Publisher's Summary

Forced to leave the Clan and her young son, Ayla sets out alone to travel the frigid steppes until she finds the valley of horses. Unable to find people like herself, the Cro-Magnons, she settles there and seeks friendship elsewhere. First she adopts a young filly, then a wounded lion cub. But far to the west, two young Cro-Magnon brothers have begun a journey. One of them is Jondalar, whose destiny is bound inextricably with Ayla's.

Jean Auel's imaginative reconstruction of pre-historic life, rich in detail of language, culture, myth, and ritual, has become a set text in schools and colleges around the world.

    "Perfect book, poor performance"
What made the experience of listening to The Valley of Horses the most enjoyable?

I could shut my eyes and be transported to a different time.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ayla. I have read this book MANY times and it's one of my all time favourites.

Would you be willing to try another one of Rowena Cooper’s performances?

Her voice is too old for this story. Both Jondalar and Ayla are young people Rowena's voice did not suit.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I love this book - always have.

    "Disappointing"

I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Clan of the Cave Bear' and was so looking forward to the second part of the 'Earth's Children' trilogy. It started well, but about half way through seemed to become nothing much more than a series of repetitive and syrupy descriptions of sexual encounters - given at great length. I am very far from being a prude, but I found them rather nauseating and extremely boring. I am not tempted to want to continue with the series.
