Publisher's Summary

Whether hunting warlords in Japan, druglords in Colombia, or nuclear terrorists in the United States, John Clark is efficient and deadly. But even he has ghosts in his past, demons that must be exorcised. And nothing is more demonic than the peril he must face as the commander of a covert multi-national anti-terrorism squad known as Rainbow.

Almost as soon as the group is formed, three terrorist attacks occur that seem unrelated at first, but may be the beginning of a new brand of terrorism like nothing the world has ever encountered before. Their success could literally mean the end of life on this Earth as we know it.

Rainbow Six is Tom Clancy's most shocking story ever - and closer to reality than any government would care to admit.

A must read for all military and spy fans

Don't let the long duration deter you. Rainbow Six is an engrossing thriller about a globe-trotting group of elite soldiers to save the world. Do yourself a favour and don't read into too much of the blurb as the story works best when you simply let it unravel as you go.

The action scenes are fantastic, realized in minute detail from spent bullet casings arching through the air to heads exploding in a mist of pink vitae, and bodies collapsing like a bag of potatoes.

The characters are excellent, with the bad guys given plenty of backstory to show that, like reality, doing good or evil is simply a matter of perspective and beliefs.

The novel has served as a solid foundation for the numerous videogames over the years.

Such a satisfying ending

What a great read. I had often started the book but never got the chance to finiah it. Finally got the chance to finish it and absolutely love it. There are pacing issues but I think it made the ending that much better.

Great book worth it

Great story a little slow in parts but built well. Narrator a felt sounded a little like Kermit the Frog which tookba bit of getting used to.

Not for me

only my second audio book (the first, I loved) but I have struggled to get beyond the first few (long) chapters. People who already like Tom Clancy will love this story. I made the mistake of thinking it might be like a John Le Carre novel, for me, the benchmark in the political and espionage thriller styles. I'm being generous with 3 stars as I really disliked it. The narrator should read history, science, classics....anything other than tough-guy action man vernacular of Clancy's men. One thing that bugged me about the writing was the characters constantly appealing to an audience by finishing sentences with a question; "wasn't it?", "isn't it?". You tell me, I thought. It comes up a lot and gets really distracting, doesn't it?

Carrying on the Clancy tradition

A great yarn! apart from some horrible mispronunciations. But that is American English for you. However, I enjoyed it very much and would recommend it to anyone, but then I love the Tom Clancy ethos which, in this case, is admirably upheld.

John Clark. Ding Chavez. I rest my case.

This book is more an off-shoot of the Jack Ryan universe than a direct part of it. But it is still a worthy addition to the Tom Clancy collection of any reader who enjoys incredibly well written storytelling with a military theme. This gem has an international team of soldiers battling terrorists in multiple locations around Europe (pre2001). Another example of Tom Clancy being able to deliver an incredibly impressive action filled adventure that is full of relatable and endearing characters. It's a really good read.
