Life for Dexter J. Daley has never been easy, but he's always found a way to pick himself back up with a smile on his face. Taken from his home and the arms of Sloane Brodie, his boyfriend and THIRDS partner, Dex finds himself in a situation as mysterious and lethal as the Therian interrogating him. Dex learns what he's secretly believed all along: his parents' death wasn't an accident.
Discovering the whole truth about John and Gina Daley's homicide sets off a series of events that will change Dex's and Sloane's lives forever. As buried secrets rise to the surface and new truths are revealed, Dex's and Sloane's love for each other is put to the test, with more than their relationship on the line. If traversing the waters of murder and secret government agencies wasn't enough, something inexplicable has been happening to Dex, and nothing will ever be the same.

"i love this series"
i absolutely love this series but listening to the narration was painful. Mark Westfall was horrid and i will not be purchasing anymore of the audible versions of the book if he narrates.
he was whiney and droned on and on....i kept flinching everytime he got to the end of a sentence which did this draging kind of....it was just awful. i couldnt get past the second chapter and i found myself going back to the other audible books to see if i had the same reaction and i did, but not as bad.
"Fantastic! Best in series!"
Mark Westfield consistently uses tone, props and ingenuity to draw the listener in. He makes the story so much more unique and emotion-filled.
All those threads that have been dangling since the beginning, all those moments that seem to have been unrelated, it's all explained and tied up with a neat little bow AND the series is left open ended enough to (please!).
Along with Westfield's terrific narration this just a really entertaining and enjoyable experience.
"LOVE this series!!!"
I absolutely love this series!! The series just keeps getting better! I'm looking forward for Seb and Hudson's story!!! I like how she keeps Dex and Sloan's story going in between the other characters' stories.
"One of the best in the series"
I have always been a big fan of the series and of Mark Westfield as a narrator, and when I read this book I was afraid that it might be really hard to get all of the emotion into this story. I'm glad to say I was wrong. Mark did an amazing job. I won't go into spoilers for anyone who hasn't read the book, but I will say that when things got real he did an excellent job of making me feel like I was right there in the middle of it.
Can't wait for the next book!!
"Great book... Not so great narrator"
I'm a little sad because initially I really liked the narrator for this series. But he's steadily gotten stranger. He ends every single sentence with the same intonation. And he keeps dragging out the end of words. The way he narrates doesn't always reflect the mood. He started out great at the start of this series so I hope he changes this habit by the next book, because I love this series. I just had a really hard time listening to it.
"Family Baggage from the Past"
The 1st couple books in this series were awesome! I loved the humor, bantering, and strong character development. The more recent books have delved into unresolved family drama. It just seems out of character for these guys to have so many mommy issues. This story line tied itself in knots working in the varies threads from the past. The ultimate "insider" bad guy makes a brief appearance at the end, but don't blink or you'll miss it.
I was really disappointed with the book ending. Melodramatic, over the top grave side drama. Think of Barbra Streisand singing "Daddy can you hear me" from the movie Yentl.
The Ethan Hobbs Character. An explosives expert with special needs makes absolutely no sense.
"Best one of the series!"
This was definitely the best book of the series. Even though the characters of Sloane and Dex are firmly established up to this point through the other books, Charlie manages to take them even deeper yet. The book starts out where the previous one left off with Dex being kidnapped right out of Sloane's arms while they are sleeping. The kidnapper turns out to be a new character to the series called Wolf. He is a Therian, supposedly the best of the best when it comes to agents and spies. Wolf questions and tortures Dex trying to find out information about Dex's mother and a file that she had which is a list of Therian and human couples where the Therian has marked their human lover. Throughout the book everyone is trying to get a hold of this file for various reasons. In the previous book Dex is having trouble with his health and some mysterious seizures. The seizures continue in this book and are apparently "changing" Dex in strange ways. Even though he is feeling terrible throughout much of the book Dex continues to be strong and determined to protect those he loves. The characters of Tony, Sparks, Sloane and Ash are all taken to a deeper level throughout this book. The book does an excellent job of drawing emotions out of the reader, one minute you're ready to cry and the next you're laughing. Throughout this process there are some incredible twists that happened in the book. It was definitely one that was hard to put down because you would get so drawn into the story. We also learned a lot about Dex's parents as he works through his feelings of being abandoned by them. To say much more would be giving away too much of the plot however I will mention that the book does sort of ended up setting the stage for the next book which will be about Sebastian and Hudson. I rated this book a solid five stars for everything including the narration which was excellent. The hard part is now the waiting until the next book in this series comes out!
