In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. Their blissful reunion is shattered when she touches a boulder in an ancient stone ruin and is instantly transported to 1743 Scotland, a place torn by war and raiding border clans. Will Claire find her way back to her own time, or is her destiny forever linked with Clan MacKenzie and the gallant James Fraser?

"Davina Porter maintains the distinct voices she creates for each character throughout the lengthy narration. Her delivery of 18th-century language sounds authentic and is easily understandable." (AudioFile)
I found it unbelievable the voice actor sounded much older than the main people's perspective and it just kept me back from sinking in to the book. she had a lovely voice and it was pleasant to listen to. I just couldn't merge the book and the voice. But it did sound like a good story, what I got through. so listen to the sample and if you like her voice give it a try!
I absolutely love the story and I can't wait to get into the next book in the series. I also love the Narration by Davina she is very believable with all the various characters.
I love the time traveling and of course the love story between Claire & Jamie,
This is my first Performance by her but after this series, I will be looking at other stories.
not sure there was anything that would make it better, i just didn't like the interminable sex (yeah i get it, they were hot for each other) unbelievable close scrapes and escapes for Claire, and Jamie the superhero surviving beating after beating. just toooooooo much.
obviously lots of people really like it and the series … why should she change it for me?
Davina was fine, is was the content
most of them…but particularly the escape of Claire from the prison only to land in a pit full of bodies, then get attacked by wolves, which she kills single handed (NO weapon) then gets picked up by some dude who wanted to marry Jamies mother way back when… oh dear, REALLY?!?!?!
obviously I accidentally chose a genre that i really don't like, but i did go on the many many previous reviews….almost 100% positive … so maybe its just me….
Davina Porter is incredible. She truly brings the story and characters to life. The story itself is enjoyable if not exceptionally good, but with Davina Porter performing the reading it is overall exciting and engaging. Each character has a distinct voice and it's incredible how you feel you know these characters as the book wears on.
I found that there was too much sex for my taste but I became hooked anyway and have listened to 2 more books in the series (where the sex dies down a little). So really it's a nice, easy story to engage with and as long as you're not prudish then I'm sure you will warm to it like me.
Absolutely loved this book. I'm a huge fan of The Bronze Horseman series by Paullina Simons, and I've been looking for something as good as. Throughout listening to this book, I drew a lot of parallels out of both books. The characters are well defined and the story is full of detail. The voice actor does a great job and I'm looking forward to listening to the next one.
I don't think that I would have read this book if I'd known what it was about. It portrayed the Scottish and English people as barbaric. The level of violence in some parts made my stomach turn. I read for enjoyment, and to switch off from daily life, not to be shocked.
"Love this series!!!"
Purchased this book during one of Audible's first of the series sales, what a great deal! Don’t be intimidated by the length of this book. It was a little slow to start but once hooked it won’t let you go. If you like historical romances this is for you. I really enjoy how detailed Diana Gabaldon’s writing is, you never wonder “How did they get there?”. Davina Porter is a wonderful narrator! Definitely need to listen to this series in order! I went quickly through books 1 – 4 and then waited for the unabridged version of #5. Now I can’t wait to listen to 5 – 7!
"Love the series!"
Yes, I'd recommend to a friend. I've become absolutely addicted to the series, and can't imagine audiobooks before this set!
The most memorable moment for me was when Claire actually popped back in time. Up until then, I was wondering why all the rave reviews....the story just started off slow, and fairly boring to me. I was listening during housework, and actually had switched to music on several occasions. I just couldn't get hooked. (That's why I only rated the 1st book as a 4 for the story - I had a hard time getting into it.) Then she traveled, and well, I was hooked from then on!
Davina Porter's accents just bring the characters to life for me. Her version of Jamie, the main male character, just makes my heart melt. If I heard a man try to pull his voice off now, I would just be so disappointed. Weird, to say, I know...but I think I LOVE Jamie's character because Davina's voice made me!
Before the time travel, no, I didn't want to listen to the audiobook in one sitting. Afterwards, heck yes, I couldn't get enough. Impossible, with the length of each book in the series, but I do my darndest to try! I find myself listening in the car, in bed, and then even at work. I have a bookkeeping job, and find Davina's voice and the story soothing. Diana tends to go on and on about scenes and situations - and if I miss a little bit of the description when concentrating hard on work, it's not the end of the world. Most of the time though, I find myself rewinding so I won't miss a bit! - the descriptions and situations are just that engrossing.
I highly recommend this series to anyone and everyone! Please, give it a listen up to a wedding scene in this first book of the series, and if you're not hooked by then, I don't know what to tell you.
It was a little slow in the beginning. I would listen for a while and then put it down. Eventually i just pushed through and when it finally grabbed me i was in hook, line, and sinker. To the point i was making sure i had the next in the series ready. I can't say enough good things about this series!
"Good narrator, fun, but predictable story"
I'm not one to read a lot of romance novels, but this one was fun, if somewhat predictable. The narrator did an excellent job of creating a voice for each character, which made it a fun listen.
I know this series has a lot of fans; but it just isn't my cup of tea. I did enjoy listening to this book, but I'm not sure I want to continue with the rest of the series. It seemed that everything worked out too perfectly for Claire. She goes back in time, is captured by outlaws who think nothing of her "unusual" clothing, and they treat her well. She finds the perfect man and makes friends wherever she goes. She is accepted by just about everyone -- and her perfect man saves her from whatever enemies she does have. And then, and at least for this book, she lives happily ever after.
It's just a little to pat for me.
"Great Narrator, but story could not hold me"
Because of the broad appeal of this book, I tried, I really did,to get into it, and initially was charmed. I finally decided I didn't have the patience to finish and googled the rest of the plot. At least I was interested enough to do that.
"entertaining and romance"
Great narration, historical, romance, and time travel. The story is engrossing. I listen on my way to work and time just flies by. Really entertaining.
"A bit long-winded, but I enjoyed it!"
This story-line was as irresistable as a soap opera, and it balanced a careful mix of sex, violence, politics and time travel. If it weren't so long, I'd give it another listen.
"It has potential"
This book was recommended to me. This book was ok, and overall it has potential. The parts that really bothered me were how the women are treated by the men. I suppose in that era that was acceptable. I almost shut the book off several times. I wanted to give it a chance but I am not a fan of rape and overall violence that this book has. If you can over look that then I think you would enjoy the book. To me love stories shouldn’t be where the woman is degraded and I don’t know why there are so many so called love stories that have that in them. Do us women want that in our relationships or in our fantasies? I don’t think so.
I Love both but the audio version lets me enjoy the story while doing other things, like dishes, cooking,or even on a long drive.
Has to be James Fraser. He is funny, strong, has an air of innocence, and a youthful zest for life.
She gives each Character a fuller dose of personality than they had in print.
Oh yes! If only there were that many hours in a day.
So glad that I can listen to these on my Android as I have it linked through bluetooth straight into the interior set of speakers in my hearing aids. I can't do that with my kindle.
I feel misled by this being called a historical fiction. It is a bodice ripper.
