From the author of Captain Corelli's Mandolin; a heart-warming collection of stories inspired by life in an English village. Casting his mind back to the village where he grew up, Louis de Bernières brings us a forgotten England: where a lady might dress in plus fours, a retired general might give up wearing clothes and a spiritualist might live with her sister and the ghost of her husband. Here we find the atmosphere of those times as it was in the countryside, and the people whose lives are worth celebrating.

"Lovely collection of interwoven short stories"
Not yet, but will keep him in mind. He was truly wonderful to listen to and enhanced my enjoyment of the book.
Louis de Bernieres is always a joy to read or in this particular case, listen to as an audiobook. I even love the appropriately wry title.
LdB can just as easily turn his hand to a simple refreshing tale such as this, or to the sweeping fact/fiction sagas of Birds Without Wings and Captain Corelli's Mandolin. His satirical War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts is highly entertaining. He seamlessly moves from having a twinkle to a tear in his eye with his poignant and perceptive narratives, which remain in one's mind long after the book is finished. Pathos and humor are handled with equal skill and delicacy.
Red Dog was not well received in written form (too short), but was made into the most delightful family movie - worth watching.
Set in the fictional English village of Notwithstanding, each chapter is a short story about the oddball characters and noteworthy incidents in the village, moving across different time zones. As a rule, I am not a fan of short stories, but the personalities in this small community intersect enough between the stories to tie them together into a single canvas.
I heartily recommend this light enjoyable book with its deadpan turns of phrase. If the subject matter doesn't appeal, you are bound to find a book of his that you will enjoy.
"If you like Correlli..."
Superbly written and very entertaining from start to finish. The depth and complexity of both the characters and the story are fantastic. I was truly sorry when I had finished.
"Stick to Captain Correli's Mandolin"
Really didn't rate this book. Some of the stories went on far too long, and others stopped just as they got started.
Not sentimental but compassionate. Notwithstanding has been such an enjoyable listen that the book could easily have been twice as long and I would have loved every bit of it.
I absolutely loved this audiobook. Gorgeously evocative, beautifully and engagingly read.
I suspect it will join a couple of others in my library (e.g. Restoration [Tremain, Degas]) that withstand periodic re-listening.
"Funny and surpricing"
I saw this book's review while visiting England several years before. I immediately was interested, and so when I much later found this audiobook, it became a perfect companion for my walks to work. The book is a collection of short stories, but they do come together from time to time. I highly recommend this book for anyone liking the quirky English humour :)
"a great listen"
loved this book, every character and their story were so real, I even shed a few tears!
This wonderful story has just ended. It has brought back memories of a pre war childhood spent in a small Yorkshire village just outside York. A lost England that lives on in my heart. Thank you Louis.
This book has brought home to me all the melancholic joys of the country. Weather it exists or not, who cares, it's joys and sadnesses are something worth living for. Thank you.
"Rumbustious evocation of an england recently passed"
All the eccentric earthy unsentimental colourful exotic people that fill de Bernière's books - but this time it's close to a home vaguely familiar from my childhood. Wonderful.
