Publisher's Summary

This is the way the world ends. Again.

Three terrible things happen in a single day. Essun, masquerading as an ordinary schoolteacher in a quiet, small town, comes home to find that her husband has brutally murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter.

Mighty Sanze, the empire whose innovations have been civilisation's bedrock for a thousand years, collapses as its greatest city is destroyed by a madman's vengeance. And, worst of all, across the heartland of the world's sole continent, a great red rift has been been torn which spews ash enough to darken the sky for years. Or centuries. But this is the Stillness, a land long familiar with struggle, and where orogenes - those who wield the power of the Earth as a weapon - are feared far more than the long, cold night.

Essun has remembered herself, and she will have her daughter back. She does not care if the world falls apart around her. Essun will break it herself, if she must, to save her daughter.

The first novel in a new series by award-winning author N. K. Jemisin where a mother struggles to find her daughter in a postapocalpytic world.

    "Fantastic world building"

Loved this book, so unique with a stunning storyline. Jemisin is such a great writer, the Hugo Award was well deserved. One of the best books I have listened to. Narration excellent.

"Just finished this book and I am still Confused!"

It took awhile to get into this book, I started listening to it whilst dog walking. But once into the story I would end up continuing to listen when I got home and sometimes at night in bed. However, I Have finished this book and I am still Confused! Seriously, will someone explain the 3 main female characters. I thought it was the same female at different points in her life, but it doesn't quit follow if that's the case and if it's different main characters, then I have no idea what the link was. I think I may have nodded off during some key story points! Lol

    "Struggled."

Struggled to get into this one. For me, the narration by Robin Miles was quite stilted. The muddied accents she put on for some of the characters were very strange. The sci-fi aspects of the story were very compelling though.

    "some great ideas but..."

I felt some areas needed further exposition and the characters were never fully fleshed out... I always felt I was skimming over the surface of the story without being drawn in. what brought it home was the lack of emotion at losing certain characters, didn't bat an eyelid when they kicked the bucket.

"Incredible story and narration from Robin Miles"

It's difficult to convey the forcefulness of N K Jamison's rich world, her characters so human it's almost painful to observe them, and the towering mastery of Jamison's prose. This is fantasy that utterly destroys convention and formula of genre, protagonist and the form of novel writing itself. It's literary fantasy and it's breathtaking.
