From New York Times best-selling author Alessandra Torre.... This is not a story of servitude. This is a story of strength. I was happy in my small town. In my life as a single, 32-year-old woman. I had a good job, wonderful friends, my independence. I also hadn't gotten laid in three years. Hadn't been on a date in two. Had stopped counting calories and wearing makeup...a while ago. Then Brett Jacobs waltzed in. Caressed my thigh, dug rough fingers into my hair, lowered his soft mouth to my skin, took sexual control of my mind, and stirred it all around with what he packed in his pants. He flipped my quiet life upside down and crawled into a place in my heart I thought was dead. The issue is his secret. The issue is her. The issue is that I don't even know she exists, and he thinks she's dead. The issue is that shit is about to hit the fan, and I can't hold on to him tight enough. Note to readers: This standalone book contains themes which could be considered dark.

This was a really strange story. Probably the only positive for me was the intensity of Brett's love for Riley. But I do not like the lack of build-up that accompanies an Insta-love story and I tend to find it ridiculous that two people would have sex and fall in love while not trusting each other with secrets that are not exactly self-preserving in nature. Yeah I know this happens in real life, I find it ridiculous all the same. Also Riley recovered from her ordeal so quickly I think it can only happen in fictions. Last but not the least I do not believe in Brett's way of rescuing slave girls (this is not exactly a spoiler considering it is revealed quite early in the book) cause there is a law of supply meeting demand and he was playing right into that.
Overall, it is a ridiculous story.
The narration however is faultless and probably the best thing about this listening experience. Not enough to compensate for my credit though.
i really liked this book. it had some great sex scenes and it wasn't predictable. i liked the development of the characters and also the ending.
"1 OR 5 *? WELL WRITTEN BUT WAY TOO DARK FOR ME"
Firstly, I really didn't know whether to give this emotional story 1 or 5 stars because there's no doubt it was well written but it took a very sinister direction that I really really didn't like. From being a flirty fun romance it morphed into something quite different.
I will try not to give anything away in this review but I was totally caught out by this listen unaware of its true nature.... because it started out in a happy place of instant attraction and a sexy one night stand that turned into more sex, passion, caring and love. But then slowly interspersed between those Chapters crept in secrets, suspicions, doubts and very very dark Chapters of someone's horrific reality. And, as it counted down the months then days til that horrific terrifying reality, it starts to get your pulse pounding because you know just where the love story is going to lead you to..... and it's into Hell. However, as the midnight hours turned into dawn, I couldn't stop this listen because I was gripped to every word waiting for the inevitable turn that would change everything...... and then praying for a miracle.
It's mainly told from Riley's POV and very occasionally from Brett's and both narrators did an excellent job. Some listeners may give this 5 stars and they'd be right to but for me, who loves all types of romance, this took an unexpected raw, dark and distressing turn that I just didn't like. But it was one that I had to get through to reach the much needed HEA ending and to hear just how it was accomplished. I also thought that Riley did the dumbest most unrealistic thing ever, that no sane woman would do, but she did live to regret it.
Worth a credit? One of my credits NO even though I liked the characters and the narration however, as explained, although captivated it wasn't in a good way and I didn't enjoy the turn this listen took. But I appreciate other braver listeners may find this a creditworthy purchase. SPOILER ALERT contains talk of torture, kidnapping, the slave market and more.
Wow, another amazing tale by Alessandra Torre! The plot kept me guessing...it was intriguing and I was captivated from start to finish. This story deals with a very difficult subject matter that many authors paint in more of a unicorn and rainbow kind of light, but I think Torre did not focus on the unlikely fantasy of the situation, rather she brought a much needed serious perspective to this type of tragedy. Kuddos.
"A definite head trip!!!"
A chilling, captivating, & hot as sin tale. I absolutely loved this book. I am a big fan of dark romance and this had it and more! This will twist your emotions all up inside and blow your mind! A definite must read!
This narration for this audible was great.
I really enjoy Alessandra's writing.
It is a dark read and may have triggers for some people.
I can't & don't want to even imagine what a person goes through when they are captured. I am not sure how to review this, as it is not my favorite genre, but wanted to give it a try.
If human trafficking, rape & sexual scenes do not bother you, then this is an excellent book!
It just hurts my heart to much, too close to reality.
I will give it 5 stars as a reader.
"Very interesting book"
First of all this book is not dark. After reading the reviews I was a little hesitant to purchase this book out of fear it would give me nightmares. That wasn't the case. This book gives you a glimpse of the sex trading world but not the whole view. I'd describe it like the movie Taken. Second of all It was an excellent well written book that made me cry at some point towards the end. The characters were well put together and the twists kept me interested. Don't shy away from this book based on the "dark nature" other reviews describe. Like I explained, there's nothing very dark about this book.
"I should have read the reviews!"
No I wouldn't change anything about the book but it was just too much. I really appreciate that someone has finally written a book where the victim fights back and doesn't fall in love with their captor but it just wasn't for me.
I certainly would listen to another book by Alessandra Torre but I would take more notice of the book reviews. Tight was way out of my comfort zone.
All characters were well performed by both narrators.
I'm not sure what the follow up would be.
This book does have its HEA and for those who enjoy the genre it would be a powerful read.
"Not Bad, a Little Drawn Out"
I didn't mind listening to this book, it held my interest while I listened to it. However, towards the end I found myself zoning out and being unimpressed with the conclusion.
Alessandra Torre obviously did a bit of research on the topic of Human Trafficking and her book did illuminate the disturbing underworld relatively well. I found that the story of the main character's relationship with Brett dragged on, yet the conclusion seemed to be anti-climatic. After such an ordeal the main character just manages to bounce back to normal and had no blame or anger towards the male character for his role in it. It just seemed a little too happy-happy rays of sunshine for a book with such dark content and I have to admit, that annoyed me.
I haven't read any of Alessandra Torre's books before.
Piper Goodeve did a good job narrating. Her voice was emotive and her drawl rather lovely to listen to.
Perhaps a less secretive male lead? I found him far too mysterious in an unbelievable way.
I can't believe a rather grounded woman could be so gullible and happy to go along with a man about whom she knows nothing about.
Part of starting a new relationship is the exchange of information, it is part of getting to know a person. I don't know how someone can get attached to another person without knowing a thing about them.
"Hardcore & Real"
Rough topics but beautifully written. I couldn't wait to reach the end. I truly enjoyed this gripping story from beginning to end. Twists and surprised are always a plus, too.
"Unexpectedly but pleasantly surprised!"
Without spoilers, I thought this book was a typical erotica story and was on the verge of returning it. But I kept listening and so glad I did!
