Publisher's Summary

A debt of honor: One brave woman ventures alone into a parallel universe to save her old shipmates exiled there decades earlier by a mysterious device called the Transfer Key. She soon learns the alternate universe harbors not just an alien invasion force but a secret that underpins its very existence.

A mission of peace: A long-awaited Klingon-Federation peace conference convenes, led by Ambassador Sarek of Vulcan and Councillor Gorkon of Qo'noS. But both sides have enemies who would prefer the two great powers remain at war - and who will do anything to make certain hate wins the day.

An errand of justice: Captain Kirk and his crew seek the stolen Transfer Key that opens a door between universes, but their hunt is cut short by Ambassador Sarek's plea for help. The Enterprise crew soon become targets in a deadly crossfire - one whose outcome will decide the fate of two universes.

"Large drop off from 1st book in the series"
What could David Mack have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Write an engaging story vs just move along a plot line. It truly seemed like he was trying to get from point A to point B in this book and that's what he did . It was journey without any great moments along the way.

Which character – as performed by Robert Petkoff – was your favorite?

Dr McCoy was perfect, his narration is all that saved this one for me

Do you think Best Defense needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Great question. When I started this book I had every intention of getting the third to finish the series. By then end of this book I was done and had no interest in wasting a credit to get the third book. I debated the purchase then told myself that I really did not care what happened as I had to work too hard to get to the end of this one. Too bad as I am a big Star Trek fan.

"Great continuation of this Star Trek 50th Anniversary Trilogy"

David Mack does an excellent job of continuing this story of intrigue, loyalty, and deception. His characterizations are both accurate and yet startling as the conflicts continue to rise and raise in tempo and intensity (specifically the Kirk/Sarek and McCoy/daughter relationships). I'm amazed how two different writers (first Cox and now Mack) seamlessly construct a story that unites a theme and an overall vision for the trilogy. I highly anticipate reading the next one and enjoying the conclusion to this fantastic Star Trek trilogy.

    "Great sequel"

Definitely an edge of your seat action packed adventure. Not as many plot twist as the last book but definitely more action and still felt true to the characters.

"It made so little sense at the end..."
What disappointed you about Best Defense?

The plot for the final few hours was ridiculous. I just kept thinking to myself no reasonable person would do that. There were so many holes and nonsensical twists that I was cursing under my breath listening to it.

What was most disappointing about David Mack’s story?

The plot was atrocious and made well know characters seem like mechanical puppets in a story.

Have you listened to any of Robert Petkoff’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I listened to the first in the series; his performance was excellent. If I get the last book, it will be because of him.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Petkoff's narration was excellent.

    Any additional comments?

    I wanted to like it.

    "Not digging it."

*SPOILER* Struggling to finish this, how can a damaged warbird take out the D7 and nearly destroy the Enterprise? All this while bombing New Athens? It makes the Romulans look so superior that they don't need the transfer key. Big stretch to make this a 3 book series. I'm not getting the last one.

"This review was meant for the third book"
Would you listen to Best Defense again? Why?

No, but I would listen to the third book in the series

What was one of the most memorable moments of Best Defense?

Nothing on Best Defense, but on the 3rd book Sarek's link to the others was cool

What aspect of Robert Petkoff’s performance would you have changed?

the way he does women's voices

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    Sarek and Amanda's lin

    Any additional comments?

I accidentally gave my review for Book 3 under Book 2 so this review is for Book 3 even though it's under Book 2. Book 3 is the best of the three.

    "Second book has its moments"

I have downloaded the third book which probably suggests the series is worth finishing. The second book had a good mix of political intrigue and space battle scenes and I felt the narrative in the alternate universe was the weakest element. Overall it would have been better to keep the storyline focused on just one or two main theaters of action and the three subplots where a bit tiresome

    "A story worthy of Trek"

Two books in and this story is worthy of Gene Rodenberry's title. I'd say it could make a film Trilogy of a story. Action, politics and exploration abound. Cannot wait until the conclusion in book 3 next week.
