Carentan, France, 1944 - Ethan Martin, a soldier in the 101st Airborne, is fighting for his life. But soon he will learn what peril truly is when he is ripped from his world and transported to a land of magic, swords, and dragons. And though the Nazis are now far, far away, danger is closer than ever.
The eternal emperor, Shinzan has destroyed the mages. Only a few dragons remain in exile. And now that Ethan - son of Praxis Dragonvein - has returned, he must destroy him as well. Faced with unimaginable power, Ethan has only one hope - to reach the dwarf kingdom of Elyfoss before Shinzan can find him.

"Interesting Story but very light on in details."
I enjoyed the book, but the pacing was far too fast. Too many things happen to the character and not enough detail or time is spent setting up the premise. For examlpe this is supposed toe a 17 year old boy fighting in WW2. Bam he's in a Fantasy land and really doesn't question much. He can be stubborn and in denial but it is more as a plot device than how a realistic person would think things through. I did not feel like the character fit his description at all either, at no point does he find any use for his supposed parachute Airborne Division training at all. Not once does it give him an edge over any situation. He might as well have just been an orphaned farm boy for how it felt. The magic system is incredible weak and not well explored, by the main character or by anyone else. The main 'romance' aspects to the book focus on a 13 year old girl crushing really hard on our 17 year old MC and him trying to figure out how to tell her its inappropriate. She also falls madly in love with him out of nowhere, it didn't make a lot of sense.
I'm disappointed - I was really looking forward to this. the premise sounded great but the execution was just lacking. Great performance from the narrator though.
"Alternate World w/ Dwarfs, Trolls, Dragons & Mages"
The first book in the series was good and I liked it. I've even checked out the other two stories in the series that have been released, and from the description, I like where the series is heading so I will be continuing with the other books.
The narration was great, and I really enjoyed it!
"very captivating and enjoyed!"
it was a little slow going to start but once gotten started if he immediately became a very quick and captivating book. I look forward to the next two or three books
"Nice, interesrting new storyline"
Even tho it is so far a bit predictable, it is a very worthwhile read, great fun, with good possibilities & various options now set up well for future books.
"A good enough beginning"
I enjoyed this author's Godling Chronicles series, so thought I'd give this one a try, knowing from experience that the narrator is a virtuoso. This is epic high fantasy with romance, told in 3rd person, set in 1944 France and on a magical planet called Lumnia.
Hero Ethan is a young paratrooper from the 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army (see the HBO series, BAND of BROTHERS). Secondary characters are okay but not greatly compelling.
Ethan does many stupid and immature things at the beginning, and the companions bicker too much at times. Markus is sometimes revoltingly psycho. I almost gave up. But the book improved in the second half. Will read book 2. Dragons!
Excellent narration by Derek Perkins.
"My first book and my first review here...."
liked the narration. ... bought the sequel too. .. story is gripping but not exactly the top of its kind. .. a little predictable in a place or 2... but enjoyed the book as a whole.
"Main character is weak"
I'm not sure Mr Anderson knows what an Airborne Ranger is... Even in their early days, during WWII, their hand to hand combat skills were exceptional - yet our hero cannot seem to win a fight! Combat with a sword is different, but there were many fights lost using knives and fisticuffs. .. Good thing he has a skilled 13 year old girl to protect him. Speaking as a veteran combat arms trainer, this element of the story is a serious disappointment. However, the back story and other characters make this a good read. I finished the book in one sitting.
the story grips you till the end.
It shows imagination and the meaning of fate.
I xan not wait for book two.
"This story covers two worlds both interesting"
The story was very different and I enjoyed it and yes, after awhile I would listen to it again
None, this is a great story with two worlds that keeps you interested in both
Mr. Perkins does a great job and the characters fit Keep up the good work
I liked the start when they were transported to the new world , and many more scenes in the book were both humorous and moving
I plan on reading the rest of the books in this series
"Cliff Hanger - DON'T BUY 1/3 OF A BOOK"
Sure, if it weren't a cliff hanger.
YA basis but that is reasonable for the main character's age/mentality.
It would have been had there been a somewhat plausible conclusion to the book. But it just ended (just like a 1930's - 40's - 50's Saturday morning matinee movie). COME ON!!!
Are you REALLY trying to revive that business model???
This story was interesting enough to be a full book (actually it was about 1/3 of a story) but I suspect some marketing person said, " We'll give 'em a taste for the $2.00 special price and get them to buy the full book." Thanks, I'll pass! Other authors give a full story but make the reader interested enough in the ideas/world that they want to hear more.
"All of the ingredients."
Created and expertly combined by Brian D Anderson this first book in the Dragonvein series seems to grip you from the beginning. Like so many books narrated by Derek Perkins, this has all of the ingredients required to make a good epic.
"I love this story"
loved it and I can't stop listening to the store. l give this story 5 stars
Good story and characters that grew on me as the book went on. Voice acting excellent, already bought next in series.
"Where's the rest of it?"
Ends as abruptly as a Cormac McCarthy without the skill or satisfaction. Reads more like a long, self-indulgent novella than an actual novel. Not sure if this is the author's doing or a publisher's penchant for splitting up coherent stories in order to increase revenue. Either way, you'll be too annoyed to go to the next one.
"It's a poor cousin of Tolkein fantasy"
Standard high fantasy with a few minor tweaks, a few interesting sci fi origins adds some different spice to classic tropes. Narrator is competent, if uninspiring.
"Strong start to a series"
This is a very good start to what will be a great series. I had been toying with wether to get this book or not. But when I saw all 3 books in the bye 3 books for 2 credits, decided to get them and I think I got a great deal. This is a good adventure / quest story with some good action throne in. I really enjoyed this book and something else going for it is that it is narrated by Derek Perkins and he always does a great job with this type of book. If you like David A Wells then you are going to like this series as this reminds me of his books.
this is a brilliant audio book, really good story line got really good action Barrick comedy and can't wait for the next book if you've clicked on this with you you should listen to this book it is 4 full of good action
