Story
Humanity pushed its way to the stars—and encountered the Gbaba, a ruthless alien race that nearly wiped us out. Earth and her colonies are now smoldering ruins, and the few survivors have fled to distant, Earth-like Safehold, to try to rebuild. But the Gbaba can detect the emissions of an industrial civilization, so the human rulers of Safehold have taken extraordinary measures: with mind control and hidden high technology, they've built a religion in which every Safeholdian believes, a religion designed to keep Safehold society medieval forever.

Publisher's Summary
But that was before his mother, the empress, packed him off to a backwater planet and he found himself shipwrecked on the planet Marduk, with jungles full of damnbeasts, killerpillars, carnivorous plants, and barbarian hordes of bad disposition. Fortunately, Roger had an ace in the hole: Bravo Company of Bronze Battalion of the Empress' Own Regiment. Now all Roger has to do is hike halfway around the planet, capture a spaceport from the Bad Guys, commandeer a starship, and go home.

Great story, great narrator!
A rollicking tale of adventure - military sci-fi meets Dungeons & Dragons. I go back to this series every few years. It's well written, with good pacing and decent characters. Rudnicki is a top notch narrator who provides enough character without taking it too far. If I had any complaints it would be the depiction of Space-Greenpeace as a fundamentalist religious order of unwashed, misanthropic, communist evil-doers. Luckily it's so hilariously overdone that I can't take it too seriously. It might ruffle your feathers a little if you support Sea Shepherd or recycle your paper in the office, but it isn't centre stage in this book.

This is surprisingly entertaining and Avery good listen.
Storyline flows well and the characters are very thought out.
Once again the narrator holds the story together.

The beginning of good old fashioned adventure
Prince Rodger was a poor example of a prince but like a newly forged Blade he needed time in the fire to be tempered into into steel
Weber and Ringo have created a world full of action adventure and intrigue filled with characters that you will grow to know.
Stephan Rudniki gives a brilliant performance and brings all the characters to life

Incredibly entertaining
This is an amazingly entertaining story. The world building is superb and comparable to the complexity of the Vorkosigan saga. The characters are all interesting and enjoyable to spend time with. The pacing is perfect, giving the story and action time to develop, crest then relax again, before beginning the next part of the trek. The narrator has done a brilliant job bringing it all to life. Off to find the next in the series. Highly recommended.
