Over a hundred years have passed since a group of violent killers went on the rampage, murdering innocent victims for fun. But even back then, sorcerer Nate Garrett, aka Hellequin, knew there was more to it than simple savage pleasure - souls were being stolen.
Nate's discovery of the souls' use, and of those supporting the group's plan, made him question everything he believed.
Now the group Nate thought long dead is back. Violent, angry, and hell-bent on revenge, they have Hellequin firmly in their sights. And if he won't come willingly, they'll take those closest to him first.
The battle begins again.

Easy to get enthralled with the characters. Action and wit keep you entertained all the way through and James Langton does a wonderful job.
"The adventures of Nate (Hellequin) continue..."
This fifth book in the Hellequin series moves the main, overarching plot forward quite a bit. There are a number of significant developments that take place along the way, and several major situations change in a no-turning-back sort of way. As is typical with this series, the book was riveting from start to end and left me wanting more, yet was also very satisfying at multiple points along the way.
Disclaimer: I received a free, advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review.
That being said, I also had it on pre-order for Kindle and Audible, which I'm paying for. It's that good.
"I'm waiting for the next one."
Each book is better than the last and the first one was great. I can't wait until the next book comes out.
"Hellequin = Jack Bauer with Magic"
So for those of you reading this for the first time the synopsis of the series is, Nate Garrett is a mix of Jack Bauer and Jason Borne with a bit of magic thrown in for good measure. He kicks ass and gets his own ass kicked regularly. This novel is no exception. It is action packed as are all the novels but with this novel I felt like the story didn't move forward overmuch and Nate didn't grow as much as I would have liked, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. I am probably being overly critical here so take that with a grain of salt. In the end, I love this series and will get the next 10 if the story is as good as this one.
"Favorite Book in the series thus far"
This book was excellent, if you have been following Nate, you'll enjoy this one as it finally answers some questions (and of course raises a few more!). Nate was back on his game in this book and not making as many stupid choices as he did in the previous one. I won't add any spoilers, but if you have enjoyed the series thus far this is worth the credit!
"I Love these books"
Such a great story to listen to that you can't get enough of it. Awesome
"LOVED this series!"
I don't know if there are any more coming, but I will buy them if they do. Hellequin is my new Anti-Hero Hero! I love Dick Frances books and the writing here seriously reminds me of his jockey character! I really enjoyed the narrator, the stories fast paced, some characters are so clearly defined they step off the pages. I do recommend these to any age reader...it's a wild ride but entertaining!
"MORE MORE MORE PLEASE"
I absolutely love this series. I couldn't put it down. I've told everyone I know about it.
LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK. RECOMMENDED TO MY FRIENDS! !! GREAT JOB TO ALL!! THANKS.
This was s great continuation to this story.
Narration was on spot
Have read all the other books in series and this is just as wonderful as the rest you will enjoy from start to finish
"The bad guys kept getting away"
The story is good however the bad guys kept getting away. For a stone cold killer, Nathan kept letting the bad guys live. Of course they would get away then come back to cause trouble later.
If he would just kill some folks, the story would be ten minutes long
"The Hellequin Chronicles"
Absolutely fabulous series. Kept me riveted from book 1 to book 5. Cannot express enough how very much I loved these books!!
I hope we get hear more of Nate's adventures.
Thank you Mr. McHugh thoroughly enjoyed every single one of these books. Excellently narrated by James Langton.
I'm a huge sci fi fan and after recently reading the first in thr hellequin series became addicted. Already just bought the 6th in series so I can go straight to next. Great sci fi writer can't wait for more.
"an improvement over the last one"
a good wrap up to the threads laid out in the first few books. once again a very middle story but enjoyable none the less.
"excellent story and great performance"
I love the Hellequin stories and having them in audio form is great.
Good character development and you feel for the characters. Really enjoyed this story.
"Just the ticket."
These books are some of the best for easy going in both reading terms and listening. I usually end up reading books and the. Getting the audiobook as well as I like to get the full 360 on a story. With some it works and others not so much. But these are some of the best for easy listening. The story has finally started to give us a glimpse into the protagonists life before leaving Marlin and it's really starting to build up to something spectacular. If your looking for something similar to the iron Druid chronicles, or Jim butchers the Dresden files this is just the ticket. Great performance and great story.
"Another outstanding Nate adventure"
This book is keeping the series going on its excellent run. The story truly pulls you in and keeps enraptured until it ends. The authors ability to describe minor characters (never mind major ones) and have you care for them is an art.
Sometimes by this stage of a series it can become a little ragged but not here there's so much unanswered so much more I want to know. The books seamlessly fit with no plot gaps or issues. Can't wait for the next book from one of my favourite authors.
"Great series continues"
This series never disappoints with just the right mix of action, lore and that agonisingly slow reveal of Nate's past. The parallel stories keep getting better each time though this one doesn't quite match up to the WW2 story in Prison of Hope.
Like many fans of urban fantasy I can't help but use Jim Butcher as the yardstick and this does remind me a little bit of the conspiracy and voyage to the heart of the organisation's domain in Turn Coat. Having characters called Hendricks and Mac add to this along with the increasing significance of Nate's best friend's daughter (and I have the feeling that by naming Manannan Mac Lir as Mac, a big secret in the Dresden Files might just have been spoiled).
James Langton is one of my favourite audiobook narrators and definitely brings the character to life in a way that my internal narration doesn't. I read Prison of Hope before listening and I'm glad I bought the audiobook for that one as well. Once or twice I actually found his voice continuing to narrate other things in my head as I read them - it's very odd imagining someone else's voice reading Facebook posts. His pronunciation was a little... quirky in some places though, particularly his switching between Erebus and Erberus and his odd (at least to me) use of a long 'o' in coven. His accents are generally convincing enough and he doesn't overdo the female voices like some narrators I've heard.
As always, Hellequin invokes a sense of righteous anger and the feeling that justice has been done (or at least the good fight was adequately fought) - he's an anti-hero you can get behind. The humour is also always pitched just right though it never quite seems to gel with Hellequin's fearsome reputation.
Spoiler: Contains the most flagrant use of the word 'cockwomble' in modern literature.
fantastic, brillent and great all rolled into one package what more can I say
The book is full of action. Did not want to put it down
Have listened to all Helequin chronicles up to this one and must say they just seem to get better and better
Yes I could not put it down.
