I love this book. I listen to it over and over again. The message is simply perfect and uplifting. I'm going to actually buy the book. This book is life changing.
What a wonderful, enlightening way to spend 2 hours. Listened to this on the flight to give a "scary" presentation. It's is no longer scary and I'm filled with gratitude and peace. Thank you.
If you're looking for a new age book whose premise relies on "energy vortices" and "a conscious universe" this is your book. If you're looking for a book about zen and zen teachings look elsewhere.
This is a good book with a lot of useful info.....until he starts pitching his rehab facility then its a sales pitch from about chap 7 on.
"Great summary of Zen"
A great listen. Puts zen into perspective and teaches you how to react to situations that befall you. Well worth a listen
"Is this book just a plug...?"
The amount of promotion of the author's rehab centre "passages" really made me weary and grated on me. Would have rated the book higher if I didn't feel like his message was less than earnest and tinged by an ulterior motive.
"Not much Zen, too much BS."
This is mostly an ad for the author's rehab clinic and seminars. He includes many anecdotes of the sort that will be familiar to anyone who has ever listened to a faith healer: "Mr. Smith was sad and poor, but started using my methods and is now rich and happy."
He also makes two references to the film "What the Bleep Do We Know" which is infamous in the scientific community for being full of bad science, especially new age beliefs justified through a misunderstanding of quantum mechanics: quantum woo.
One of his anecdotes includes the story of a man who was miraculously healed by acupuncture at the author's clinic. Acupuncture has been experimentally confirmed to be nothing more than a powerful example of the placebo effect (the elaborate procedure produces a more powerful placebo effect than taking a sugar pill).
As for the author'author's central message, "everything that happens to you is the best possible thing that could happen to you, " I wonder how comforting that message would be to a starving peasant girl who is slowly being poisoned to death by the toxic fumes of the sulfur mine she works in.
Best money I've ever spent, has changed my outlook on life and made me a happier more easy going person.
"Still a con-man"
The book adds nothing new to the spiritual genre, he simply repeats what has already been said without a new perspective. I wish I could get my money and time back, but I cannot.
The author speaks about his unethical youth, but the con is that he never changed his ethics. He just changed the con. He preys on people suffering from addiction and has made a great deal of money doing so. Really very sad.
"Changed my way of thinking."
Absolutely love this book and all that it entails. I looked at things so negatively without really knowing it before I listened to this book. It showed me things that I was doing to harm myself and my future without even knowing that I was doing that. Don't rush through this. Make it a slow listen so that you can take notes and meditate on them. I'm happy that I choose to listen to this book. Extremely helpful.
