What is the Michel Thomas Method? The Michel Thomas Method teaches everyday conversational language that will allow you to communicate in a wide variety of situations, empowered by the ability to create your own sentences and use the language instinctively, having absorbed the vocabulary and grammatical structures. These all-audio courses were perfected over 25 years by gifted linguist and teacher Michel Thomas, and provide an accelerated method for language learning that is truly revolutionary.
Lessons 1-8, the Beginner course: This course makes no assumption of knowledge of any language other than English and gives the beginner practical and functional use of the spoken language. It is also appropriate for anyone who has studied Mandarin Chinese before, but has forgotten much of it or does not have confidence in speaking. The Beginner course is designed to take you from complete beginner to intermediate level.
Lessons 9-12, the Intermediate course: This course is for those with an intermediate-level foundation in Mandarin Chinese, or those who have completed lessons 1-8 and want to take their learning to an advanced level and speak Mandarin Chinese proficiently and easily.
How does it work?
Unlike most language courses that focus around topics or grammar forms, the Michel Thomas Method works by breaking a language down into its component parts, enabling you to reconstruct the language yourself - to form your own sentences, to say what you want, when you want. Within the first 10 minutes of the course, you will be generating complete sentences on your own. It is important that you complete the lessons in order. The Method is successful because it builds on the language you learn in each lesson and 'recycles' language taught in earlier lessons, allowing you to build ever-more complicated sentences. Because the Method is based on understanding, not memorisation, there is no set limit to the length of time that you should study each lesson. Once you feel you have a good grasp of the language taught in one lesson, you can move on to the next.

"Having both male and female voices help"
when it was over I could only wait minutes before purchasing the next lesson. I highly recommend this method for all people who have struggled in the past with learning languages. Harold Goodman is well spoken and clear as he guides you through this book.
"Very basic start"
While the material is easy to understand, it is presented and repeated many times over the lesson. This limits the amount of material this lesson can offer, making it feel as though you're not learning much in over an hour of audio.
I hope the next lesson has significantly more content.
"Great for old farts"
I enjoyed this even more than pimsleur which is good. As an older student of Chinese don't waste your money on r stone. This is much better. Thoroughly enjoyed it and will go onto #2. I'm hooked.
"easy and fun!"
my kids and I have had a blast listening to this on our way to school and I've already learned some basic Mandarin
"The best way to learn a language!"
I have tried so many different ways to study languages - - university classroom, total immersion, words and phrases set to music, computer courses--this tops them all. It's easy, and it's effective. Love it!
"very little for the money"
the program seems good but you only get one chapter not a full course for the money.
not worth the money.
"Really amazing way to learn"
I'm in love with this new style of learning!
I thought learning chinese would be hard nut it's NOT or "boo"
"Off to a good start"
The book starts by building an appreciation for the language and it doesn't seem so daunting. I'm making up short sentences at end of first book. Looking forward to starting next.
"Great method for learning a language"
The style and method of this book for teaching a foreign language is fantastic. I really agree with the way they go about it. I have studied foreign languages in some of the world's top universities and this is as good as if not better for learning the basics. It would be better The male teacher spoke with a little more expression and invoice. Other than this however, it is fantastic.
"Best learning tool tried so far."
This was easy to fit into my life, listening on the bus, walking to work, good voice, easy to follow and fun. Very innovative teaching technique.
Will continue with other lessons from him.
"Great place to start if you want to learn Mandarin"
I found following along with the teacher and students really easy.
There was just enough time for me to answer or speak the Madarin prior to the student answering in the audiobook meant I did not always have to hit the pause button.
Not sure if this is for you? Audible have a free sample to try.
BTW a bit obvious but there is no story hence the low rating for story!
