Publisher's Summary

He had known this day would come. No man could escape the entire might of the Sovran forever. He just found it humorous that it was an enemy of the Sovran that had caught him instead. Bound, kneeling before a queen whom he had hounded for a straight year, he should have been anxious. Or at least a little worried. Instead, a strange sense of relief filled him. It was over. His mad escape from Brindisi's justice was over. "That is a very calm expression on your face, General Darius Bresalier," she observed. Her tone was idle, but her eyes were as sharp as a hawk's. "Are you not worried?" "I knew what the punishment would be, Your Most High Majesty," he answered respectfully. "I have had a year to resign myself to my fate. I cannot complain." She gave a low, musical hum of approval. "Well said. I have heard many reports on what you did but never once did I believe I could have the full tale." She leaned forward, causing the silk pillows behind her to slide in every direction. "Kingslayer, tell me. Why did you kill your king?"

What about Mark McClain Wilson’s performance did you like?

It was nice to listen to a narrator who had an American accent. I do enjoy the English narration also... it was just a nice change-up

    Any additional comments?

All the reviews I had read had stated how wonderful the book was. I just couldn't make it through this book. It was all so simple. I think my displeasure has more to do with my taste than the author's writing. If you like a book that is very straight forward and not too deep this would be an enjoyable listen. For those who want more depth then it may be as frustrating for you as for me. I found myself becoming annoyed and finally having to turn it off. :(

    What disappointed you about Kingslayer?

World Building was almost nil. Its not really a Fantasy at all. Nothing FANTASTICAL happens or is shown in the book. Basically, there was nothing cool about this book. Him getting the horse was my favorite part.

If you’ve listened to books by Honor Raconteur before, how does this one compare?

No I have not. I probably wont again.

Have you listened to any of Mark McClain Wilson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not. He does a good job however. The Narration is not the issue.

What character would you cut from Kingslayer?

I would take out all the romantic encounters. So Darius love interest and later his wife.

    Any additional comments?

On a positive note. Character development is done very well in this book. But not enough to support the book as a whole. The plot was basically a oath, a couple battles and a marriage. And the world building is pretty much nil. I hate to give bad reviews but, I bought this book due to its positive ones. I don't understand why people have given this book great reviews. Unless they are just used to boring or audible rookies.

    Story
"Sooo Slow. Sooo predictable. Sooo simple."

This book started out with a great premise and a good beginning, but the narration by Mark McClain Wilson was awful. I hoped I would get used to it, but it just became more and more annoying. He may have separate, convincing voices for each character, but that is the only reason he received the two stars I gave him.

The story itself also bogged down significantly in the middle and was very, very straightforward. I was interested up to and including the first battle in the desert, but then either Honor Raconteur ran out of ideas or fell in love or something, because it all goes downhill from there. The story is very predictable and overly clichéed, two characteristics only emphasised by Mr. Wilson's overly emphasised reading. I had the impression that Raconteur wrote this off the cuff, because there is no character build-up, no story planning, no foreshadowing for later events. And although I've not even finished my listen, I know that absolutely everything will turn out fine and the main character will succeed with nary a hitch, be rewarded by the queen and live a peachy keen life in a world filled with roses and rainbows.

Further, far too much time is spent with the main character wooing a woman just two or three months prior to the battle of his life, something that tested the bounds of credulity as this was a lifetime soldier with only one goal - to save the country (and therefore the continent? kingdom? who cares?) from annihilation by a country with an army x-times larger than his. And then a woman distracts him? Of course all turns out fine (yawn - not even finished listening yet and still sooo obvious) and before, during and after the procedure we are treated to trite, emotional scenes which try to be moving and humourous but which only caused my eyes to roll.

Frankly, I don't know which factor made this experience so negative. Was it a poor story read by a narrator trying too hard? Was it a good story butchered by a narrator? I will certainly give neither the author nor the narrator another chance so I guess I'll just have to live in ignorance.

"Kingslayer, a story that had me riveted."
What did you love best about Kingslayer?

