Critic Reviews

"Like a journalistic Indiana Jones he has travelled the world in search of his prey, displaying impressive stamina, intellectual chutzpah and physical bravery on the way.... This is the most important non-fiction book of the year so far - organised crime's version of Fast Food Nation." ( Mail on Sunday)
"To be regarded as one of the essential non-fiction works of our time. Exhaustively researched and reported, it's sobering in the extreme, but also riveting, filled with exotic locations, staggering facts, acts of incredible brutality and colourful, if deadly, characters.... Anyone with even the smallest interest in how the world really works should read this book." ( GQ)
"The great merit of Glenny's book is that it does not just chronicle the foul deeds of international crime syndicates. It probes the imbalances and injustices that propel people and nations towards criminal behaviour... This, racy, well-researched and highly entertaining book should be essential reading for law reformers everywhere." ( Irish Times)

In-depth and interesting take on organised crime

Somewhat dated as it was released in 2008 McMafia is a meandering take on organised crime takes the listener right around the world discussing different crime syndicates and their specialities. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I found the narrator pleasant and engaging.

The things that annoyed me about the audiobook were the authors constant political bias, especially against Reagan & Thatcher. You would think they aided and abetted organised crime without any benefits to the global economy of liberalised markets and free trade. The books loves to lay the boot into politicians and law enforcement (politicians created all this mess and law enforcement is underfunded or corrupt) without touching on any of the successes of communities against organised crime. It feels somewhat dated when discussing Columbia and Canada (FARC and the legalisation of marijuana in Canada)

However the positives outweigh the negatives on this detailed and interesting book .

I would purchase as a gift for friends and family, for anyone who is interested in true crime and an in-depth look at crime around the world.
