Publisher's Summary

Kayla Moore has always been comfortable with her feisty, maneating reputation. At least it was fine until she hit her 30s and saw her best friends, Stephanie and Nicola, settle down with Linden and Bram McGregor, leaving Kayla as the odd one out. Tired of being the third wheel with nothing but one-night stands and dead-end dates in San Francisco, Kayla decides to take a vow of celibacy and put men on the back burner. But she finds herself wavering the moment she lays her eyes on Linden and Bram's cousin, hot Scot Lachlan McGregor. With a steely gaze and a successful rugby career back in Edinburgh, Lachlan is the kind of man who makes her want to throw her vow right out the window.

It isn't until the two of them are thrown together one long, unforgettable night that Kayla realizes that there is so much more to this brooding macho man than meets the eye. But even with sparks flying between the two, Lachlan can't stay in America forever. Now Kayla has to decide whether to uproot her whole life and chance it all on someone she barely knows or risk getting burned once again.

    Story
"I don't get all the uproar. Narration was awesome."

Just kidding. Narration could easily kill this book! I feel so bad saying this because I probably would do a horrible job too. despite the massively flawed narration, the story is adorable and sweet and wonderful. After reading several books in a row that just really didn't do it for me at all this was a good one. If you still read. Like actually read and not listen... you might want to save this for reading. I am very forgiving of bad accents...but I agree with every single thing said. Harsh and true. AGAIN, SORRY!!!! I could notta due aneh bettar...

This was a sweet story! I let it carry me away and I loved the characters. OOH. ALSO, Can I get a hallelujah for NO CLIFFHANGER? Thank. You. Refreshing author. I would read more of her stuff. GOOD JOB!

Constructive criticism for the narrators...Female lead's voice was fine. No problems. Scottish accents are hard. I find it easier to listen to a bad American accent by a Scot...than a bad scottish/Russian/icelandic/Spanish/Irish accent by an American.

Male lead's voice 'accent was decent'...but Dude. You removed All emotion from the female voice...it's like she was on a sedative all the time and was swaying and looking at the ceiling.

Shoot. that was a bit mean. Dangit.

Story was strong. Shine through the narration. Worth the read!

    "Decent story, painful narration"

I wanted to like this one but I really struggled. Antony Ferguson did a fine job with the Scottish brogue but his falsetto female voice was annoying. Jillian Macie has a nice voice and her narration of Kayla was fine. Her attempt at a brogue, however, was downright painful. Truly, it was so bad that it was a distraction from the storyline. I'm not even sure what to compare it to. It certainly wasn't Scots but I can't say it was like any accent I've ever heard. Just. Plain. Bad.

If I had it to do over again, I would skip this one. It was too annoying to put up with for 17 hours. I forced myself to listen all the way through and, while the story was okay, I felt like I wasted my time. Once it was over, my lingering feeling about the audiobook was simply annoyance.

    "Couldn't go far"

I will stick with about any book that I purchase. However, this "hot and sexy" book about a 30-year-old living in San Francisco sounded more like a 16-year-old virgin's dream of what having unlimited sex was going to be like when she grew up. I agree with others that the narration doesn't help.

Things continue to devolve. When she refers to a 71-year-old mother as old and failing it was almost too much. I know she is incorporating her mothers grief in her description, but most of the 71-year-old people I know would be pretty offended with the depiction.

Narrated in first person, the young woman is supposed to be a college educated professional in a big city. She comes across as naïve and just trashy. Nothing wrong with liking sex but I don't want to hear the word "dick" 10 times in the first chapter before she even gets to the story.

I capture a romance novel every now and then for some good, simple, straight out sex, but this is just way too simple.

"Narration was difficult to listen to"

I would just agree that the narration of the story was distracting. Each narrator was fine doing their gender specific narration, but when they spoke for the opposite gender in an accent that was not their own, it was downright painful.

Still too long for my taste but there's something about the narrative style that is appealing.

"Couldn't take another moment of Jillian Macie"

I'm sure this was a fantastic story from a great writer. I enjoyed the first audiobook in this series because the narration was good but I couldn't get more than an hour into this one because of the grating voice. There wasn't enough emotion and she sounded angry. I couldn't distinguish one female character from another. I've learned my Lewis about not listening to the sample. I bought this based on the last book I listened to in the series and because I enjoyed the well written characters. This is one I'd have to buy and read instead of listen to.

    Story
    "Sexy yet emotional!"

Karina Halle warned her readers that this was an emotional book, that it was going to tug at our hearts and never let go, and she wasn't kidding. The prologue - gutted. The dog rescuing - fell in love. Seeing the story unfold from both Kayla's and Lachlan's points of view - hooked. It's hot, steamy, and undoubtedly an emotional roller coaster.

"I understand these dogs. I know what it’s like to be cast aside, to feel unwanted, to believe you have no one to fight for you. I’ve been there. Time and time again. It hurts like all hell, but if I don’t fight for them, who will?"

Halle's ability to write poignant lines that pack humor and emotional is what makes me love her writing. I am in awe of her style - impeccable timing; deliberate, meticulous character development; and incredibly steamy sex scenes. I can never consume her words fast enough when I pick up one of her books.

"There was nothing I could do.
    She’s a riptide.
I’m just a man without oars."

    "Beautiful story, horrible voices"

This story is so beautiful and so worth the journey. But the voices are horrible!Antony Ferguson has done the male voices for all the books in this series and his female voice has bugged me (southern accents for women from San Francisco). But Jillian Macie's Scottish accent almost ruined the story for me. It was some strange combination of Russian and maybe Italian. Half way through the story I was too involved in the plot to get too upset, but if I had attempted this as the first in the series I would have quit.

    "A-ma-zing! A beautiful story."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

    Absolutely.

What did you like best about this story?

The character and story development was perfect. The angst and love was realistic.

Have you listened to any of Antony Ferguson and Jillian Macie ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've listened to Antony Ferguson. His performance was the same as the other books. His high-pitched female voice makes me laugh, but it doesn't take away from the story.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Some parts made me cry because I could really feel the characters' pain.

    Any additional comments?

I knew I would listen to the audio over and over before I even completed listening to it the first time.
