Publisher's Summary

In a near-deserted coastal village, odd things are happening. Strangers are asking questions about the town's recluse. A local hunter discovers naked footprints in the snow. The stray dog population has ceased to exist. And with winter's most powerful weapon bearing down, things are about to become much, much worse. A werewolf book. Not a romance. Not at all.

    "Gripping stuff"

I don't normally do this genre of book, but the supernatural themes seem to beckon. The authors' crafting of the scenery and characters in vivid detail and the dialogue turn of phrase, whilst very course at times, being me from edge do your seat to out loud chuckle, all in the space of a minute or so. If you don't mind raw bloody violence and salty language, give it a go.

    "A really good book"

I wouldn't normally go for a werewolf book, but I like this author, so I gave it a go. I'm glad I did. This book takes the classic werewolf story in a new direction. Loved it. :)

    "Mr Blackmore is the man!"

Finally Mr Blackmore returns! One of my favourite zombie authors has delivered a new title 'Breed'. It is not a zombie title but boy was it good! It gets even better, Sean Runnette is the narrator. This guy has the perfect voice for any of Keith C Blackmore's characters, that is if you speed it up to at least 1.25x speed and easily 1.5x speed in most parts.

Seriously I couldn't get enough of this one. Stuff it I am not going to sprout on about this.... just do yourself a favour and buy this one, in fact do yourself a favour and pre order the second one!

Every bit as good as the Mountain Man series. Perhaps better!

    "PARTY DARTS"

ONE YOUNG FK AT A TIME
I am a big fan of Blackmore, just read my reviews for Hospital and Mountain Man Omnibus. I was very excited to get this. I thought Blackmore came up with a unique twist on Werewolves and I really liked Max, the German Shepard. Honestly I could not keep my mind on this. Other than Max, I did not really care for any of the other characters and running around eating people only goes so far with me. Part of the problem could be the narrator. I have never really cared for his patronizing voice. Thousands love him. I knew going in, he was narrating, but if written well enough, I figured I would enjoy. I have enjoyed other books he has narrated. I am afraid this book suffers from Trilogyitis. This book was stretched out in order to save something for the next two books. I will not continue this series.

What did you like best about this story?

This audiobook reminded me of sitting in a dark bar on a stormy night listening to a grizzled old man at the end of the bar telling a scary story as he sips his whiskey. Fantastic. A werewolf story that made my shoulders ache from tension.

What other book might you compare Breeds, Book 1 to and why?

I really enjoyed the mountain man series, which is why I decided to try this book. I did like the mountain man better. But I found this one entertaining as well.

"Meh... OK, I guess, If you are into warewolfs"

Keith C. Blackmore Mountain Man was pretty good so I figured I would see if I'd like warewolf tales. I don't. No reason. I have no issues imagining a realistic a post apocalyptic world when listening to auidiobooks with or without zombies, I can get completely lost in a sci-fi but I can't do warewolfs for some reason. Sean Runnette's performance is top notch.

"HOLY cow what an awesome book!"

I can't wait for part 2!!! I'm listening to it thinking why hasn't anyone else come up with this idea! Between listening to the wonderful Mr. Voice Mr. Sean Runnett & hearing what could have been Riley talking I had to double check tomake sure I wasn't listening to Tufo LOL. So .........Storm in the secluded town with a monster for a neighbor. Seems his elders don't think their own kind should be left in peace to die & send wardons to take care of him. He has a differing opinion. I won't give away too much but lets just say people aren't the only animal that can turn into weres!!!! This was a great book. I'm positive it will get picked up for a movie or series. No doubt. It's a brillant twist on the werewolf story. BRILLIANT. Just enough gore, just enough suspense, great characters, anything Sean narrates I'll read as long as there's no glowing vampires bluck, monsters as they should be mean and unpredictable. You will not regret this purchase at all. LOVED it!!!!

    "Action packed and riveting"

If you love werewolf books, this is one you cannot pass up!  Set in a small, isolated town of Amherst Cove in Newfoundland the Warden, Borland is meddling dangerously with mother nature – he is creating a unique werewolf breed that will destroy everyone and everything.  Disillusioned with the hierarchy and rules of the werewolf world, Borland begins breeding a stronger, more deadly werewolf out of revenge.

Werewolves and Wardens, Kirk and Ross must enter Amherst and destroy Borland, a warden who doesn’t follow the rules.  Little did they know what Borland had done – with the help of a human, Ross and Kirk move to destroy Borland’s breeding successes and hide everything from the outside world.

What happens next is horrifying and goes against nature.  How many will survive the night?  And if Ross and Kirk manage to save the small cove, what happens next?  If they survive will they be able to retire with their scars and wounds or will they face the same type of fate as Borland?  Borland warned them - and now they are wondering what if!?!

Action packed and riveting, Keith Blackmore weaves a story that takes the listener deeper into the werewolf world than any other author.  Masterfully weaving horror, he is reminiscent of other horror writers who have captivated readers with everyday occurrences and objects.  Blackmore, however, is much more intense, his monsters are more deadly and provides a unique take on the werewolf tale.    Blackmore has strong writing skills, moving the story at a steady pace building his characters thoroughly and providing twists that will leave the listener shaking their head in shock.

Sean Runnette does an excellent reading of Blackmore’s Breeds, Book 1.  His ability to step into the book and inject the emotion, danger and fear is amazing.  His pitch is perfect and he has a skill that projects the right amount of cynical and sarcastic tones.   Runnette’s voice is sure, confident and calming.  I could listen to him for hours.

This is truly an excellent book if you enjoy werewolves, horror and action.   It is truly unique!

There were no issues with production, everything was clear and concise.  No background issues.

    "Good but gruesome and vicious..."

Not for the faint of heart...Trying to go outside my comfort zone and listen to new things, I liked this listen but the gore factor is 10 plus, it comes down to war of Breeds and one barely makes it out. This is a series, not quite good enough for me to continue on, the narrator did a good job but there were a lot of characters and it was difficult for me to distinguish between them at times.

    "Surprisingly Good"
What did you like most about Breeds, Book 1?

I only bought this book because I enjoyed the Mountain Man series so much. I am glad I did. Brilliantly written and excellently narrated.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Borland. Even though he isn't really one of the main characters he was believable and 3-dimentional; not at all your typical 2-dimentional "bad guy".

What about Sean Runnette’s performance did you like?

His accents. Runnette did an excellent job of bringing the book and the characters to life.

    Any additional comments?

A note to Keith Blackmore (even though I doubt he'll ever read it): Please stay away from overworked, tired cliches. I sighed when I heard the narrator speak the words "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the world he didn't exist" - although this has been used in too many books, tv shows and movies to mention it reminds me of the awful Swatzenegger movie End of Days. You're writing is so much better than that and such a cheap line betrays your talent and taints your work!

A note to Audible: I really hope Audible have plans to bring more of Blackmore's books to listeners. I am very disappointed that there are only 2 series of books from this writer. The Mountain Man series of books are my favourite downloads from my many years of membership and Breeds book 1 was almost as good.

    "A strong storyline"
Where does Breeds, Book 1 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's good and I can see it appealing to those people who enjoy long explanations of the blood and guts bits.

What did you like best about this story?

I think it is a very good story. Enjoyable, if a little too much gore.

What about Sean Runnette’s performance did you like?

His accent and the characters worked well together. He is an excellent storyteller.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Kind of. There were times when I needed a break from the gore

What could Keith C. Blackmore have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

More development of characters. I actually couldn't even name them now, you just dont get to know them and so as people are killed, you dont get any sense of loss.
