Child abuse hard to take.

Loved The Language of Kindness but the dark side of this, her first novel, was a little too much for me. A good story with the conflict of cultures, the ups and downs of the adoption process and some well developed characters was spoiled by the long, drawn out details of horrific abuse by the child's mentally ill birth mother. It felt like a campaign to make the public aware of the extent of the problem facing social workers, families and the children at risk, most of all.
