Since his brother's death, Benny Bianchi has been nursing his grudge against the woman he thinks led to his brother's downfall. He does this to bury the feelings he has for Francesca Concetti, his brother's girl. But when Frankie takes a bullet while on the run with Benny's cousin's woman, Benny has to face those feelings. The problem is Frankie has decided she's paid her penance. Penance she didn't deserve to pay. She's done with Benny and the Bianchi family. She's starting a new life away from Chicago and her heartbreaking history.
Benny has decided differently. But Frankie has more demons she's battling. Demons Benny wants to help her face. But life has landed so many hard knocks on Frankie, she's terrified of believing in the promise of Benny Bianchi and the good life he's offering. Frankie's new life leads her to the 'Burg, where Benny has ties, and she finds not only has she not succeeded in getting away - she doesn't want to.

Having read this book I returned to it to listen to. This presentation made me smile and laugh. The performance change of voice to female ,particularly the bowling posse added another dimension to sense of the characters. Very enjoyable
I love Kristen Ashley books, but this one... I dunno I feel like the girl's kind of a push over... I get it, hot guys but I feel like a lot of the women in her books forgive because the hot guy is "ready". The women are constantly being put off and I dunno I feel like there should be more anger, they're to forgiving...unless I am just an angry person?
I could hear her slurp every-once in awhile and it was...off putting. Otherwise she did a good job
"Get pronunciations correct!!!"
I cringe every time I hear the Bianchi name mispronounced in this book! Has the narrator not to mention the editor or production crew (I assume crew?) ever considered doing a simple Internet search to find a correct pronunciation if they are unsure? I checked myself & there are several websites all with the correct pronunciation which is Bee ah n kee -like Chianti wine.
An author like Kristen Ashely (who is one of my favorites) should get an experienced narrator for each & every one of her books!
I will be reading this one one own & finish out the series with the last book on audio.
Yes, I love Kristen Ashley but this book felt like she didn't have much to say about the
characters so just filled in with boring details. It did not compare to Kristen's other books.
It just wasn't an interesting story.
"Good performance, good story"
There is something very engaging about Kristen Ashley's work, something I do not entirely understand. Her plot lines are not typical and do not adhere to the standard formula, and that may be the elusive element that I can not so easily explain. It works, though, and that's what counts.
That said, she characterizes extremely well, steadily---oftentimes explosively---drives the romance/relationship, writes emotionally powerful prose and seriously steamy scenes, and leaves you with an experience to remember by the time you hit her trademark, satisfying epilogue.
Amanda Bruton gave a good performance. Her narration drew me in and never jarred me from the story. She portrayed Frankie's attitude and internal thoughts very well.
While this is not my favorite Burg story, I enjoyed it very much and would not have wanted to miss it. Well worth the money.
I love the burg series and hoped when I read about Cal and Violet she would write on Benny and Frankie! :) very happy!
My review: 3.5 stars
We are first introduced to Franky and Benny in the end of At Peace. I loved At Peace so I was very excited when we met Benny and Franky and I couldn't wait to hear their story. I enjoyed the story. I wasn't head over heals in love with it like I was with At Peace but it's good.
Franky and Benny have an honest love and overcome many obstacles, mainly being that Benny'd dead brother used to be with Franky and the entire family held a grudge against her. I did at times feel like this didn't live up to the amazing start in At Peace. I wanted a bit more. More of what I am not quite sure, that umpf I guess. A lot does happen and we get to see one of my favorites, Luke Stark. (Yummy Rock Chick)
The thing about audible books for me is that the narration can really impact the story. Perhaps I would have been in love with this had I not cared for the narration 100%.So the problem with the narration for me was that I could tell when the actress stopped and started again. Sometimes there were weird pauses and then her voice would get loud. She did a god job with Benny, but sometimes Franky's voice would sound kind of manly. Eeks. Cals voice for me was to feminine. (He's a tough guy)
I would also have liked this book to move faster for me, and I feel like that is a reoccuring theme for my feelings on this series.
"Best in show!"
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the entire series, this may have been the best. I was really rooting for this couple. Also loved the visits from characters in previous books. What a treat!
Thank you for producing this series...more please!!
"Is this Kristen Ashley? Maybe it's the narration."
I'm about 6 hours in and getting kind of bored with this one. It started out with good character development but now it's just getting drawn out. We need to get on with the story. That said, the narrator is really flat and brings little to the book. It may move faster and be more upbeat with Kate Russell, Emma Taylor or Susannah Jones. They narrated the Rock Chick and Mystery Man series and some of the other books that seemed to be a more enjoyable listen. It just sounds like both characters are depressed.
"I want MORE!!"
This was awesome! I can understand how some people may not like Frankie because she tends to run before facing whats bugging her. But can you really blame her esp with how her own mother and father were. I don't know if I would have been as forgiving to Benny's family so fast I mean she was giving them the silent treatment for a reason in the hospital but then I can see her deciding thats its not worth the grudge. I was mad at Benny for letting her run like he did, I thought he was so determined to have her. Why did he wait? Drama but glad it didn't last long. For a long distance relationship I think they did a bang up job there really wasn't much drama there and I thought there would have been. I was checking out the Goodreads rating and I am really surprised at the 2 and 3 stars maybe you have to experience this book audio book style to truly appreciate it. Either way I was not disappointed in the least. I think Frankie grew as a character and was open and honest when she could be. And I think Benny brought that out in her and had her back when she needed it. So all in all I gave is 5 star's all the way through. Enjoy Everyone!
"I love second chances."
This is a beautifully written, fully portrayed story of the good, bad and in between of various family life, it's long lasting influences on each individual and the power of love and caring to effect change.
Neither of the leading characters are push over. I love the strength, patience and understanding portrayed by the hero which was a perfect foil for the mixture of strength and uncertainty within the heroine.
The story line flowed smoothly, even with the various suspense factors adding another dimension to the twists and turns as the story unfold.
The portrayal of each character by the narrator was skillfully done.
Her efforts were diminished however by the noticeable and repeated swallowing in certain areas of the story.
The producer did a disservice to the narrator and the author by not editing out these frequent swallowing or recording at a more comfortable pace.
When listening to an audiobook, everything you hear becomes a part of the story, either to distract or to enhance.
I love listening to audiobooks but I do not want to be made blatantly aware that I being read to.
It takes the focus away from where it needs to be.
Yes, this is a rich story with characters of depth. Lots of humour and great dialogue between the main characters. There's some mystery and a great storyline.
Links well with At Peace also from the burg series.
Frankie, narrated so well.
Spunk and humour
"Would be amazing if..."
Love the story, love Kristen Ashley. But I found it really annoying to listen to the book and cringing every time an Italian name/surname was pronounced. Surely, the lady reading the book was told/ taught on how to pronounce certain sounds! Arghh...such a shame as it takes away the pure pleasure of listening to a great story.
Love Frankie's attitude and the whole 'The Burg' series
"awesome! !!!@@@love kristen ashley"
