Once, Walt Lawson saved the world. Lately, he's lived in peaceful anonymity with his girlfriend Carrie. This morning, she's been kidnapped.
Walt has a single lead: the van that took her. Its trail points him up the coast to San Jose, where survivors have banded together against the gangs who've overrun the north. With the aid of a local guide, Walt homes in on the kidnappers, who are days from shipping Carrie far away.
But Walt's past is about to crash down on his rescue plans. For six years, Thom James has been on the hunt, blaming Walt for the death of his brother Raymond. Now that Walt's come up for air, Thom finally has a lead - and he won't stop until he's put Walt six feet underground.

"A welcome bounce back from book 5"
This book unites many of the primary protagonists from earlier episodes and makes for a fun-filled romp through the broken world left in the wake of the alien invasion. Walt, Keri and Mia-Tom provide plenty of exciting situational encounters I was left wanting knowing that Lucy would not be part of it. Even so, the various plot-arcs were entertaining and provided a sufficient amount nail-biting and intrigue along the way.
As with all to previous books, both the author's writing skills and the narrator's oratory abilities kept the dialog lively. Of particular note was the excellent dead-pan nature of the sarcastic repartee from Walt and even Mia-Tom under extreme conditions, know full well that they were going to pay for their silliness and pay dearly.
As I said, there was much fun to be had while on a long drive home from a family Thanksgiving trip.
"It keeps geting better and better."
this series falls easily in my top 10 favorites. really enjoying them all. characters are evolving in ways I wouldn't have imagined. Walt is a little unbelievable, but every story needs a "super" hero.
Several people have commented that the narrator for this series has ruined it for them. I like him. I think it's a gritty story and he has a gritty voice that suits it perfectly.
I have just grown to be best friends with Walt. Very definitely worth the wait. I keep telling friends to read this series and every one that does has come back with no complaints. Nice twists and turns. Ray Chase does a very good narration. Page, display or audible it is all good.
"Read it for Walt."
Walt is probably one of my favorite characters of all time. I went straight to this book after the omnibus.
Oh and Ray Chase does an outstanding job.
great narration, great story , good charcters. whole series has been great so far
"OK, but not the best in series"
This was my least favorite in the series. The characters had to do some unrealistic actions to introduce the various plot twists. I am reading the entire series, because I am interested in the characters and want to see how everything turns out.
truly, I'll miss this universe when the story is complete. I've listened none stop since the omnibus purchase.
"I love this series, narrator is great too !"
I'm enjoying the series. the last book, book 5, was a bit of an anomaly but the story picked back up with book 6. I'm looking forward to the rest of the books. the narrator keeps me engaged in the story much more than some.
"It just keeps getting better"
This is probably the best story in the series, so far. Full of emotion, action, & drama.
Very much enjoying this series! Ray Chase the narrator is excellent! However in this book 6, the reading pace seemed rushed. I hope book 7 returns to the more relaxed pace of the first 5.
I found this dragged and dragged and although gave a nice description of characters found that this could of also been a separate book.
ok but not the best however it has a lot to live up too.
