Megan Vandemeer meant to tell her parents about her broken engagement, but a month and a half later she finds herself boarding a plane home to her wedding. Having stretched avoidance to its limits, it's time to come clean - a terrifying prospect since her mother is sure to blame her rather than her cheating, emotionally frigid ex. A couple of drinks and two Dramamine later, Megan finds herself spilling her sob story to the tall, dark, and handsome stranger in the seat next to her. With only one week left to save his business, Josh McMillan boards a plane to Kansas City in a last-ditch effort, leaving the details to chance. An unexpected answer is delivered in the form of the beautiful brunette beside him. Though she's completely loopy, her honesty, openness, and humor charm him. So when she passes out before landing, he helps her off the plane - a good deed that leads to a colossal misunderstanding. Her parents assume that he's her fiancé. In a twist of fate, the mix-up might help Josh save his business, so he plays along, figuring that he can help Megan too. All he has to do is stage a public break-up convincing enough to appease her mother. Josh is only supposed to be a substitute groom, but the more time he and Megan spend together, the more their pretend engagement starts to feel real, and the less they want to break it off. Can a relationship that began as a farce turn into happily ever after?

"A sweet, funny read!"
Absolutely loved this book! Megan and Josh are adorable together! All the characters in this book add the perfect amount of everything to the story and what a wild ride it is! Can't wait to read the other books in this series! Knickers and Grams are hilarious!
this book was entertaining. I thought it was a little too unrealistic but it was cute.
"The Substitute: Wedding pact series"
I did chuckle now and then, but the story was too predictable and at times boring.
"Funny and Unexpected Twists"
While you might be able to guess the end, how the author gets the reader there is excellent. This is a funny, light hearted read with a plot and character development. Can't wait to continue the storyline on another character in this trilogy.
This was a very easy listening. The storyline though was a bit unreal but, i liked it anyway.
From the moment they met in the airplane till the lovely ending, it was entertaining and very funny.
Worth the value...
I really like Denise Grover Swank's Rose Gardner series, so I decided to give this one a try. I was pleased I did. All of the characters are unique and well developed. The plot contains some twists and turns. And, the romance is sweet. DGS even writes a good sexy scene. I'm also always appreciative of books that make me laugh. I had lots of chuckles and even a few laugh-out-loud moments. I highly recommend this one if you like light, fun, reading!
"Enjoyable & Fun Story"
steamy, lighthearted, fun
Megan was my favorite character because she was sweet and kind.
I will say it was funny to me to hear the narrator speak the men's voices (first time I've listened to a book with this), but she did a good job in consistency of all because I could tell from the tone which character was speaking each time.
Yes, I wanted to keep listening and was annoyed life was getting in the way!
I have listened to books before, but not many. After recently signing back up with audible.com, I chose a few books to download and, after looking at the list decided I needed something a bit lighthearted. The Substitute sounded like just the ticket from the description and I wasn't disappointed. I found myself looking for opportunities to listen to the story, I wanted to know what was in store for Megan and Josh, the main characters (and now look forward to book 2!). The Substitute is a steamy, fluffy chicklit book that is perfect for a weekend getaway, rainy day curled up in front of the fire, or just about anytime you want to "read" something simply for fun.
"fun light read/listen "
I loved the characters. The story was a bit predictable but I truly enjoyed it.
I've read the Substitute before and loved it. The characters and story line is fantastic. But Shannon bring it's to a whole other level with her voices of the characters. I didn't think Grams could be funnier, but her tell about naked yoga out loud had me laughing so hard I had tears. You will love this book whether it's audio, paper, or ebook.
"Megan, Megan, Megan!"
The intricate story line, the twists and turns, and the depth of the characters. What a great story. It kept me rivted!
Megan, because she was so much like me. She is a people pleaser, she wanted noting more than to please her mother, which you can see even though she pretends to be annoyed by her.
Yes, and it was just as wonderful as this one.
When you start to see the cracks in the facade of the mother and she starts to show that she really does love her daughter, she is simply flawed like everyone else.
The only reason I marked this overall score as a 4, is because there is one thing about this story that does not translate well into an audio book. I'm sure it wouldn't have been at all noticeable in a book you simply read, but in the spoken book, you can see that people are always saying her name. Over and over and over and over.. "Megan!" her mother calls. "Megan!" her friend say." "Megan!" her mother calls impatiently. Megan, Megan, Megan! LOL it became almost comical. Everyone was always calling Megan. She must have started about 2,345 sentences with "Megan!". :)
