Publisher's Summary

The eighth book in the bestselling Chronicles of St Mary's series which follows a group of tea-soaked disaster magnets as they hurtle their way around History. If you love Jasper Fforde or Ben Aaronovitch, you won't be able to resist Jodi Taylor.

Because, my dear Max, you dance on the edge of darkness ... and I don't think it would take very much for you to dance my way.

When an old enemy appears out of nowhere with an astonishing proposition for Max - a proposition that could change everything Max is tempted. Very tempted.

With an end to an old conflict finally in sight, it looks as if St Mary's problems are over with. Can they all now live happily ever after?

As everything hangs in the balance, Max and St Mary's find themselves engulfed in tragedies worse than they could ever imagine.

Is this the end?

Critic Reviews

"A carnival ride through laughter and tears with a bit of time travel thrown in for spice...readers will be impatient for later instalments." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Taylor has written a madcap and very funny hodgepodge of a novel whose pacing and humour is reminiscent of a Simon Pegg-Edgar Wright film." ( Booklist)

Emotional roller coaster

Normally I can't stop listening, Jodi's books in this series are real page turners. And the sad moments are balanced by the humour. But I must admit that the tragedy that happens early on in this book left me stunned and reluctant to continue; I needed a break to get over the disturbing image that kept on being replayed. Nevertheless I persisted and as usual, I loved the book. Now I can't wait for the next one.

The very worst of a remarkable series.

Enough already with the Rhonan character . How many times must this plot be recycled? The first story where most everything was entirely predictable. Darn shame. Hope the next one's get better.

story struggles with time travel logic

Enjoyable book but writing quality is lower than in the first few novels. Like many time travel tales there are major holes in the internal consistency of time travel logic provided. Taylor doesn't seem clear herself on how it works in this world.

Okay

After reading reviews of this book I hesitated for a couple of months before buying it. I found it not as bad as expected. The story was fine, and any disasters and deaths were to move the plot line forward. But this book, unlike other books, did lack the usual hilarity and joyousness that other books have had. The irreverent "it will be okay in the end" approach. If this is what the series was usually like, then I probably wouldn't bother. But I'm hoping the next book is back to "normal". Zara Ramm is brilliant as always.
