Audible is proud to present an exclusive preview of the new book by Britain’s favourite writer of narrative non-fiction, Bill Bryson. Narrated by the man himself, One Summer takes you to the summer when America came of age, took centre stage, and changed the world forever. Here, in chapter 4, Bryson takes a closer look at the birth of flappers, the call for skyscrapers able to accommodate the docking of giant dirigibles, and the double peril of illegal saloons and ‘hot movies’.
In the summer of 1927, America had a booming stock market, a president who worked just four hours a day, a semi-crazed sculptor with a plan to carve four giant heads into a mountain called Rushmore, a devastating flood of the Mississippi, a sensational murder trial, and a youthful aviator named Charles Lindbergh who started the summer wholly unknown, and finished it as the most famous man on earth.
It was the summer of the first talking pictures, the invention of television, the peak of Al Capone's reign of terror, the ill-conceived decision that led to the Great Depression, and the thrillingly improbable return to greatness of a wheezing, over-the-hill baseball player named Babe Ruth.
With an unforgettable cast of personalities, Bill Bryson spins a story of brawling adventure, reckless optimism and delirious energy. What a country; what a summer; and what a writer to bring it all so vividly to life.

"Not for sale in my country? No longer a fan Bill."
Actually wanted to purchase book, but will not read any more Bill Bryson books. My buck is good enough for paper books but not for your audio books?
"Got me hooked..."
While I've enjoyed many of Bill Bryson's books, I did wonder if this would be a bit limited in scope. Indeed, at the start of this chapter (4, it appears), it did rather seem to be a very high-level look at America at a point in time, and didn't seem appealing as a whole work.
However, when it got into the story of Lindberg's flight, and the machinations in the run up to the event, it became much more interesting, and by the end, I''ve decided to get the whole thing with my next membership credit.
"I love Bill Bryson, so easy to enjoy his banter."
Enjoyable and wry banter about our Great Britain. I have listened to this a few times.
Absolutely brilliant book but sorry Bill you're no narrator. Best stick to your day job!
"Inspired me to buy the full version"
I love everything Bill Bryson produces. This was an interesting chapter and as such I will definitely be downloading the full book. I enjoy Bill reading his own books, although I know his narrating isn't to everyone's taste. I would actually be more likely to get a book read by him than a narrator.
"Thanks for the taster!"
I bought the book following a quick listen to this free chapter. I love the book and am now 4 hours from finishing, thanks guys you should do this more to help the listeners with making the right purchases.
