In the exhilarating Saxon Tales series, Bernard Cornwell reimagines one of the most fascinating tales in all of history - the birth of England - and breathes life into the brilliant king who made it possible: Alfred the Great.
Alfred of Wessex has survived the Danish invasions, but though he now has an uneasy truce with his enemies, fresh Viking ships are arriving to plunder and enslave the Saxons. Those Vikings must be defeated, and Alfred's first move is to deny them their fortress on the Thames, the decayed Roman city of London. His weapon is Uhtred, a warrior of formidable reputation. But neither Alfred's wisdom, not Uhtred's prowess, might be enough to save Wessex when a Viking lord captures a prize of inestimable value.

Exciting as ever Uthred's tales continue as he fights his way through political turmoil with his swords and cunning.
Beautifully read with accents and tone enhancing the experience of the book
Another great book by Bernard Cornwell! I only wish Jonathan Keeble narrated all books in this series.
Job well done
"Powerful and Excellent!"
Always the master of historical fiction, Bernard Cornwell writes another amazing tale of the people behind England's creation, and Jonathan Keeble is the man who brings it all to life.
"Utrid for President"
Another enjoyable tale with riveting combat scenes! The weave of competing loyalties and interesting history make this a great story - the rich voice of the reader makes for compelling entertainment
"Love the narrator - Jonathan Keeble"
The story was great...kept me wanting to know what happened next. But I also think Jonathan Keeble's narration was another reason.
"Back to expectations!"
This book was far better than the last. Excellent narrating, and fat story pace. Cornwell was back at his best.
"Voice of the Gods!"
I love Bernard Cornwell. I am an avid historical fiction fan and he is at the top of the list.
What makes this audiobook and Pale Horseman a five star is Johnathan Keeble. He is magnificent, a superior talent for making Cornwell's words sing with Uhtred's voice.
I have more than 500 titles in my audiobook library and Keeble is at the the top of the narrator list. Perfection!!!!
"Good swaggering narative"
I like that Uhtred and the Danes are very sympathetic. Both Saxons and Danes have good and bad guys. No one is perfect. The grit and grime of living in the Middle Ages really comes to life.
"LOVED this reading!"
Perfectly imagined characters
An exciting story, but Jonathan Keeble's interpretation absolutely makes it. His command of dialect and performance made this one of my favorite audio books by far. (There were a few technical difficulties -- skips, repeats etc. -- which is why I gave the book 4 stars overall.)
"Awesome....real story telling at its best."
Jonathan Keeble is the best narrator by far for this series, and the overall result, coupled with author Cornwall's exceptional talent as a writer is enchanting and addictive....son and I are hooked!
