Fourteen-year-old Tory Brennan is as fascinated by bones and dead bodies as her famous aunt, acclaimed forensic anthropologist, Tempe Brennan. However living on a secluded island off Charleston in South Carolina there is not much opportunity to put her knowledge to the test. Until her and her ragbag group of technophile friends stumble across a shallow grave containing the remains of a girl who has been missing for over thirty years.
The question is, did whoever was responsible for the girl's death have anything to do with the sick puppy they rescued from a secret laboratory on the same island? With the cold-case murder suddenly hot, Tory realises that they are involved in something fatally dangerous. But events take a turn for the bizarre when they escape some would-be attackers by using physical powers more akin to a dog than a human... Could the puppy hold the key not only to the murder, but also the strange changes that are taking place in their bodies?

“If you like Bones, you'll love Virals.” (James Patterson)
“Kathy Reichs gets it dead right with sharp writing and a plot that throws a bunch of very real teens into a deadly adult world ... I loved it and I'm sure fans of Alex Rider will love it too” (Anthony Horowitz)
“Mystery ... fantasy ... science ... and heart-stopping action - this book is DANGEROUS. After I read Tory Brennan's first adventure, I wanted more, more, MORE!" (R.L. Stine, author of Goosebumps)
I expected this to be a great book, based on the fact that I have read all Kathy Reich/Tempe books. But the small twist that Tory Brennan beings Alf was fantastic. I have 3 children who will listen to a story occasionally were not able to put down this one.
thank you Kathy Reich for once again entertaining you'd fans and allowing another generation into your world!!
After not being able to find the next book I wanted in the Temperance Brennan series, I decided to try some of Kathy Reichs other books, with a different narrator - Cristin Milioti.
What started out as a voice I was not sure I liked, turned out to be a compelling story teller. Probably would be suited to a younger audience, but I found myself listening to the book at every spare minute.
With definite parallels to the Temperance Brennan series - the heroine being her great-niece, it was a familiar style of story.
A bit if detective work, a lot of "meddling" by those who shouldn't , some sci-fi (I.e. Reminiscent of the Spider-Man beginnings), and throw in some baddies and a small bit of love interest. The end result is a intriguing story with likable characters and a narrator who brings us all together with a voice full of expression.
I am now ready to download the second in the series. 👍🏻
"Exaggerated cliché writing."
Intelligent writing without relying an exaggerated cliché would help
Anger shot through my veins like the Incredible Hulk, Kathy Reichs wrote—and I gagged turned the uncompleted book off and dumped it in the trash bin.
Narrator did well with the dreadful writing.
I cannot stand cliché writing as bad as this:
Anger shot through my veins like the Incredible Hulka
I regret wasting my money on such dreadful writing.
"And here we meet the Virals"
This book is the first in the series that introduces us to the adventures of Tory Brennan and the Viral's pack.
Although written for the younger audience, if you like a bit of fantasy writing then this has a lot to keep the adult reader entertained as well. Also a great narrator who does the job extremely well. Top marks.
"adventures for teenagers"
Modern and quirky this novel has humour wit and adventure. If any people have a memory of ENID BLYTON and her secret seven and famous five stories you can perhaps compare the modern day Kathy Reichs to her with teen speak and todays culture very much to the core , It is a fantasy that is sharp and fast ENJOYABLY refreshing from vampires
"I loved this."
This was a surprise to me. Not at all what you would expect from Kathy Reichs. But it crosses over with my love of si-fi. Loved it.
Ps,Cristin Milioti does a fantastic job bringing this book to life. Very excited to read the rest of the series
"Edge of your seat stuff!"
I was a bit dubious about Kathy Reiches 'young adult' series, I'm a huge fan of the Temperance Brennan books, and didn't think that 'dumbed down' adventure would be for me. How wrong I was! The story is brilliant full of all the thrills and twists I love, I though the Virus would be a little far fetched, but it fits and works!
"I read this as a Tempe fan ...."
It's aimed at Teens but I wasn't disappointed in it. Same expressive prose and attention to detail. story line more fanciful but I can imagine it would be a real hit with my daughter too.
"Got this for my son who likes crime / detective"
It's the famous 5 all grown up!!
Great for a younger audience, got this for my 10 year old son! But bought the hard copy to try and encourage to read more
"Virals - Good - but not what I was expecting"
This is undoubtedly a good story, although not a gritty or dark as Reich's regular characters. Instead of falling into the comfortable set of characters, Reich seems to opt for an entrance into what feel a little like teen fiction - at least with teens as the main characters. This concept is still better than sparkly vampires, but feels like the same genre
Compelling read, enjoyable characters, interesting plot line. Luckly I like Sci-fi or this might have been a surprise
Well voiced and differentiated voices.
I mostly felt surprised of the Sci-fi element of this novel.
