Publisher's Summary

Living on her family’s gorgeous lakeside estate in Cornwall, England, Alice Edevane is a bright, clever, inquisitive, innocent, and precociously talented 14 year old who loves to write stories. But the mysteries she pens are no match for the one her family is about to endure....

One midsummer’s eve, after a beautiful party drawing hundreds of guests to the estate has ended, the Edevanes discover that their youngest son, Theo, has vanished without a trace. What follows is a tragedy that tears the family apart in ways they never imagined, leaving their estate as empty as their broken hearts.

Nearly 60 years later, having enjoyed a long, successful career as an author, Alice is now 80 years old and living in London. Theo’s case has never been solved, though Alice still harbours a suspicion as to the culprit.

Miles away, Sadie Sparrow, a young detective in the London police force, is staying at her grandfather’s house in Cornwall. While out walking one day, she stumbles upon the old estate - now crumbling and covered with vines, clearly abandoned long ago. Her curiosity is sparked, setting off a series of events that will bring her and Alice together and reveal shocking truths about a past long gone... yet more present than ever.

A lush, atmospheric tale of intertwined destinies, this latest novel from a masterful storyteller is spellbinding and satisfying.

"Morton is the master of the atmospheric old-fashioned novel packed with enough stories to fill all the worn satchels in the Milderhurst attic." ( Bookpage)

Slow

What did you like best about The Lake House? What did you like least?

Narrator was painful. With bad accents and a south african/australlian accent coming through. Bad essex accent. All over acted so very annoying. Story was slow and laborious and spun out, not sure why so many good reviews. Lots of cliches. Would not read another one of her books.

Would you be willing to try another book from Kate Morton? Why or why not?

No

What aspect of Caroline Lee’s performance might you have changed?

Poor and annoying. Would not listen to another one.

Could you see The Lake House being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

Yes could be. Would be better with better accent - actors and much faster.

The narration is a mess (namely the accents)

...which was very distracting. Each character spoke in at least 4 accents, and bad ones. I wish the narrator had chosen to skip the attempts at accents, it would've been much nicer to listen to.

Boring

Perhaps a book set in Cornwall should have a narrator that can manage a vaguely English accent. Almost as bad as an American trying the Australian accent.
First 1/2 hour made me feel like I was listening to a parent reading to a child.

Terrible accents spoil an otherwise pleasant book

An enjoyable story, unfortunately the awful accents that the reader has attributed to a lot of the characters is distracting.

Another excellent book from Kate Morton -a good story

Kate's books never let me down. It's taken me a few weeks to read this time but I enjoyed picking it up at any stage. I'm sure I must have heard the full range of Caroline's voices by now but she always draws me in and I enjoy each character. A predictable story you might think, you wont be disappointed.

Do not waste your time listening to this book

The narrator's voice is unpleasant and the inconsistent accents extremely irritating. Did anyone hear this voice before going ahead with the recording?! I believe not. The story is infantile in its plotting and silly parallel stories that resolve in an annoyingly neat way. If only I had downloaded another book or better radio was available on my drive. Just awful

Enthralling story

I loved the characters and all the twists and turns in the story. Just when you think you know what happened you are sent off in a completely different direction. I could not wait for the next trip in the car to see what happens next.

I liked it all. Kate Morton is an extraordinary author and hooks us from page one. I am listening to her every book now. Thank you Kate from a fellow Aussie.

Kept me puzzling right to the end.

This was a different genre from my usual but I did enjoy it.
Nice storytelling and I never guessed the final twist.
