Publisher's Summary
More than 2 million copies sold by Picador, more than 8 million around the world - now a film by Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings, Heavenly Creatures)
My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973. My murderer was a man from our neighborhood. My mother liked his border flowers, and my father talked to him once about fertilizer.
This is Susie Salmon. Watching from heaven, Susie sees her happy suburban family devastated by her death, isolated even from one another as they each try to cope with their terrible loss alone. Over the years, her friends and siblings grow up, fall in love, do all the things she never had the chance to do herself. But life is not quite finished with Susie yet . . . The Lovely Bones is a luminous and astonishing novel about life and death, forgiveness and vengeance, memory and forgetting - but, above all, about finding light in the darkest of places.

Must read if you love true crime and fiction
I absolutely adored this story. The narrator really brought it to life.
Although confronting, the story is one of Life and Death that sets a real peaceful and beautiful tone in the end.
The characters (being her family/friends) moving along life without Suzie from her own perspective is truly awe-inspiring, like we as readers are actually looking through heaven with her, without feeling detached from the living and how their lives progress.
The world we are put in is as realistic as our own, yet you somehow feel as though heaven can be a real place, regardless. That the dead do really listen, and watch us.
I came away from the title with a new perspective on how fleeting our time is, how grateful I am for my loved ones, and just how lucky I am to be living on this Earth with them.
Suzie's last words to us, "I wish you all a long and happy life." had me in tears.
The girl she was and is in this story reminds me of the optimistic and bright child I used to be, and that though bad things happen in this world and tragedy can strike, it can be a profoundly beautiful world too, if you let yourself see it this way.

Heartbreaking but amazing
One of my favourite books. I read it as a teen and loved it, but I don't think I understood it fully. Now as an adult, I truly can feel the devastating heartbreak of the story. I love Susie's character, the tragic end of her life is overwhelmed by her beautiful way of viewing the world. I feel like this book captures the nostalgia of youth and makes me grateful to experience growing up. This book makes me mourn for a character that never existed, but also reflect on the tragedy of what happens to thousands of young women around the world everyday. “I wish you all a long and happy life. ”

Did not live up to the hype
This book had a really intriguing concept that drew me in to begin with - the idea that the narrator is the girl who was murdered watching the events after her death. However, there were sooo many head scratching moments that left a bad taste in my mouth and leaving me really confused about all of the incredible reviews. ESPECIALLY the part towards the end where Susie, a 14 year old girl, gets a very limited amount of time back on earth and, rather than communicating with her family or helping them track down her body or her murderer, uses the time to bone the guy she had her first kiss with?!?!? That part was so cringy and unnecessary, not to mention incredibly problematic. It made me SO uncomfortable. She uses the body of Ruth (essentially raping Ruth because she did not give her consent) to have sex with a man in his 20s who would still see her as being 14 years old?!?!? And it was portrayed as this beautiful moment?
That aside, the whole idea of this young girl watching her families' lives (e.g. her mother and sister being intimate with their partners on several occasions and narrating parts of it) also felt uncomfortable at times. A lot of time was spent going over the mundane events of their day-to-day lives in unnecessary detail.
All in all, I feel like this book had potential that was never reached.

Excellent narration
An outstanding and truly moving novel, Alyssa’s narration was exceptional as she had you easily believe you were listening to the voices of the individual characters! A wonderfully diverse range of talking.

Dark story that has been beautifully told
The Lovely Bones explores the trauma that ricochets in a community after a horrific event. The dark story is beautifully told and is far superior to the movie. The themes of grief, strength, regret, and hope parallels reality.
I, personally, did not love this particular narrator.
