"Ten days after the attacks on the World Trade Center Towers, I stood at Ground Zero and tried to take in the aftermath of one horrific day. The thoughts of that made me cry out to God, No way! There’s just no way evil can be that deep and that dark! But strangely, while the ashes smoldered around me, and the grief of it overwhelmed me, a profound hope rose in my heart - the local church is the hope of the world. There were many people and organizations helping out after the disaster.
"But a work of a deeper kind was happening behind the scenes in downtown Manhattan. The most important work of all was being done by pastors and church members, volunteers of churches, ordinary Christ followers. They were in the middle of all the misery, addressing the concerns of the soul. It was happening 24 hours a day. That was the untold media story. So many other organizations met the external needs of people, but it was the church that reached out to care for the inner needs of their fellow human beings. The church became the physicians for the souls of people."
That experience underscored, yet again, the convictions that have been forming in Bill Hybels for the past 30 years - that the church has an unique mission to fulfill on planet Earth, and that the future of our society depends on whether or not church leaders understand that and focus the vision of local churches accordingly.
Where Bill’s heart beats the fastest is with leaders in local churches. He believes to the core of his being that local church leaders have the potential to be the most influential force in the world. If they "get it," churches will be the redemption centers for change that Jesus imagined them being. So that’s Bill’s hope--that the spiritual gift of leadership will come alive in churches everywhere and, as a result, the church will become the force in the world against which the gates of hell cannot prevail.

"A Must Read!"
This book is full of wisdom and useful practices. Unlike most books, the last chapters contain powerful practices that should be studied. I recommend this book as a reference tool for all leaders and laypeople.
I feel that all the principals can be applied in all ministries.
I will used them in our ministry.
"Missing chapter 13"
Lots of mistakes but that doesn't mess of the good read! Thank you!! Great voice too!
"This is an amazing book!"
This book is worth every minute of your time! Powerful!! I was very blessed by it!
"Informative and Encouraging"
There were a few mistakes in the audio that they forgot to take out, a few times Tom had to repeat something. Otherwise, the narrative and content were very good. I received so much from this book. I highly recommend it!
"loved it! Such wisdom for my life"
All church Leaders should read this & even those who don't consider themselves leaders in the church.
Really, loved this book!!! It has great content for Christian leaders and I would encourage anyone who is one to read this!
"Some compelling, some not so much"
This book does have a lot of good guidance throughout but there's a lot of vignettes about the author's life and church that make the book seem to drag on.
"Enjoyed the book, the reading was less enjoyable"
Really great book on Christian leadership. I wish the recording of the audiobook had been better. The narrator is very stiff and it comes across strange in many place. There are also several errors with the editing of the audiobook where you hear the same part read twice, the narrator talking to the recording engineer that wasn't deleted, and another place where the narrator badly mispronounced a word. I wouldn't say it takes away from the book, but it is very distracting. I wish Hybells would have read the audiobook himself.
What an amazing book. I loved it. So challenging and encouraging. If you are a pastor this is a must read!
"Church leadership from someone worth listening to"
Passion, insight, conviction and wisdom come together from the experience and knowledge of Bill Hybels to make this book a 'must' for those in church leadership. Laughter and tears flow as we hear the highs and lows of what it means to serve in a local church. Every pastor, minister or priest should read this book
Non fiction so no characters
Good to listen to...a few mistakes and re-recordings are noted but not enough to spoil the listening
If I could I would have...so yes