"Riveting suspenseful romance."
Everything. This is the best story yet.
Dex. I loved how he evolved and Mark showed us so much emotion in this book. I have to Admit I like Wolf and Hudson's British accents too.
What moment didn't! I was scared for Dex at the torture in the beginning. I cried several times. Dex and Sloane's love is touching. I cried when Dex heard his mom's voice on the tapes. I cried hard at one point I can't say why as it would be a spoiler. And the ending gave me happy tears. The entire story is so emotional and awesome.!
OH MY GOSH! Just when you think a series can't get better it surprisingly outshines itself. Smoke and Mirrors is the best in this series yet. The entire book evokes so many emotions from laughter to nail-biting suspense to tears of sorrow and joy.
I love Sloan and Dex and this story gives us so much more into their lives.I just can't say enough about how great this book is. You have to read it to see!
If you like unusual shifters, cat shifters, special ops, nail-biting suspense(lots of suspense) romance, hot man sex and a fabulous ending this is a must read!
"So much excitement!!!"
Well – SO MUCH HAPPENS in this book and I don’t want to spoil anything.
So… things that I loved about this story:
Sloane and Dex becomes SO CLOSE: It’s amazing. Just when you think they couldn’t possibly love one another more. Sigh. Ooey gooey love in abundance. It was wonderful!!
Learning more back story: we learn more about Dex’s parents, Tony’s relationship with them.
Super hot lovin' times.
Lots of purring!!!!
As you know, Charlie has teased us with her “Change is coming” and WOW is it ever. You’ll understand pretty much what that refers to after the first chapter.
Things that break my heart: Seb and Hudson. They seriously need a HEA. They are in so much pain!
Things that made me laugh: Ash’s response to Dex when he was pouting. ☺
Things that made me mad: SPARKS. Full stop.
I know any fans of the series will adore this and I think it might be tied with
Rack and Ruin as my favorite in the series. I can’t tell you more. You must read this series in order. It’s amaze-balls!
Highly Recommended !
There are so many characters, so many emotional scenes, so many “techy” type situations and Mark Westfield handles it all like the pro he is. This really showcases how wonderful he is at narrating this series. He practically defines the series by now in terms of “becoming” the characters, he’s got them down pat. Dex is Mark’s voice in my head. He adds so much with how he modulates his voice for being muffled, on a phone, around a corner… stuff that really brings this vibrant and action paced story to life. Highly Recommended!
6 of 5 stars
"Superb. My favourite story in the series"
The narration, as always, is terrific and professional, with extra technical touches to add realism to the performance. Mark Westfield is THE voice of the THIRDS books. He is Dex and Sloan and Ash and all of the other characters. There is a rich quality to his voice that is easy on the ear. He expresses erotic and emotional scenes exceptionally well. It was as if I was in the room with the characters from start to finish.
This is a lovely lengthy audiobook with plenty of alone time for Dex and Sloan to express their feelings and love for each other. There’s a couple of angsty and heart-stopping (literally) scenes told from Sloan’s POV and they are super. It’s more of a relationship storyline compared to all the others, with emotions running high. We are treated to some smoking hot and growly bedroom scenes.
There’s THIRDS and TIN action going on, of course, but it’s not all fangs and claws and intrigue. There are lighter moments that had me chuckling this time round. Even Ash seems to have matured in this story. (But don’t worry he still takes time to make digs at Dex.)
So, the series has been building to this point and a lot of the puzzles and unanswered questions are confronted in this story. We find out what happened to Dex’s parents and more of his childhood. And Tony has a surprise for us all too. It’s all set for Hudson and Seb to tell us their tale next. Plus I’m excited to find out what’s going to happen next for Sloan and Dex.
This story definitely needs to be read as part of the series as it is not a standalone. Each story is fabulous and I think this is my favourite one now.
What can you say about this series that hasn't already been said? It's a fantastic read, then add in Mark Westfield's narration and it becomes something else, something more. It just gets better and better.
"I did not want it to end :("
One of my favorite M/M shifter series of all time! Charlie has created something i truly love and mark has brought it to life. (Thank you dream-spinner press)
