What the Critics Say

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." (AudioFile magazine)

    "I like it"

I listen in the car on the way to work most mornings. I like how it builds upon everything it teaches and gets you speaking conversationally very quickly. If I keep this up for 6 months I'll be ready for a trip to France in no time!

    "Excellent practice, but..."

This is a great way to brush up on French skills. The down side, it should come with a PDF of the reading part. I can't see what I am supposed to practice.

    "Useful, I think"

I have no way of judging the quality of instruction, though it SEEMS fine. One major drawback to these is the lack of a PDF outline.

I'm used to the Great Courses series and a PDF overview is pretty much standard with those. So you have to make your own notes, spelling the words phonetically, because you are not going to correctly guess at French spelling.

This glaring oversight slows learning down because you can't use internet tools such as Google Translate to fill in gaps or learn alternative uses for key phrases. Also, some phrases get utterly overused, lesson after lesson, while others are not repeated after the first exposure or two, so you can sometimes forget a basic but useful word/phrase.

Still, I think these are a reasonably cost-effective language course.

    "Reading practice without a text?
    "

I wonder how one gets the reading material.
Its value need to be discounted if it contains
    nonusable materials.

"What About the Text Book Needed?!"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

I just don't like the fact that there is text book involved and I don't know where it is~!!

What was one of the most memorable moments of French Level 1 Lessons 6-10?

The learning approach is quite good but I am disappointed that there is text book needed and I don't know where it is so I had to stop!! any help??

Have you listened to any of Pimsleur’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I learned from the French 1 - 1-5 series and they seem to be all the same learning approach..and I like it

Could you see French Level 1 Lessons 6-10 being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Not really! It could be however be an educational documentary..

    Any additional comments?

Could someone guide me to where the text book is?? I just stopped listening now to it as it requires a book which I don't have and it wasn't obviously provided when I purchased!!

    "Good course"

This is a really good french course: it does work. I started to learn german with pimslaur first, and experiencing surprising success I also bought the first few of the french course. It goes a bit slower for me than the german, but I studied german at school years ago so I gues that helpes with that.. I go quite slowly with french but I notice that it is getting easier and the words and sentences just stick on me after a while. I think this learning program worths its price and it is really effective. I would surely recommend it to friends in the future (as I already did in the past).

    "Not a bad course"

These are the more advanced Units of Phase 1, it follows on from Unit 5. The course, like the previous units, tends to provide a sentence, and then breaks down all the words in the sentence, and the pronunciations for the words. As I mentioned in the title, not a bad course and I'd recommend it to help supplement French learning. As a side note most of the Pimsleur course seem to follow the same learning approach and if you like one of the other language programs you'll probably like this one.
