they could be sure the three of them were not going was Crydee. Come spring, the privateer Melanie was due in Ylith, and its captain could be counted on for a swift conveyance away for sure, and likely not to murder them in their sleep. That would be bad for business.
But away where? That wasn't Durine's worry. Kethol would surely be able to find the three of them somebody who needed men who knew which part of the sword you used to cut with and which part you used to butter your bread, and Pirojil would be able to negotiate a price at least half again what the employer was ready to pay. All Durine would have to do was kill people.
That was fine with him. Durine, Kethol, and Pirojil are three mercenaries who have spent twenty years fighting other people's battles against the Tsurani and the Bugs and the goblins, and now it seems they've run out of Tsurani, Bugs and goblins to kill. The prospect of a few months of garrison duty offers a welcome respite; but then they are given an assignment that seems, on the surface, like cushy work - to protect a lady and her husband and deliver them safely to the city of Lamut. It should have all been so simple....
Raymond E. Feist is the author of the best-selling and critically acclaimed Riftwar Saga, the Serpentwar Saga, and the epic Krondor series.
Joel Rosenberg is best known for The Guardian of the Flame sequence. His other fantasy work includes the D'Shai novels and the Keeper of the Hidden Ways series.
Critic Reviews
"Get in at the start of a master's new series." ( Daily Sport)
"Well-written and distinctly above average...intelligent...intriguing." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Epic scope...vivid imagination...a significant contribution to the growth of the field of fantasy." ( Washington Post)

Not as good as the others
Somehow this book just didnt feel right, almost as if someone totally different wrote it. The other Land mystery was missing, the language just didnt fit. I devoured the other books, this one i just can’t get past half way. Not sure about the narrater either.
I read these books years ago and enjoyed the audiobooks thus far. I still have a few to go, hopefully i will enjoy them.
The kanguage is what bothered me the mist, it just didnt suit the setting of the book... too modern maybe, xant put my finger on it.

a so so murder mystery
the first half of this book is a bit boring with new but ultimately forgettable characters, the last half gets into what the whole story is really about and builds the characters as they should have at the beginning of the book. overall an alright book if one of the less interesting of the whole riftwar cycle

A who done it.
I’ve listened to the whole magician series and this is my least favorite. A medieval who done it rather than fantasy fiction.

really loving legends of riftwar
As far as side story books go these LOR books are fantastic. This one is a entertaining little who done it story from the perspective of a mercenary, but it also goes into the life and tribulations of three very different mercenaries with the same struggles. would recommend 👌

Terrible
The worst book out of all of the midkemian series. I also think the narrator has mixed up his midgets and dwarves
