We are all increasingly bewildered by the simple question of what to eat. Despite advice from experts, governments and dieticians about the dangers of too much fat, sugar and protein and lack of exercise, our nutrition - and the global obesity crisis - is getting worse.
Why can one person eat a certain meal and gain weight and another eat exactly the same food and lose pounds? Genes provide part of the answer, but we have been overlooking one vital aspect of diet that lies within us.
Thanks to recent breakthroughs, scientists have begun to examine the permanent residents in our guts: the thousands of previously unknown but essential microbes whose job it is to digest our food and keep us alive. Drawing on the latest science and his own research team's pioneering work, Professor Tim Spector explores the hidden world of the microbiome and demystifies the common misconceptions about fat, calories, vitamins and nutrients. Only by understanding how our own microbes interact with our bodies can we overcome our confusion about modern diets and nutrition to regain the correct balance of our ancestors.
Mixing cutting-edge discoveries, illuminating science and his own case studies, Spector shows why we should stop listening to the myths of diet fads and instead embrace diversity for a healthy gut and a healthy body.

First time I've done a review on an audible book, loved this book so much that I knew I had to give it 5 stars. Who'd have known the human gut biome could have such far reaching consequences. Definitely a must-read for anyone wanting to improve their health and/or for weight loss.
n/a for me, only have listened to the audio book, but I would say this is definetly the leader though,
The information is well backed up and then presented and the conclusion is easy to come to,
I now understand a lot better the things that I have always thought about with diet and have never had any one or anthing to further my own primitive understanding, Thank you Tim Spector.
In parts of the book it seems to be hard to listen too, but I put that down to the information you are trying to listen too and understand. I thought it was boring in parts, but after hearing the audio book a second time, I realised it was way interesting than the first listen to.
The Gut feeling
So glad I have heard the information, Please dont hestitate to follow the book all the way through.
such a great book. easy read, plenty of humour but most of all really good and reliable data from surveys and researches from around the world. feel so much smarter now
Informative, interesting and funny. This book is well worth the read/listen for those who would like to live a healthy well-rounded life, in terms of dietary intake. For those who struggle with weight issues, this book is certainly worth considering.
Just the right amount of anecdotes and science. Similar conclusions regarding diet as those such as Michael Pollen et al come to. Much more info on gut microbes though. Recommend this book to anyone even slightly interested in health.
"Food for thought."
Another brilliant book by Prof. Tim Spector. If you enjoyed Your Genes Unzipped you will enjoy this even more. A whole new look at our lifestyle and what we are doing to ourselves and future generations.
"Very miss leading"
Unfortunately, I struggled through this book. The "facts" are skewed towards unhealthy food groups. The narrator was very monotuned too.
It's always struck me as slightly ridiculous how in a world where there is a new diet fad every five minutes, so many people, be they nutritionists, dietists, doctors or laymen nutrition enthusiasts will speak with such certainty as to what constitutes a "healthy diet". That's why it really made me happy to come across this book. It lays bare the very narrow foundations of a lot of these trendy diets, whilst at the same time provides a basis for a new mode of thinking about food and health, centred much more on the individual variations between people rather than on a one-size-fits-all solution.
Adding to this of course is the light and witty, informative, and above all, honest style of the author. The listener is treated to loads of interesting anecdotes, many of which lead to some very surprising and lasting insights. I have started to apply some of these in real life and I am happy to say that I am already noticing significant effects. I would recommend anyone to read this book and to do the same.
"Not my fault!"
At first I was reluctant to buy yet ANOTHER diet book but weakened by my life's slimming journey, I pressed the 'buy' button! Tim Spector takes us through a fascinating analysis of 'diets' & I was no longer blaming myself for repetitive failures. Serial dieters should listen to this; I have taken Dr Spector's advice & within days I feel so much better. Strangely though, I'm praising this book and the reading on my scales is only slightly lower. The difference is that I feel lighter; not bloated and uncomfortable; my tummy is flatter and I have been relieved of the guilt that it was all my fault.
Now I feel that it is important to highlight the reader. Until I examined the production, I presumed The Diet Myth was read by the author. However, displaying his incredible versatility, Gildart Jackson reads the book so convincingly he, once again displays another facet of his incredible talent. Thank you gentlemen!
"Very entertaining and entertaining"
Not a fad diet book but will probably change my attitude towards food for the better. Great narration, not too plodding.
Have read a lot of books on Nutrition and I really liked this informative book that I was able to listen to without loosing concentration. I docked 1 star as (being a ceoliac), felt that the information/his opinion on people following gluten free diets a little concerning. There are sooo many undiagnosed Ceolics out there being overlooked by Doctors, but otherwise really good.
finally.. some home truths. well written and easy for a non-scientist to understand. I have children and I have diet issues. very helpful!
At last, a well researched and beautifully written book on food, physiology and most importantly our microbiome.
The focus, as it should be, is on attaining optimal health, which of course one positive side effect will be weight loss or healthy weight gain if you are underweight.
Bravo and thank you Tim Spector
"Illuminating and well researched book"
Certainly food for thought.... and action! The power of our gut clearly and convincingly illustrated.
"Thoroughly absorbing and an eye opener."
Very interesting view into the world of microbes and how they effect our bodies. I will that more notice of what I eat now!
Very good book. Perfect to listen on the go. Would recommend . Very informative . Score five
"A must read"
If you are even slightly interested in how to be and eat healthier this book is a must as a listen to - it's based on fact, research and delivered with a great sense of humour, One of the best guys to healthy approach to food I have listened to all read in years