I loved the flow of the story. I was never bored listening to this story, and it often made me talk outloud to the characters. When Darius would as for ideas I found myself chiming in and hoping he picked my idea.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character was Darius, though the Queen and Amala were close seconds. I loved being inside Darius' head during this story. He was so down to earth and reasonable it only made sense to follow him.

What about Mark McClain Wilson’s performance did you like?

I loved every moment of Mark's performance. His theatricality in his reading was both endearing, and riveting. He was extremely charming, and animated. I loved his voices and how they brought each of the characters to life for me. I really felt that his reading made the book more like a movie, I could so clearly see the images he described in my head. He was absolutely fantastic.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I had many extreme reactions to this book. I both laughed out loud and cried. Mark's heartfelt reading of tender moments and emotional exchanges had me fighting back tears on multiple occasions. I also found myself talking to the characters, especially Darius. I was so wrapped up in the book I would answer questions, remark about characters, or snarl when sepoy ethnic didn't go the way I wanted. It was so wonderful to get so lost in the story.

    Any additional comments?

Kingslayer is the first audiobook I have had the pleasure of listening to. I had no idea that listening to a book in my car or in my room on headphones at night could be so wonderful! I fell absolutely in love with Mark Wilson's voice, theatricality, and his ability to bring the words to life. He used different voices for each character, making the book reading seem more like watching a movie. Mark's delivery of the story was, in a word, fantastic. I was riveted to the story for its entirety; it made me laugh out loud, cry, grip the steering wheel with excitement and nerves. Kingslayer was an enchanting story, well read, and excellently written. The main characters were like able, well rounded, and wonderfully brought to life by Mark Wilson. I found the story to flow smoothly, the battles to be exciting, and the romance to be heartwarming. I highly recommend this book, especially in audio form.

    Story
    "Story a little boring"
What did you like best about Kingslayer? What did you like least?

There is no character development. The story starts out with our main character captured, in chains. He is prisoner. Originally he was lead general of the country that had been trying to conquer this country. He is hated, feared, mistrusted by everyone. The queen of that country wants him to save them from his former army. Nothing explains on how he and the queen learn to trust each other. Nothing is gone into depth on how he learns to live in this new land. Sometimes character development would start, then stop incomplete. There are multiple references with minimal information about his previous life, family, friends. But nothing is shown as to how these are influencing his dealing in the situation he finds himself in.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was obviously determined as the story progressed. This made it boring to me.

Have you listened to any of Mark McClain Wilson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not had the pleasure of listening to Mark McClain Wilson in other books. I enjoyed his performance with this one. It helped me get to the ending as I found the story boring.

Do you think Kingslayer needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Kingslayer may have been better written as a series of short stories or novellas. A follow up book would help if it addressed how the main character came to be as he was. Otherwise it would be a waste of time.

    Any additional comments?

The author says at end of book that she completed it in 2 months. It shows. There is feeling of incompleteness with this book. The story is not bad. The main character goes from obstacle to obstacle. He sails over them without apparent effort or work. This made the book boring to me.

"The Most Boring Book I've Ever Listened To"
Would you try another book from Honor Raconteur and/or Mark McClain Wilson?

    No. Neither one.

What was most disappointing about Honor Raconteur’s story?

There was nothing here. The main character succeeds at everything he does, with little or no effort or dramatic tension. None of the characters have any depth. I am truly perplexed to find positive reviews of this book.

Would you be willing to try another one of Mark McClain Wilson’s performances?

Maybe, but probably not. I want to give him the benefit of a doubt having to read such a deadly boring book. But I find myself wondering if the narration was part of the problem. The fake accents were really lame.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment at myself for listening to the whole thing.

    "Excellent Story!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Kingslayer to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version, but I will say that the audio edition of this book has rekindled my love of listening to stories rather than merely reading them. Hearing the story allowed me to actually become a part of it, and that made the story even more entertaining than it already is. The narration is superb and the use of voices is amazing. The audio edition of this book only helps to bring this excellent story to life.

Who was your favorite character and why?

As in all of Honor Raconteur's books, the characters are a remarkable aspect of the story. Though all of the characters in this novel are interesting and well-developed, I really liked Darius because his honor and drive.
