Editorial reviews

Editors Select, December 2016 - In addition to my addiction to books, I am also addicted to sugar. Ask any of my fellow editors, and they'd be able to tell you what my favorite candy is (Snickers). I almost never pass on dessert (how else are you supposed to know that your meal is over?), and I consider chocolate a major food group. Clearly, I have a problem. Now, in the thick of the holiday season, I've decided it's time to exercise some control. Enter The Case Against Sugar. Narrated by Mike Chamberlain, who has had an impressive 2016 with over 25 audiobooks to his name, The Case Against Sugar was the wake-up call I needed. Author Gary Taubes (Why We Get Fat) combines science and history in consumable fashion (pun intended), making his important message easy to digest (pun, again, intended). —Katie, Audible Editor

Publisher's Summary

From the best-selling author of Why We Get Fat, a groundbreaking, eye-opening exposé that makes the convincing case that sugar is the tobacco of the new millennium: backed by powerful lobbies, entrenched in our lives, and making us very sick.

Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever; obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10 percent of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup. He explains what research has shown about our addiction to sweets. He clarifies the arguments against sugar, corrects misconceptions about the relationship between sugar and weight loss, and provides the perspective necessary to make informed decisions about sugar as individuals and as a society.

Critic Reviews

"[Taubes] helps us understand how to make better decisions regarding sugar as individuals and as a nation." ( Library Journal)
"The obesity epidemic is an ever-growing threat to the overall health of our nation. In making the case against sugar, Gary Taubes details the often insidious efforts by the sugar industry to hide how harmful it is, just as the tobacco companies once did. This is required reading for not only every parent, but every American." (Katie Couric)
"This deeply researched, well-reasoned exploration of the history and biology of sugar would convince any supreme court of nutrition that it is sugar, not fat, that should be indicted and limited. Doctors, scientists, policymakers, and concerned eaters would do well to heed Gary Taubes's advice." (Mark Hyman, M.D., author of The Blood Sugar Solution)

Essential reading

Gary Taubes presents a compelling case for severely limiting sugar in our families diets. The startling idea that sugar may be toxic made me pause for thought.... What is a safe daily amount of sugar and refined carbs for a person to eat?
Children weigh much less than adults yet our western society gives them "treats" and rewards of chocolate and lollies....! Let alone processed food and sweet drinks. Fascinating audible book.

Dissapointing

I bought this book based on the great reviews. I was hoping to learn more about the harmful effects of sugar on human beings and possibly info on avoiding it and tips on minimising it from diet. I got the impression from other reviews that this book would help me with all that.
The book was a long winded history of where sugar came from and goes into detail on so many historical facts and barely anything useful to help anyone with any new and useful info on how bad sugar really is and how to eliminate or minimize it from our diet. Save your money.

Gary taubes is bloody awesome.

Wanna know about sugar and shit? Listen to this awesome book. Gary goes into every study around and if you don’t collapse in disbelief at the bullshit we’ve been fed from authorities, you will find this book really informative. I can guarantee it will change your life. 5 stars

Pretty meaty

I listened to the whole book. I read a lot of reviews before I buy a book. This one was quite long and scientific. There were definitely snippets that I was like ‘wow’ interesting. I did not realise what a HUGE roll sugar has played in history and ALL of our lives. It’s pretty bad stuff if you overdo it. A lot of this book went over my head, but I’m going to try and be more aware of sugar in my (and my family’s) life.
As to the narrator, he was a bit bland and nasal. I’ve heard better. (Gildart Jackson!)

Invaluable information for those wanting to stay healthy!

Wow, who knew that corporations could do so much damage to the lives of the entire World’s Population. We should of left Sugar on the self 100 years ago but have been effectively sold this poison for pure profit ever since!😞😞😞

A real eye opener.

Sometimes you can get lost in the references and details but they are what makes the case against sugar hit home the hardest. I loved it, although now my wife and friends are sick of me banging on about the evils of sugar...

Long winded

Long, not bad but rather dry. Others like the book salt, sugar and fat are easier to listen too!

logical

Definitely worth reading. Is sugar really giving you anything but a quick fix. Knowing whether one's health improves without sugar in the diet is worth investigating.
