The Earl of St. Merryn needs a woman. His intentions are purely practical - he simply wants someone sensible and suitably lovely to pose as his betrothed for a few weeks among polite society. He has his own agenda to pursue, and a false fiancée will keep the husband-hunters at bay while he goes about his business. The simplest solution is to hire a paid companion. Finding the right candidate proves more of a challenge than he expected. But when he encounters Miss Elenora Lodge, the fire in her golden eyes sways him to make a generous offer. Her sorry financial circumstances - and dreams of a life of independence - convince her to accept. But St. Merryn appears to be hiding a secret or two, and things seem oddly amiss in his gloomy London home. Elenora soon discovers that this lark will be a far more dangerous adventure than she'd been led to believe. And the Earl of St. Merryn will find that the meek and mild companion he'd initially envisioned has become a partner in his quest to catch a killer - and an outspoken belle of the ball who stirs a bothersome passion in his practical heart.

"Fun, Witty, A Little Heat"
Excellent narration, distinction of characters. This was just a good historical romance mystery, some laugh out loud wit, and just enough passion to keep it interesting. Loved the characters (eccentric and "good" people) and the mystery.
"Great book, unbelievably great narrator"
YES. I've already listened to it twice, just to hear Amato's voices and range. The plot may not be original, but author Quick does a great job of making it a bit different. The developing romance is well done, and magnetic..
Listening to her is like listening to poetry.
"Nice easy listen with a great narrator."
Nice light read.. Interesting enough to want more, but not heavy that you have to rewind every time you miss a sentence.
Amazing. An intelligent woman, is actually attractive to an English gentleman. Cute story, although a common premise, with a dash of mystery to entice. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story on my commute.
Nice story, plot had twists and turns. Narrator is the best ever .Narrator for Audible. She could read the phone book and it would be great. Very talented with all the character voices.
"I Always Enjoy An Amanda Quick Novel!!!!"
Loved it! Amanda Quick knows how to deliver in every novel. The way she builds every element of the novel is exciting! I love how combines mystery, history, and romance. I just love it! THEN! Add one of my favorite narrators Bianca Amato! I can't lose.
Lovely story we'll read. I enjoyed it. Quick always comes through with everything I want in a romance- happy ending
This book was a great listen. My memorial part was learning that the Earl made the runaway plans I was surprised by this. I enjoyed the readers voice and cadence!! 👏👏👏🌹🌹🌹‼️ just amazing. A must listen.👍👍.
"I listen to in twice"
I need really really like this story. I finished it and started back from the beginning and it was still just as good.
Strong independent woman
When he put her former betrothed in his place in the very public park.
Narrator did a great job.
I loved the mystery and the love story. Well done!!!
"A wonderful introduction to Amanda Quick!"
Warm and witty characters, mystery and romance. The bedroom scenes are not overpowering and tastefully written.
I'll definitely be trying more by this writer.
The narration is amongst the best I've heard, especially in terms of the pacing and despite the odd Americanised pronunciation (odd in a British voice).
