Publisher's Summary

Discover the power, joy and love of living "Hands Free." If technology is the new addiction, then multi-tasking is the new marching order. We check our email while cooking dinner, send a text while bathing the kids, and spend more time looking into electronic screens than into the eyes of our loved ones. With our never-ending to-do lists and jam-packed schedules, it’s no wonder we’re distracted.

But this isn’t the way it has to be. In July 2010, special education teacher and mother Rachel Macy Stafford decided enough was enough. Tired of losing track of what matters most in life, Rachel began practicing simple strategies that enabled her to momentarily let go of largely meaningless distractions and engage in meaningful soul-to-soul connections. She started a blog to chronicle her endeavors and soon saw how both external and internal distractions had been sabotaging her happiness and preventing her from bonding with the people she loves most. Hands Free Mama is the digital society’s answer to finding balance in a media-saturated, perfection-obsessed world. It doesn’t mean giving up all technology forever. It doesn’t mean forgoing our jobs and responsibilities.

What it does mean is seizing the little moments that life offers us to engage in real and meaningful interaction. It means looking our loved ones in the eye and giving them the gift of our undivided attention, leaving the laundry till later to dance with our kids in the rain, and living a present, authentic, and intentional life despite a world full of distractions. So join Rachel and go hands-free. Discover what happens when you choose to open your heart - and your hands - to the possibilities of each God-given moment.

    "Invaluable!"

Makes you take stock of yourself and feel just as inadequate as we are. And you can't help but make a resolution to let the house go to potts while you go play in the rain. Get off the devices and love your kids and play with them. It is so honest it hurts.

    "Beyond annoying"

I like some of the author's blog posts, and her overall message is lovely and wise. This book, however, was syrupy, repetitive, and horribly dull. Big disappointment. And the reader's voice and intonation are very Disney-like. Which is to say, incredibly annoying.

"Narration was too sappy for me"

I love Rachel's blog and writings, but could not get through this book. The narration was so sappy and did not feel authentic.
I also felt like the book surprised me with its religious undertones that are not so heavily present in the blog.

    Story
"This would be a decent blog, not so much a book."
Would you ever listen to anything by Rachel Macy Stafford again?

    Highly unlikely.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator has a squeezed sounding voice. It makes her sound like a kid, not a grown up parent who has self actualized. She pushes her ideas too much, so it sounds like she is being patronizing.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    There themes are very important.

    Any additional comments?

My major problem with this book is how the author goes on and on about how great her life was once she decided to go "hands free" but offers few suggestions that target the problems that actually keep up in our heads or on our devices- real problems like making rent or struggling with problems in our own life. She also uses ONLY HER OWN EXPERIENCE as the example in the book. There are no experiences from other users. The whole book reads like a long boring celebration of the autor's self. zzzzzzzz.....

    Story
"lots of very similar stories saying the same thing"
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who is extremely type A personality who is immersed in activities and work outside the home, and has the slightest inkling that maybe they are missing out on life, but is still in denial and wants waking up.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

More examples from other people's lives, interviews with other Mums who have also come through and beyond the disease of mistaken priorities.

What didn’t you like about Jaimee Draper’s performance?

It was probably perfect to the book to be fair, but it bothered me to hear the extreme enthusiasm and intonation for this length of time.

What character would you cut from Hands Free Mama?

    too much Precious

    Any additional comments?

The message of the book is so, so very important, and Rachel has internalised and personalised it - it would be great to benefit from more sharing of other women's 'ah ha' awakenings to give the message diversity outside of middle class America.

    "Better then the blog"
What did you like best about Hands Free Mama? What did you like least?

It was a lot easier for me to digest the messages in the book, then the blog presentation of the same material.

Would you recommend Hands Free Mama to your friends? Why or why not?

I don't really think I can recommend it to my friends, the god themes made me very uncomfortable.

What about Jaimee Draper’s performance did you like?

The performance was great, the best part of the book by far. Great articulation and very enthusiastic.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

No, not really, religion was mentioned on a constant basis, a definite turn off for me personally.

    Any additional comments?

Despite the fact that I am not a mother yet, and do not have kids as of now, I liked the ideas presented in this book. The message overall was very practical, the examples were well illustrated and there was a lot of encouragement and positivity. Have already pre-ordered the second book!
