Regret, betrayal, kidnapping, loss, madness, abuse, passion, love.
In this modern retelling of Hansel and Gretel, 13-year-old foster children Griselda and Holden escape from their abductor after three years of brutal captivity and try to cross the Shenandoah River on foot. Tragically, one of them makes it to safety, but the other is left behind.
Ten years later, Griselda's boyfriend drags her to a fight club grudge match, and her world is turned upside down when she watches Holden step into the ring.
Though the connection between them is fierce, bitter regret, simmering rage, and a tangle of physical and emotional scars lie between them, just as dangerous as the white water of the Shenandoah.
Never Let You Go is a story of fear and hope, defeat and survival, and two people - once profoundly broken - who discover that love is the only thing that can make them whole again.
Due to profanity, scenes of physical abuse, and very strong sexual content, this book is not intended for listeners under the age of 18. (Note: Children are not sexually abused in this book.)

"H+G -- are your broken or are you whole?"
So many emotions...such a good book! I love Katy Regnery's books and have waited patiently for this book to be release on audio. It was so worth the wait! Holden and Gris take you through their lives from chidlhood to adults. You are transported into their childhood, foster family, abduction, separation and reunion. Becca Ballenger narrates this book. You can't help but picture Holden and hear him exactly as Becca portrays...a little twang, but not too much. He is surprisingly normal for all that he has lived through. Becca gives Gris a thoughtful, yet strong voice, perfect for her. Gris and Holden separate at 13 when Griselda is able to escape their captor. Holden, believes she is dead and is finally free upon the death of his captor. He never gets over Gris. When visiting West Virginia, Gris happens to attend a fight that Holden is participating in. Now the story really gets moving. So many feelings...the reliving of so many bad memories, the love and bond of two people, how they cope with their past, getting to know each other again and knowing they are each other's souls. You will fall in love with this story.
The best is that when Katy Regnery first released this book, a portion of the proceeds went to the Elizabeth Smart foundation. It makes you want to purchase this series of books to help great causes and have amazing reads.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I first started this story, I thought it would be cheesy. But this is a beautiful story, of ups and downs and the trials of trying to accept, trust and love another person. As well as the hope you hold for the future. It truly is a modern fairytale and is more than worth the credit!
"Great story and Performance"
Thoroughly enjoyed the book. Brought me to tears a number of times.
One star reduced for overall because of the not so stella recording. My enjoyment was often marred by the sound of the moving of the microphone and towards the later part, the quality of the recording deteriorated significantly for about 10 mins.
"5*****"I Jump You Jump-Holden and Gris*****"
Wow! I read so many reviews on this one book and got the gist it would be angsty but goodness, I did not expect to be crying my eyes out or laughing and smiling right along with all the H&h's every bittersweet moments.
Praises to KR and RB, they make a great team in making this a wonderful and touching story. I've read other angst filled books before and listened to as well but none has moved me as much as this one. Well done.
"Leaving bread crumbs"
Love love love the story! So sweet and full of tragedy. Katy's story was flawless. Becca Ballenger was great however the recording was somewhat questionable. Every few minutes you can hear the microphone being moved. That made it a little difficult to keep my interest in the story. That being said without that everything about this story was amazing.
"My heart as made a home in this book, it pleads"
Cherish it for my Heart!!!!
Yes oh God yes I loved it. yes I struggled to read it because I was dreading the end of it and saying no. most unforgettable moment was the part where she met the twins and also the time where they had to separate again
"Leaving me breathless"
This was very different and thank god! Well written and just an amazing story. I will miss it like crazy and love it forever!
When Griz sees Holden at the fight and he sees her. There were several actually but this is a true fairytale.
Grizelda and Holden. She did a great job with all but they were most memorable.
Naming of the father on documents
It was a really moving story and I love it. It will go in a distinct small list of very favorites.
"loved it, sweet story"
I loved their story from beginning to end. The author did an amazing job with this modern day fairytale. Off to the next adv
"Kept me up way to late!"
Wow! I didn’t want to stop listening to this book! The feelings evoked from this story were awesome. Desperation, anger, fear, love, hurt, hope and happiness.. all there. I am exhausted… partly from the crazy roller coaster of emotions in this book and partly because it kept me up WAY TOO LATE!!! I felt these characters had good growth throughout the book and I loved them together.
IMYCILYF - awwwww!!! LOVE IT!!!!
At a few points I didn’t know how the story was going to proceed to my longed for happily ever after.. but it did. I have never read this author before. This book just showed up in my Facebook news feed - someone must have shared, and the blurb sounded really good… I am glad it did not disappoint! I will be sure to check out more of her books.
On the audio aspect of this book: Becca Ballenger narrated well, I would listen to her again. However, there was often muffled background noises, thumping, voices and even sirens at one point. Through the majority of the story, her voice was clear and easy to understand, though it did move away from the mic a few times and one chapter was very “tin-can” like, which thankfully only lasted that one chapter.
I truly recommend this book, though like the blurb says - there is child abuse (not sexual), violence and sex. So be warned if any of that is not your cup of tea.
