Publisher's Summary

Gaming with friends offered what Amanda missed in her dreary college life: friendship and excitement, the thrill of combat for a good cause, and the chance to be a hero. Neither Amanda nor her friend, Eric, ever expected to face the suddenly real world of their fantasy adventures. But when a careless joke draws the ire of a dark wizard, both must rise to the challenge.

Leveling up has never been so hard...or felt so good.

    Story
    "Very fun read."

First, I wanna say that Tess Irondale, who seems to have emerged solely for Kay's books, or has adopted a new moniker, has given a fantastic delivery. Easily one of my favorite narrators now. If she did adopt a moniker for these books, I wish I knew what other name she goes by to track down more titles. I hope to see more of her here.

This is a really fun story. It has much of the whole "transported into fantasy world" trope, but the characters are good and the story fun and interesting.

Others have said the story is too short, and I think that's because we like the characters at the end. They're fun and interesting, they grow and become more powerful, they make friends and lovers, and, generally, make us eager to spend more time with them.

I disagree that it's too short because it's a complete story, and it's satisfying when you're done. Kay could have pushed longer but he'd have had to introduce a handful of subplots and I think the whole thing would have gotten convoluted fast.

As it stands, you'll have a really fun 4 hours, and those in the DnD know will catch a few references.

Every DM on the planet wants to do something like this, but I think Kay nailed it here. :)

    "Too short"

I was disappointed by this story because it could have been much longer and drawn out. I would be interested if there were a longer version, or longer sequels, but as it stands right now it feels way too short.

    Story
    "Light, fast paced fun"

This was my introduction to Elliott Kay's writing. His other two series looked like fun, but I wasn't sure how good they would be. Then I noticed this novella, and I figured that it would make a good starting point.

I've read/listened to very few good 'player is sucked into a game world' stories, and equally few new additions to old school sword and sorcery stories. This one takes a swing at doing both at once, and knocks it out of the park.

This was also the first time listening to something read by Tess Irondale. She's impressed me, and has the perfect voice for Mr. Kay's work.

    "Short, but fun story"

Fun, almost bite-sized story read by an amazing voice actress. Elliott Kay has a very interesting style that balances high prose with grit and irreverence. ﹰThere is a heaping dose of fantasy in this story, but it's set in world that has a bit of weight to it. ﹰTess ﹰIrondale does a marvelous job of breathing life to the story. I should caution that ﹰMr. ﹰKay likes to include richly detailed sex scenes in his stories, and ﹰMs. ﹰIrondale is superb at acting out those parts of the story.

    "Short and fun"

The story is short but packed with fun and doesn't take itself too seriously. There is plenty of sex and violence that fits well into the narrative. I hope there will be more like it.

"Good fun but missing the fluff"

The book could have been fleshed out a bit more, it just seemed rushed. The narrator was perfect for this.

    "DnD off the chain!"

I love this story. It had inspired a few one-off game sessions, no lie. Per usual, Tess Irondale nailed the narration of a spectacularly fun bit of fantasy fic. I look forward to more of this pair's collaborative work.

    "I want more!"

Elliot Kay and Tess Irondale return to delight us with a setting of fantasy and adventure. The characters are amazing and the story is delightful. There are plenty of nods for nerds in this. My only complaint is that there isn't enough. This story could have easily been as long as Good Intentions, especially with a whole new world to explore. Still, it was fun and if my only complaint is "More Please!" then I suppose Kay and Irondale did their jobs.
