Great introduction to the "new religion"
I purchased this book to learn a little more about Islam. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. It starts by providing a history of "the new religion", seating it firmly in the lineage of Judaism and Christianity. I always knew that Jesus was in the Koran, but there are so many other overlaps between these major faiths (crazy given the current situation). The book then moves onto the expansion of Islam around the world. Famous Muslims throughout the ages are covered, there was even a section on Malcolm X. The disastrous events in history for the Faith are detailed, from the Shia/Sunni split, to colonisation and its continuing legacy to this day. The history of the different sects of the religion (ie Saudi Wahhabism) are mentioned and there is an excellent discussion on what a 'modern islamic country' would look like and the difficulties with Democracy. I'm still a committed atheist, but feel like I understand and respect this faith so much better thanks to this fascinating book.

An interesting if rather biased insight into Islam
I contemplated giving up on this book several times as it was pretty hard going. I’m glad I stuck with it to the end as some of the later chapters are quite good. I struggled with what seemed to me to be a rather biased comparison between Islam & Christianity and Islam & western culture/politics. I did enjoy the chapters which focussed more on the history, culture & religious beliefs (without judgement or comparison to other religions on their legitimacy or righteousness).
