He should have left her and never looked back… That's not how things played out for Caine, a nearly one thousand year old Pyte, who should have known better. Instead of walking away years ago, he has been watching over the only human who has touched his heart. He stays to protect her, at least that is what he tells himself. When trouble finds her, he knows that he should just cut his losses and walk away, but there is no fighting the hold the child, who has become a woman, has on him. Now they are both paying the price.
Danni knows that she isn’t technically a Sentinel and is putting her life in danger every time she goes out on patrol. She isn't worried, she has a job to do. It is the only thing that matters to her anymore and she isn’t going to let it go without a fight. Unfortunately for her, she didn’t foresee her ex-boyfriend selling her out to a Master, being captured, getting locked up and stuck in a room with the cranky Pyte. The same Pyte that broke her heart years ago and won't stop glaring at her - as if their little predicament is all her fault.

This was a really nice Surprise. This book had great sex, angst, action and a provided a chance to revisit with characters from previous novels.
"AN ENDURING, SASSY, SWEET, FUNNY, DEVASTATING LOVE"
Wow! I'm really taken aback by this series...I'm loving it, and at the same time on pins and needles due to the dangers. In this series, you get the continuation of previous characters that are further built up (Ephraim & Madison's family, etc.), with the dimension of the addition of new characters, including our hero, Caine and beautiful heroine, Danni.
Caine and Danni's romance is a deep and powerful one. Caine is a 900 year old Pyte who was endeared to a bossy little girl, where they lived in the Sentinel compound. After noticing that the girl was rather neglected by her Sentinel parents, Caine became her protector and friend until the day he abandoned her when she was about 17 years old. However, quite a few years later, Caine and Danni get saddled together through the ploy of despicable villains. Caine's love for Danni is his weakness and the enemy knows it....even before Danni does.
In "Tall, Dark, and Heartless" you get a love between Caine and Danni that is filled with hilarious moments, hot-insatiable sexual need for one another, and so much danger and challenges that you feel the weight of it. Yet all this couple really wants, is to be together. No worries though, they do get an HEA, but you just know that their story will continue to be told in the next books in this series...So, definitely more to come for Caine and Danni!
Well, after my rant about the male lead in the book that preceded this one, I was so happy that Mathewson redeemed Chris Williams and his relationship with his mate, Isabella in this book. Chris made a permanent change in his outlook and we got to witness the sweet, devoted husband and father in him come to life. The lives of other characters, including a risky budding romance, between Jill and Logan, were explored in between the scenes with the leads, almost as commercials.
Overall, I love how Matthewson creates these hilarious characters and their love relationships that allow a lightness in this dark and dangerous world where despite the supernatural qualities of the characters, danger always seems to follow & with a vengeance.
Can't wait to read/listen to the next book (hoping it will be released soon)!!
Narrator: Stella Bloom has really come into her own with this series. She's doing a fabulous job in her narration.
"Love the story, hate the audiobook."
I love the Pyte/Sentinel series and every other series that this author has, so I would definitely recommend the ebook but not this audbibook. The edit is very poor, there is a lot of skipping and repeating that is very distracting.
"Cant wait for more books in this series"
The narrator is the reason that I have purchased every audio book in this series. The story is good but the narrator Stella Bloom makes this book a thousand times better!!! A narrator can totally kill a book and this is an example where the narrator just makes this book AMAZING!!! Great Job
I love this series and cant wait for more books to come out! Hurry Please!
"Tall, Dark and Boring"
I tried three times to get into this story with-out success. I found the story boring and i just couldn't stay connected to it. Perhaps with a better narrator it might of helped but with all the repetitive stuff i doubt it. Sadly a big No from me.
"Loved Every Minute"
Funny sexy hot and just flat out WOW . I love these books and can can't wait till the next one is released. GET IT NOW
"2 long, 2 much sex, failed wit"
I had high hopes for this story based on the reviews, and maybe that’s always a bad thing. Rarely do things live up to expectations. The good things included the paranormal world backstory with pytes, sentinels, vampires and werewolves and the sexiness—of which there was plenty—of the story. Some listeners might consider it more like erotica, and I can see why. But I don’t think the sexiness and sex times rose to that level. Though the author really, really needs to cease the overuse of the word “slit.” Also, Danni, the main female character, and Caine, the main male character, were quite likeable and love between them wasn’t immediate and quick nor based entirely on good sex. However, sex is treated almost like sustenance, like a requirement for life. It was a bit much.
Unfortunately, there were more things that I didn’t’ like. The story is more sex and romance than action, which is not a bad thing, if that’s what you’re looking for. The author told tales from when Danni was a child and Caine a sort of caretaker for her. It was supposed to be cute, and it was a little and at first. But then it was overdone & no longer cute. The author was trying too hard. Similarly, attempts to make Danni appear cute, as an adult, with some of the things she said and did were unsuccessful. Instead they took away from her badass vibe and made her appear vapid. There were many attempts at wit and cutesy-ness, but I only viewed them as irritations. I also didn’t like the 2 times Danny said she almost raped Caine b/c that indicated the lack of understanding the author has regarding what rape is. It was offensive and showed the painful ignorance of the author. And, once love was acknowledged, Caine said “baby” in every sentence. It was tiring. But I don’t know if it would’ve been ok with another narrator. Finally, the story was just too long. If some of the childhood tales and sex scenes were omitted, the story would’ve been shorter and nothing would’ve been lost.
