"Buy it now."
This is one of the best books I have ever read on HOW to live the Christian life. The subjects covered include prayer, Bible reading, scripture memory, fasting, service, giving, worship, and more. The book gives very practical instruction on the why and how of the disciplines, while keeping the focus on growing in Christ.
"Time to Update"
I'd like to hear the updated edition with a younger narrator. I had to read this book for a class. First, the updated edition is quite a bit better as technology and information have changed in the last 20 years. Also Whitney's style is incredibly formal, but the updated edition is slightly less so. Toward the end of my semester though, it became apparent I needed a way to get through this book faster than I was. So I got the audiobook for the old version and listened to the last three hours. The narrator is okay. His pronunciation of "Kenya" is incredibly annoying. And his voice in general is not that pleasant. But overall, it's a good book.
It's message is also good, but definitely overwhelming by the end of it. He acknowledges this in his final chapter. It doesn't feel possible to incorporate all of these disciplines in my life at present. But I know that I am by nature not a disciplined person. I intend to make some small changes and document my progress. It's an interesting challenge and hopefully, I'll better in a year than I am right now.
"Read this book...but more importantly apply it"
Christians, apply the Biblical spiritual disciplines to your life. Great book to help you get started. It was great to learn more fully that almost all of these disciplines are not optional but commanded and expected. We are told to go make disciples, but how can we do that if we ourselves are not disciplined learners.
"It was exactly what I needed to hear!"
It ranks high.
It is practical, simple, easy to follow, and very do-able.
No. It requires practice of what is being said.
I recommend it.
"Every Christian should read this book"
This book has all the fundamentals of a Christian. I'm currently a theological major at a university and we were assigned this book. Although I've been a Christian for many years I still think this book is great for reminding us of the daily 'disciplines'
"A Keeper to be read over and over!"
Whether you are a brand new follower of Christ or I'm a mature believer who wishes to go deeper, Donald Whitney challenges the reader in every spiritual discipline. I loved this book! The vocal performance was done exceptionally well however, I would also like to have heard it read by a more youthful speaker so that it would not appear to be a book just for an older audience. Nevertheless it is still an excellent read!
Really helps you to put in to perspective the amount of time and discipline the Lord deserves in your everyday life. This is more than a book but a tool that can be used throughout life.
it is a good book for listening but the listening is enhanced by having the book in front of you and following along making notes.
"good, liked Mathis book better"
Whitney's book is better than Foster's - it has a better focus and more biblical advise. however, I preferred Mathis "habits of grace" to this book.
"Recommended for anyone who wants to grow"
This has excellent ideas and examples on how to grow spiritually and discipline yourself to know more about God and to grow in your relationship with him. It makes you look at how you spend your time and where you are on your walk with Christ.
My first Audible book. Wow...what a transformation this book has opened up to me through His Spirit.
Will you discipline yourself???
